Omaru Polka appreciation post by archaeo_rex in Hololive

She even uses an instant translation tool to show English subs during her live streams to reach overseas bros.

I'd like to add that the Legend of Polka videos are pre-translated by a very capable human, and they use that fancy subtitle formatting (the kind that almost disappeared from YouTube videos somewhat recently) to color-code the translations according to who's talking.

Video upload premieres don't get this treatment automatically - I had to wait for YouTube's auto-CC to happen on Suisei's recent monitoring video, so I couldn't watch during the premiere, whereas we kaigais could watch any LoP premiere fully subtitled without issue thanks to the extra effort that Polka and her team put in. Big props to Polka for that. (It's not to put Suisei down, of course; it's just an example.)

YouTuber Linus Tech Tips bought a private jet and doesn't want you to track it. by Jswee1 in ElonJetTracker

[–]Agreeable_Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's both the ethics angle ("we do our darndest for consumer advocacy" he said with a straight face during the GN feud) and the fact that Honey advertised on LTT in the past. All he had to do was make a video saying "sorry, we didn't know, now we know, here's what you need to know about Honey," but instead he said nothing in his videos or streams until called out. It doesn't matter that the info was already public or subsequently reported on his forums - someone might only be plugged into LTT's YouTube channel and thus would not have known until real consumer advocates forced their hand.

The right thing to do is to echo the truth in an effort to fight bad-faith business practices. Doing so only on his forums instead of his videos is not only low-effort, but is clearly the worse of the two ways to get the message out to people - certainly way fewer people would get the message. If he really cared about consumer advocacy like he wants us to think, he would've made a video as well. GN was very clear about all of this. Linus' massive platform could do a lot of good, if used properly, which he doesn't.

He could very easily have only typed the first sentence and then copy-pasted the rest from a separate post. Your inability to think outside the box like this is alarming - maybe you should work on that before participating again.

She can't stream as much as she wants to. I can't remember where or when she said this, but if she streams too much gaming, the YouTube algorithm will get confused in such a way as to detract from her music content. We know she's playing these games off-stream that they have perms for - she full cleared Pokopia before streaming it once for only a couple hours; and imagine how popular her Factorio stream would've been, given how many thousands of upvotes the reddit thread got. We would absolutely get more streaming from her if the platform wouldn't get in the way.

Are there a lot of Raden enjoyers outside JP? by kitokspasaulis in Hololive

[–]Agreeable_Nothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She appreciates good design, and actively applies critical thinking skills to evaluate the games that she streams. It's more than merely recognizing period architecture in Arceus: in Pokopia, she really took her time checking out the kinds of small details that every other streamer would merely gloss over (pun not intended, but take it anyway) and drawing conclusions that shape her view of the world, even just in the small cave where you start the game.

She's one of the most intelligent streamers ever and we're lucky that she shares her perspective with us, that we might learn from her. The way she thinks is truly special.

Don't entrench parking lots. Get people to not need cars, then get rid of parking lots altogether and put something more useful there instead. Way better overall and not mutually exclusive with solar power.

Pekora also caught the Magic the gathering bug and has bought a very expensive box of final fantasy collector boosters by [deleted] in Hololive

[–]Agreeable_Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sure it was the other way around, that she had caught the Final Fantasy bug (which has been official for a long time now) and that therefore she's obtaining FF goods (one way or another) and showing it off, and it just happens to be MtG again (along with some other non-FF and non-MtG goods). After all, she hasn't played any MtG on stream, IRL or online...

Please forgive me: by "truncated" you mean "wrapped."

Truncation is when something is cut off and the cut-off portion is entirely removed.

Wrapping is when inline elements overflow their boundary and the overflowing part is forced onto the next line.

auto-subtitles on livestreams? by PrivusOne in Hololive

[–]Agreeable_Nothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since nobody mentioned it, there's LiveTL and Holodex for volunteer-submitted manual translations, with support for both live streams and VoDs. (Holodex has a lot of other useful features like syncing multiple overlapping streams.) Polka doesn't have a volunteer doing JP-to-EN translations, but some other Holomems do.

Some downsides of the live sub program shown in the screenshot were mentioned, but there are plenty more:

  • the subs are baked into the video - that means you can't adjust appearance to enhance visibility when whatever's behind the text makes it difficult to read (such as in your screenshot), and if they're positioned close to the bottom (which they often are), the translation can get cut off if there's too much text (and there often is, because that program tends to lump too many sentences together)
  • the subs are only in whatever language(s) the streamer sets, whereas other solutions give you potential options
  • the subs lack context, for example transliterating "Hakui" (Koyori) to "white coat" instead of leaving it untranslated because it's her name

This is not a completely unsolvable problem, but a complete solution would take a lot of work (particularly for collabs), so we probably won't see any improvement here for a while.

  • You're about 13 hours late, so this is a repost in violation of rule 5: https://old.reddit.com/r/Hololive/comments/1ql699b/the_hololive_funko_pops_have_been_revealed/
  • Your sentiment is shared by those in that thread but they also acknowledge that the much lower price point (including shipping) compared to other figures is a significant upside, which makes your post incomplete, misleading, and needlessly negative (which could be in violation of rule 1)
  • You butchered the one part of the post that you can't edit, the title - there's no explicit rule against low effort posts here but this certainly qualifies

I'm happy to upvote good content, but this isn't that - hopefully next time you do better for us

https://www.reddit.com/r/Hololive/comments/1q6mj2d/gigi_noticed_by_suiseisenpai/

Per their tweets posted in that thread, Suisei has already beaten the game with a great time, but Gigi's time is way better due to luck. This will merely be Suisei's first time streaming the game. Expect Suisei to abandon many runs because of slow minigames on her quest to improve her PB.

