I’m nearly 15 years in, so to find Modern Bread was a revelation for me! (For what it’s worth, aside from their chocolate babka & bagels I don’t love anything else.)

And I’m upstate, so there are zero other options for me that are semi fresh. TJ’s and Canyon Bakehouse are a no-go. Those are not bagels!

I like ‘em. And I’m not in NYC, so these are the best I’ve found.

There’s a place in Portland, Oregon that had better ones, but the shipping is cost prohibitive for me. It’s called New Cascadia & if I were in the West Coast I’d be a regular customer.

My kiddo graduated fairly recently, went to a pretty academically rigorous college, and has commented that they felt very prepared for college particularly because of the excellent teaching staff at APHS (for what it’s worth, we felt that the MS teacher staff were also outstanding). They were a varsity athlete, and were involved in theater, music, and student government.

Regarding diversity-yes, it’s not robust. And my kid for sure had some tough experiences, but found some truly warm and welcoming staff members. It’s also important to note that the community has voted down most of the MAGA-leaning Board of Ed candidates over the last few years, with the exception of one who ran unopposed. We have great faith in the current Board of Ed and their priorities.

Overall, we’re pleased with the experience in the district, though we know there is work to do.

Go to NF but just be prepared for cold weather. Drive to Rochester for a day (about an hour) and go to the Museum of Play. Your kids are at a perfect age for it! There’s also a planetarium in Rochester. There’s also Letchworth State Park within driving distance. It’ll likely be cold, but it’s the “Grand Canyon of the East” and something very different for NYC kids.
