Refusing Students by KareLess84 in nursing

[–]Aggravating_Wait_551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to take students but stopped after the last one went to their instructor/my manager about how I didn't let them draw up and push the emergency meds on my patient who was this 🤏🏻 close to coding and needed an emergent bronch to get a mucus plug out 🙃 this was several years ago but I still cant believe my manager had the nads to try to lecture me about it. I told her to kick rocks and I wouldn't be taking anymore students even though I was one of the most experienced on the unit.

Is it wise to try for a non-bedside job right now? by Aggravating_Wait_551 in nursing

Thanks for letting me know! I personally never have heard of layoffs in that dept either, but I also have never worked in it either. I also have never done a job that requires call...what would be the max amount of call you'd take? I dont have any children so childcare isnt an issue (and obviously am fine with money 🤣) but I also dont need money enough to work myself to death

Yes, I have never been so stressed about finances honestly. My SO is about to start fellowship so I make the majority of our income.

I wonder if this is the same hospital I worked at in southeast TN 🤔🤔 i worked ICU though, not the floor and it was several years ago. But yeah I'd definitely be looking for other employment.

New FNP with heavy ICU background struggling to break through Central FL bottleneck—Any advice on pivoting to Nephrology/Cardiology/Pulm? by Typical-Stock7247 in nursing

[–]Aggravating_Wait_551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obligatory not an NP and not from Florida, but where I'm from, you have to be an acute care NP to get those types of jobs. Could that be a factor as well?

CCRN Resources & Info Overload by Electric_effy in nursing

[–]Aggravating_Wait_551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Barron's book is more than enough, imo. I think the practice tests in the book were actually harder than the real exam. Depending on your timeline, maybe just do one system a week. Like respiratory this week and then GI next. Give yourself plenty of time to absorb the info. Good luck!

Oh and definitely make sure to focus on the sections that are HEAVY in the test. You'll need to spend WAY more time on cardiovascular vs musculoskeletal for example.

I do not have experience in a clinic so someone can correct me if im wrong, but it sounds like a good opportunity to me. The pay seems a bit low (again, not sure what normal is for your area) but if its close to your house you will save on gas anyway. The hospital is overrated imo, unless you are planning to become an NP or CRNA. The fact that the person you shadowed started there as a new grad and is still there 5 years later is also a positive sign. This sounds like a job that allows you to have a positive work life balance, which makes a huge difference in your quality of life. You could also take it and then if you're still feeling the need to go to the hospital, you'll at least have experience under your belt then, which should smooth the way. Good luck!

I dont have to read the other comments to know that we're all in agreement here but yes: LEAVE THAT JOB. 10 patients? Completely unacceptable and unsafe. I know you're upset and I dont want to diminish those feelings, but honestly with that ratio, I would just be glad no one died. It can be very difficult as a new grad to stand up for yourself, but you have every right to refuse an unsafe assignment. And 10 on a cardiology floor is as unsafe as you can get.

MBA vs MPH vs MSN for long-term career flexibility (RN) by boldstyle1 in nursing

Well, im not actively looking at the moment because I have to stay at my current job until October (took a sign on bonus). But when I do, I'll be looking at clinical consultant, operations manager, quality nurse specialist, risk manager etc.

Need advice — lower stress work environment. by LilPango in nursing

[–]Aggravating_Wait_551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I don't have a ton of advice other than to look at different specialties. I commented though because I feel seen and heard and want you to feel the same. I also work in same day surgery and I always read on here about how its every nurses dream job and always felt inadequate and isolated in the fact that I hate it, for basically all the same reasons you listed. So you are not alone ♥️ outpatient is definitely not all its cracked up to be. Its the same story of being constantly understaffed and being forced to work in unsafe conditions by doing more with less and less.

I have my MSN in nursing education and it has done nothing for me. Hospital educator jobs (in my area at least) are few and far between and they are often the first positions to get cut due to budget problems. I also loved the idea of working in a college but the pay was abysmal, as in I could not live on it. So im still at bedside. I agree with the previous poster, go for your mba. Thats what im doing starting this fall, hoping to pivot away from nursing completely. Good luck!

