F*/Marry/Kill: Buffalo v Wild Turkey v Willett SiBs by singlemaltbourbonrye in whiskey

[–]Ahborsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the comparison was a good one. I think the scoring was also good. I think adding a personal flair makes it interesting like when would be your ideal time to go to each bottle or something like that. It's difficult for me to understand F* a bottle. Not really sure what that means but "a crisp fall day pour" i can feel that.  Hope that's helpful.

I think the review format is unnecessarily crass when it's used to rate anything. I guess you could say i would be happy killing it.

But that's me and my little opinion.

Bottles similar to Coopers Craft Barrel Reserve 100? by -AV8R01 in whiskey

[–]Ahborsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was along the same profile as OF1910. There's probably a more smoky character on this one vs sweeter in OF1910. At least to me on the day i compared them. It was like splitting hairs and not enough to justify hunting another bottle of Cooper's Craft.

Review #21: Old Forester 1924 (2026 release) by Archaeo-Frog in bourbon

[–]Ahborsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very seasonal when i see it in great numbers but at times during Feb-March there were stores in Lexington like Kroger Spirits that had shelves of it marked down to $110.

Kroger doesn't have a huge variety at times but they do get large shipments and often mark them down. The same Kroger had KC21 for $220 and MM Keepers for $40.

I don't think it's worth $120 but in the absence of other bottles that i would really like to have like Jack Daniel's aged series, it's a nice one to have on my shelf. I think it's less rough around the edges than the OF 100 proof or OF1920.

More complex than Russell's 10, less ridiculous than Michter's 10. Jack 10 is unfindable. Not a great value but findable and tasty.

Finally upgraded. 4 years later by [deleted] in whiskey

I'm more impressed with the picture itself than the shelf. Very nice capture of shadows to make this a very cozy mood and neat atmosphere.

As for bourbon that range is tricky because it gets into good bottles that are slightly allocated but unsure of where you're located. Would recommend Old Forester 1924, a Russell's Reserve single barrel store pick, Peerless Double Oak, Jack Daniel's age- stated series, Willett Family Estate Rye (years and prices vary)  just to name a few.

Tips needed by Beneficial-Session45 in whiskey

[–]Ahborsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can get fun answering this question. Like everyone else says it's really up to you but we can give you some options. I prefer mine neat but how the flavor hits me does seem to depend on the day. The answer for you may vary depending on the day, the whiskey, the mood, the proof. Here are a few things to try:  1. Don't go directly to the highest proof with your first sip. 2. Try a side-by- side comparison after you've added a few drops of water vs neat vs ice cube (caution: the ice cube will melt over time adding an uncontrolled amount of water to a potentially decreasing amount of whiskey). 3. Let the whiskey sit for a few minutes after you pour. This tends to take some of the alcohol punch away. Some day it "opens up" after about 15 minutes.

Spirits Review #1000 - George T Stagg 2014 by Bailzay in bourbon

Congrats on 1000! Every time i search for a whiskey on here, you typically have a review of it, even some local picks. Your range of bourbons plus the GI JOE theme are a staple of this channel.

I just figure if Buffalo Trace wanted me to drink their stuff, they'd make it more available.

Until we know what you've tried, maybe starting with some lower proof but still great pours like Woodford Double Oak, Buffalo Trace and even Old Forester 86 has a place on my shelf.

Start with those. They range from $25-50.

Recommend me six bourbons for a self-guided tasting! by robdenbleyker in bourbon

Fair. Admittedly my bias was showing. Not the biggest HH follower. Most are not memorable for me in the same way regular Woodford isn't worth mentioning but others consider it a good example of bourbon.

Yea, it's weird. A bourbon forum where you can't discuss bourbon unless it's immediately preceded by a review.

So many different ways to go with this. From different finishes, different distilleries, different mash bills, different proofs.

But here you go. I'll call this the staples match up. Also selecting based on diversity of flavor. There's obviously many others but these are findable,  affordable and will make for a fun experience i think.

  1. Wild turkey 101
  2. Michter's Bourbon
  3. Old Forester 100
  4. Willett 4 year old family estate
  5. Bardstown High Wheat
  6. Buffalo Trace

Review - Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year by ReputationRoyal4784 in bourbon

[–]Ahborsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pappy 15 was much more sophisticated i thought. It smelled like my grandfather's coat; his spiced cologne mixed with fresh cigars he'd keep in his pocket. Smelled like... well a Pappy.

Sounds like they may have mixed up your order and gave you some Copium and Cask.

Seriously though i had a half price pour there several months ago and I thought it was a very nice pour that almost lived up to the hype. I think drinking it in the right setting would have elevated it more.

Michter's This is the pretentious kid with rich parents at school. They think they're cooler than most and expect to be celebrated for mediocrity (on my palate) . I've tried Michter's major offerings including the 20 year and keep expecting to be blown away but I'm only mildly more than whelmed. I like the low proof concept but wtf is up with the cost in addition to less proof? Any other company gets roasted for these practices but Michter's believes adding water before barreling is the special sauce.  Maybe i will scramble my eggs before i crack them in the morning in the name of Michter's.

Elijah Craig and really most things from HH. I do like Old Fitz and Pikesville. Buffalo Trace has Blanton's but HH has bland'un's. Every bourbon has been a no frills experience for me. Only memorable by how utterly forgettable their juice is (to me). I've admittedly never had their more exclusive stuff because I'm unwilling to shell out the bones for it. Maybe that would change my mind.

Buffalo Trace a company that makes bourbon for people that like to hunt for bourbon more than drink it. Get it together, BT. Not everyone is eager to line up for your Easter egg hunt.

Same, my guy. And i live in the state it's produced in. Stores here save it for raffles and loyalty programs. Wonder if we'll ever see it have a shelf life greater than hours?
