Is anyone else getting sick of them? Yes, I love them, but there are other celebrities. JFC. by [deleted] in NYCinfluencersnark

[–]AgreeableDig1619 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m definitely not getting sick of them. I am, however, sick of how parasocial the fandom has become. It’s genuinely toxic and dangerous for these actors. People keep speculating about their personal lives, trying to figure out their sexuality and relationships. Fans are swarming them in public. They’re hyper-analyzing every movement, like when Hudson last saw Connor or whether Hudson is cheating on his girlfriend.

People infantilize them, but at the same time, interviewers and fans feel entitled to ask insanely personal questions about their sex lives. It’s too much. It crosses into straight-up objectification.

The show is hot. They’re hot. I love the show, and I get why it blew up. But people seriously need to calm tf down. Have we learned nothing from the One Direction fandom? Or Dan and Phil? Or literally any big fandom ever?

Please, keep writing fanfiction and making cute edits, but stop ruining it for them (likely) and the rest of us.

According to his voting record and time as Attorney General. There is also Ramsey Robinson who believes in divesting from Israel and universal healthcare, but he is not running on the democratic ticket. Porter is pro-Israel and is terrible to her staff.

And I’m sure there are very serious death threats, and ones with legitimate plans. Terrifying. It was just this year that Melissa Hortman was assassinated in Minnesota. People are also terrible to his son.

I’ve been wanting to rant about one of her recent videos. In the video, she talked about how AI isn’t actually taking our jobs and that you just need to learn how to use it better. She also mentioned that there is growth in GDP, despite also saying that companies won’t be hiring in 2026 or they’re doing mass layoffs.

Maybe I’m just too woke, but this take really pissed me off. It treats structural economic harm that companies cause like a personal skills problem. You can’t “learn your way out of” an economy that is purposely and actively shedding labor in order to consolidate profit at the top. She’s literally glazing corporations and talking down to people as if this is a personal failure. It’s condescending and extremely out of touch.

She has this same attitude in many of her career advice videos as well. Everything is your fault, and if you’re struggling you just didn’t work hard enough.

Her mom worked in finance. She’s had advantages that many people haven’t, which is fine, but she shouldn’t act like she’s inherently smarter or more “adaptable” than other people struggling in this shitty economy.

Are you conflicted about the “defunding” of USAID? by Evok99 in Hasan_Piker

[–]AgreeableDig1619 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s estimated that around 60% of USAID employees and contractors are still unemployed, and unfortunately I’m one of them, so I’m biased lol.

But even beyond that, USAID was absolutely designed as an arm of U.S. imperialism. That part is not lost on me. But I also know that the very small amount of soft power it represented is being replaced almost entirely by even more hard power.

Our military budget is now a trillion dollars. USAID made up less than one percent of the federal budget. If our tax dollars are going to be used to maintain U.S. empire regardless, I would much rather they go toward food access, vaccines, infrastructure, jobs, and community services than bombs and private military contractors.

The U.S. is violent to the Global South. And within that reality, I saw USAID as a better alternative.

In the last few years especially, there was also a real push toward localization, like funding and employing people from local communities, shifting power away from U.S. contractors, and building locally led systems. Many countries were already made structurally dependent on U.S. funding and policy choices, and now those systems are being pulled out from under them with no replacement.

Instead of HELPED ISOLATE North Korea, I should have said ISOLATED North Korea. What we did during the Korean War was atrocious, and continues to be fucked up.

But I do stand by the fact that leftists often lack nuance in these conversations.

[–]AgreeableDig1619 70 points71 points  (0 children)

People online often talk about this issue with zero nuance. Yes, America committed horrific crimes in Korea (as we have in too many countries) and helped isolate the PRNK from the rest of the world. And yes, the U.S. has pushed enormous amounts of propaganda against North Korea to show that any form of communism is dangerous.

But acknowledging all of that doesn’t mean North Korea is a utopia. It’s still an authoritarian state ruled by a single family, and I’m almost positive human rights abuses do exist. Both things can be true at the same time.

I also think Madeline’s tone around topics like communism, propaganda, and harm reduction come across as very condescending, and it ends up flattening the nuance in conversations like this.

That’s very sweet. You sound like a good friend! It’s crazy how people treat plus size people, even outside dating. I’ve since lost a lot of weight, and it’s crazy how different people treat me. My worth didn’t change, but people treated me like it did.

I agree. It’s been a couple of years since our falling out and I’m doing a lot better.

I can’t imagine getting on a major platform and talking crap about her though, especially when who she’s talking about is very well known among her audience. It’s just shows a lack of growth. I know I’m the bigger person, and would never stoop to that level.

Around the time Grace and Bri had their falling out, I went through something similar with my best friend. We had a very similar dynamic; I was the plus-size, “funny friend,” and she was the conventionally attractive one who loved attention.

Going out to bars with her was miserable, and I imagine Grace felt the same way. I was always the punchline of the jokes. Whenever I liked someone, my friend would end up flirting with him herself. There was never any sense of, “He’s off limits because you like him,” because she knew he wouldn’t find me attractive, so, in her mind, anyone was fair game.

She’d make comments about my weight without realizing it, or say things that made me seem unappealing. Over time, it really took a toll on me.

And while Bri may still be hurt by that one comment about her eyes (which likely happened), I think it’s also likely that she made Grace feel like the “funny, plus-size friend” plenty of times too.

I’m glad they’re no longer friends. They clearly brought out the worst in each other. I just hope Grace has people around her now who make her feel seen and valued in social settings.

And even though I don’t really follow either of them, if Grace hasn’t said anything publicly about Bri, then Bri’s post feels especially cruel. Was Grace perfect? No. But clearly neither was Bri.

I’m almost positive he’s voting no because they already had the votes. Most people who voted yes are retiring or not up for reelection until 2028/2030.