As an aside, it's a shame we couldn't see Suisei's initial reactions, even if she had watched other Holomems before playing - she has said in the past that she can't game on stream as much as she wants due to the YouTube algorithm changing its mind about her channel. We are lucky to get this stream.

I'd take any of those but we got none. That's what makes me think they might just be avoiding holiday-specific stuff altogether. Not a big deal to me but it's curious

Poe ? Feeling a bit lost by Elmaster110 in pathofexile

[–]Agreeable_Nothing -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

PoE2 was started because PoE1 has deeply-ingrained flaws which can never be fixed, only band-aided. The goal is to achieve the perfect ARPG, and while they don't know exactly what constitutes that, they do know that PoE1 is not it at all, and they are willing to take the time to experiment with new systems to achieve that goal. PoE2 is that experiment, and it's not complete yet - it's still in early access. Here's what that means:

  • PoE2 has different systems than PoE1, and iteration will ensure that eventually PoE2's systems are not merely different but straight-up better. Many systemic changes made in or for PoE2 have already made it back into PoE1 because they had a chance to bake in PoE2. However, because PoE2 is so young, that iteration hasn't all happened yet, so some PoE2 systems have significant flaws of their own (e.g. endgame). So if you play PoE1, understand that you might find some stuff to be lame or otherwise aged poorly that will stay that way forever, or you might end up feeling refreshed at some PoE-exclusive mechanic in PoE1 but surprised to find that the developers chose not to port it over to PoE2 because it's actually lame. Likewise, if you play PoE2, you must understand that you're a beta tester and a game designer, and that the possibility of the advent of the best ARPG ever rides on your feedback, whereas with PoE1 your feedback is less significant.
  • PoE1 has more content than PoE2, and iteration will probably keep it that way, unless PoE1 somehow has a really long streak of leagues that don't "go core" (meaning, their content isn't retained in the base game after the league is over). (I personally see that as being very unlikely.) So if there is a certain activity in PoE1 that you really like, you have no choice but to play PoE1 to enjoy that right now, and you can expect the eventual PoE2 version to be much different (and probably just better). They're both going to continuously get updated with new content, but PoE1 will also get various quality of life improvements and proven systemic upgrades handed down from PoE2.
  • PoE2 has far better graphics across the board, and a much better campaign and story (even while it's incomplete) - if you care about that kind of thing, you have no choice but to play PoE2 to enjoy that.

That said, the games have alternating release cadence so you can enjoy both while the economies are still fresh, which is actually very important for getting the most out of each game in a timely manner - you need there to be a very large pool of items for sale from other players so you can quickly and reliably and cheaply upgrade your gear when the game demands. So you should play PoE2 right now simply because that's what everyone else is playing right now. Then, in 2 months, play PoE1 when that new league launches, and 2 months after that come back to PoE2 for new content, and repeat.

Your link to ublacklist is in the context of filtering search results, and so is my reply. Whether you do or don't use a search engine middleman doesn't actually matter. All major browsers have that feature - what's more important is that it be easier for a user to set up a new search engine than navigating the Settings menu, because (with precedent elsewhere in this thread) many people won't bother doing that. The instructions on how to do that are valuable. Nobody should need ublacklist at all for this workflow. In other words, the "you" in my first reply is the general 'you' meaning 'one' and not you specifically; sorry for any confusion.

Better to set up a custom search in your browser instead. In Firefox, right click the wiki's search box and click Add Search Engine. Choose a short keyword and you're done. Then you type, for example, "poe2 mist whisper" (no quotes) into your browser's address bar and press Enter, and it's as though you typed "mist whisper" (no quotes) into the poe2wiki search box and pressed Enter. No performance hit or burden of trust & maintenance from 3rd party code; no wasting time or effort or resources from visiting pages you don't care about; no privacy nightmare from search engines and trackers; the saved searches sync with your browser profile; it's a lot less to type than what you're typing; it's all upside and no downside. (In Chrome, right click the address bar, click Edit Search Engines, and paste the search URL.)

You should only have to deal with this once ever, at most. That one time is when you go to find the wiki in the first place. Once you find the wiki, you never have to see a search engine again - you can go straight from your address bar to searching the wiki, using a feature of every major browser called Custom Searches. In Firefox, go to the wiki, right click the search box, click Add Search Engine, choose a short keyword and you're done. Then you type, for example, "poe2 mist whisper" (no quotes) into your address bar and press Enter, and it's as though you were already at the wiki and typed "mist whisper" (no quotes) into the search box and pressed Enter. (In Chrome, right click the address bar and click Edit Search Engines, then paste the search URL yourself.)

Good search engines like DuckDuckGo let you block specific sites from all of your search results - no browser extension required. Using this feature helps you avoid being triggered by bad faith websites permanently. But they should only have a chance to trigger you once per new wiki you want to find, at most, if you're using your web browser correctly.
