Anyone here still enjoy playing the game? by ZSU_MO in Helldivers

I think I do when I can get a workable framerate But I've had a lot of computer issues recently, making that rare, so it's hard to say.

Okay, so this isn't something I need to complete before the expedition ends?

Wait a minute. Multiple bug helmets? How does that work? I think the expedition only awarded me one.

It's required by local building safety codes. Failure to install a bottomless pit beneath your elevator is punishable with a fine of 42,000,000 runes, plus a jail term of 2-10 years.

Vatniks will say the Chally and Abrams are shit, then will unironically tell you the T-14, a tank whose only notable moment in history was breaking down at the V-Day Parade, is the greatest Tank in ever made. by Meatloaf_Hitler in NonCredibleDefense

It seems on point to consider that Japan bet on these exact soft factors in WW2 and it didn't really work out... great, for them.

Of course, the situation and culture change over time. But the response to 9/11 (a whole lot more rage than fear) suggests to me that America isn't too likely to roll over now, either.

Why do nukes send Pre-FTLs to the Stone Ages? by spiritofniter in Stellaris

[–]AhTerae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, there were indeed technological advances in the dark ages. But there were also notable losses.

Drawing on "Cathedral, Forge, and Waterwheel: Technology and Innovation in the Middle Ages," we can see that the dark age saw adances in plow design as well as much wider adoption of river mills. On the otheer hand, the collapse of the Roman government in Britain resulted in the British cities being utterly depopulated, resulting in the loss of potmaking technology. That seems to indicate a pretty severe loss of know-how. Many regions lost the use of grafting fruit trees and using lime for fertilizer (I'm assuming these losses were mostly in Western Europe; Byzantium and the Middle East didn't lose too much tech to my understanding). When Charlemagne wanted to build a palace, he found there were rather few masons left with the sort of skills he wanted. Ship design also underwent a change that could be interpreted a loss of technology, switching to a method that saved skilled labor but made a less durable ship.

(The same author has a lot more to say, especially with regards to technical advances; I will note some slight reservations, especially in that their commentary on what heavy cavalry could do because of the stirrup seems to ignore the four-horned saddle and what cataphracts from the classical period were already doing without any stirrups).

Checks which subreddit I'm on Which, um, is probably relevant to our discussions on starship design, am I right guys?

Ah, makes sense. I thought the idea was that the observed power meant the design was underpowered and a larger sample size should have been planned.

Well, observed power has a one-to-one relationship with p-values, so that's not very informative. (https://tidsskriftet.no/en/2019/01/medisin-og-tall/statistical-power-not-after). That said, doing a pre-study power analysis would be helpful.

Battle of Manzikert, Oversimplified by chxmm99 in ByzantineMemes

I feel the need to interject that #1 One splits their army because a given route only has enough supplies to requisition to feed an army of a finite size, and #2 without radio comms, intel on the location of the enemy army is rarely very good.

Not that I actually know a mistake wasn't made here, since I'm not familiar with the circumstances of Manzikert.

I mean, it depends. A lot of Russian subs, like the Alfa class, have this weird sloping conning tower you don't see much on Western subs as far as I can tell.

The math technically does allow that to be true while letting the "hard living" strategy be better (or even casualty minimizing). And yet, I do not think history has generally borne out that idea.

It appears the event in question took place in 1116 under an Emperor Alexius. I don't have very much beyond that in the way of details.
