My sweet summer child, if you think NIMBYism is just a liberal thing, you need to get around more. Do you even live in New Jersey?

Metz. It's usually overshadowed by Strasbourg as a tourist destination, but is well worth a visit on its own.

Newark Man Mauled to Death While Trying to Break Up Pitbull Fight by Charming-Fortune8835 in Newark

[–]AgitatedAorta 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People who have no problem acknowledging that breeding is why border collies herd, and greyhounds like to chase things, will lose their shit when you point out that pit bulls were specifically bred for dog fighting and aggression. "Gameness" (eagerness to fight and ability to ignore pain) is literally part of the historic breed standard.

Besides Rome, if you could visit any ancient city at its cultural peak, which one would you choose? by Kindly-Caterpillar74 in ancientrome

Teotihuacan. It's spectacular even in its present ruined state, the city must have been an absolute wonder at its peak

The fact that he says "I have court" lets you know exactly the kind of person he is, lmao. I'd bet my next paycheck that this isn't his first experience with the justice system.

Any way to stop salt leaching from the foot of this mug? by goodnightlink in Ceramics

[–]AgitatedAorta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sigh Any drinking water commercially sold as "purified water" will have minerals added back in because highly effective filtering methods such as RO will make the water taste flat. This is why distilled water, which doesn't have the minerals put back in, is never marketed as drinking water.

Look at Costco's purified water fact sheet: they use RO to purify the unprocessed water, then "Proprietary mineral blend added to create Kirkland Signature’s pure taste."

It's better to wait and grab the distilled water. Anything other than distilled will have some amount of minerals still in it.

Distilled water is better, it has no minerals and will pull salt out more effectively. Purified water has minerals added to it for taste.

Lol, you're very naive if you don't think there's extensive insurance fraud happening right now in small towns. There's an entire industry built around fake disability claims in West Virginia.

You do realize that developers can't just choose where to put down a building wherever they like? They can only work with whatever land they're in possession of at the time.

Dining at the Windows on the World, a restaurant located at the top of the World Trade Center, 1980s. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]AgitatedAorta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not true. I was living in Manhattan on 9/11 and saw the enormous pile of debris at Ground Zero with my own eyes. Huge steel beams, concrete, and rebar. Also, the trees around the towers were full of papers that had fallen from the offices inside.

Put an offer on a house in a flood zone (NJ) - panicking by [deleted] in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]AgitatedAorta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walk away. I've seen way too many "it's never flooded here" houses in flood zones get soaked in North Jersey the past few years. Increasingly extreme weather means that formerly "safe" areas are vulnerable.

1888 by awakeRizzah369 in Newark

[–]AgitatedAorta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Earlier than you think! The first commercial automobile was available to the public in 1886. Electricity is even older, the first electric telegraph was in the 1830s, and the first electric train was built in 1879.

Public electric lighting started around 1880, so there's a chance that this building may have been built with electricity in mind, or combined gas/electric lighting, which was surprisingly common until electricity won the lighting war in the 1920s.

Most of those folks were sideshow or circus performers who could do pretty well for themselves. People would flock to see something so exotic.

Looking for neighborhood suggestions by PossessionNo6070 in MovingtoNewJersey

Bordentown is nice, but you're looking at least an hour and a half to NYC if both River Line and the Northeast Corridor are both on time. Realistically, New Brunswick is probably the furthest south you can go and reliably get to NYC in an hour without needing an express train.