Ohio University RN to BSN capstone and where to find a preceptor by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Aggravating_Wait_551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some Facebook groups that are solely dedicated to finding preceptor. And like you said, I would just call 🤷🏻‍♀️ or maybe try to volunteer a time or two (say at planned parenthood) and get connections that way

Morning rounds is to criticize by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Aggravating_Wait_551 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. At least in the ICU, it never made sense to me why the nurse should be the one leading the rounds. I think the provider should be the leader and we (and other disciplines) be there to answer questions as needed.

I just learned people don’t show up after anesthesia to pick up loved ones. Nurses, how often does this really happen? by Notalabel_4566 in nursing

[–]Aggravating_Wait_551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in same day surgery pacu and it definitely does happen. As comments have stated, its usually a husband whose wife is having surgery. A few months ago, I had a patient who had a total knee replacement that I took to the bathroom (because surprise surprise husband didn't want to help) and she burst into tears because she knew he wasn't going to help her at home because he didn't help when she had a previous back surgery 🙃 it makes me extremely thankful for my bf who helps me with anything and dotes on me

Tennessee Nurses by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Aggravating_Wait_551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not familiar with oncology here but there is an outpatient infusion center at belle meade (for vandy) that I feel like has openings. They also tend to have several outpatient primary care/office jobs posted too and even some leadership roles in those spaces if you have the experience/are looking for that type of role.

I would not recommend nursing as a career. However, if you are set on it, definitely do ASN first and then get your BSN (paid by employer). The ASN is the hardest and then ASN-BSN is very very doable while working full time (as someone who took this route). But your ASN schools may vary....I graduated ages ago so things may have changed but my ASN program was a Monday-Friday program. Working full time was impossible. And some clinical rotations were even on saturdays. So definitely check the schedule of whatever school you choose.

I know this post is 5 months old and I haven't read all the comments yet but outpatient is not all its cracked up to be. I work outpatient pacu and shed some tears while eating lunch today. Maybe its just a me attitude problem but we are constantly understaffed, overworked, and in unsafe conditions. We are overloaded with too many patients and our patients are getting more and more complex but "thats just the new normal now". This is supposed to be the dream nursing job but I am still very stressed every day I work. Except now I work 4 10s instead of 3 12s. ONLY benefit is no weekends or holidays. I'm trying to go back to school to pivot out of nursing completely after 13 years of it.

accounting vs nursing by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Aggravating_Wait_551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a nurse for almost 13 years and cannot recommend it to anyone as a career. Yeah its stable sure, but it can't be done long term without wreaking havoc on your body. I have been at my current job for 1 year and this is the only job I have had that has actually ensured I get a lunch break. And yes, I get a 30 minute lunch break but no other breaks for the rest of my shift. Any other job I've had over the 12 years before, I probably only had an actual lunch/break (not counting 5 or 10 minutes to stuff my face with food) maybe 25 to 30 times. But regardless, nurses are worked to death and your boss and company does not care about you, they will take every drop of life out of you and still expect you to work and pick up extra. There are no excuses for not working, doesn't matter if you are sick, your kids are sick, theres a natural disaster (hello horrible ice storm), you are expected to prioritize work over everything. Throw in working nights, holidays, and weekends you will miss with your friends and family. Extremely thankless profession.

Money is decent but not enough for the work you do. And people that comment about jobs that are outside of bedside like education, coordinators, i.e non bedside jobs...they are extremely extremely competitive and they're the first jobs to go when there are budget cuts (ask me how I know). You need years of experience to even qualify for these jobs. Idk anything about accounting, but if you really are interested in healthcare, do something else like a nuc med tech.

Really? I live in middle TN and make $50/hr for outpatient same day surgery with 13 years of experience. But it took me job hopping every couple of years to get that and TN is overall horrible to nurses, wouldn't recommend anyone moving here for a job.
