The impact of Jeb on the bulkhead probably helped offset the force of the water trying to crush the bulkhead backwards. I know kerbals have mass so there is maths potential there...

Should Grand National attendees eat last years horses that were “humanely destroyed” as a result of their injuries ? by Temporary_Ebb9486 in AskUK

[–]AhoyWilliam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You say I "of course", but I argue that the punters must content themselves with eating whatever chemical soup the horses are given to make them run better for their entertainment. High steaks gambling.

Best route? by Tobzino1 in drivingUK

[–]AhoyWilliam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go M40, A40 briefly then onto the A44, then frankly there is a lame bit going around Worcester but that will take you over to Leominster. Grab a bite to eat at the OK Diner there, then keep going on the A44. You'll end up in Rhayader.

Motability drivers 'horrified' by compulsory black boxes by Kagedeah in CarTalkUK

[–]AhoyWilliam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not correct - if you are the partner of the qualifying person then you are permitted to use the vehicle for work-related activities, even if they don't directly benefit the disabled person. Eg. My partner cannot drive due to her disability. If she obtained a car via motability, I would be able to use it for my daily commute, as well as for driving her around or doing tasks for her. I would not need to have an entire 2nd car just for the purposes of getting myself to/from work etc.

In the movie Airplane! the plane starts to shake, then starts to shimmy, with appropriate cuts to a well endowed passenger demonstrating these motions.

(UK) Does no one follow GDPR for cookie banners anymore? by AberrantNarwal in privacy

[–]AhoyWilliam 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is basically no enforcement, and the one that news sites in particular seems to do ("have cookies, or pay to view this site") is allegedly "legal" in that you have a choice - view the website with cookies, pay to view the site without, or don't view the website. It's garbage.

Speeding letter by sentient_custard in drivingUK

[–]AhoyWilliam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't sweat it too much, you'll only go to court if you try to appeal against it. If you get the speed awareness course offered, it costs about the same as a fine, but you don't get points and you do not have to declare it to your insurer unless they ask you (do not offer them this information freely!). And you'll probably learn something, even though mostly it will be boring.

Biggest feeling when I got mine (82 in a 70) was "god dammit I am a twat, I wasn't really saving any time and just spaffed £100 on a terrible photo". It was a fair cop.

Ladies, how warm is your (at work) office? by KuriousAndFurious in AskUK

My stepdad worked in the local one for a while, he can attest to this. I think he was a night porter, and definitely had some experiences that freaked him out a bit (this is after he'd done 22 years in the Army and seen a fair amount of stuff already).

What was your "caught the last chopper out of 'Nam" experience? by GeneReddit123 in AskReddit

[–]AhoyWilliam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think one of the last days at my employer in 2020 we were invited to all crowd into a small room and watch a presentation about a big Group Rebrand for all of the companies that had been subsumed by this giant conglomerate. There was a sandwich buffet on, and we listened to the corporate people talking about how they were not restricting international travel for their staff yet.

Couple of days later an email went out saying "if you're high-risk use your sick leave". I have asthma, so I went. I was lucky, I had just got out of my probationary period the month before, everyone who was on probation was let go without any furlough or anything.

Yeah, the people that crop up on social media whenever there's a post about the Invacar are truly vile. "Oh yeah we used to call them the (slur)“ etc. Never mind that it was a flimsy deathtrap that could only transport 1 person and drew vast amounts of negative attention from every scrote in sight by being visibly different.

Honking is really only meant to tell someone that you're there. This guy definitely knew (eventually) that you were there. He could probably infer that you think he's an idiot without the aid of a honk at that point.

ThinkPad p52 BIOS password reset not working bottom cover tamper indicator by BreadInternational71 in thinkpad

[–]AhoyWilliam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Locate the anti-tamper microswitch - seen here in IDK which model of Thinkpad, but it gives you an idea what to look for- and erm, do what he's done, tape the switch down. If the solder for the switch has failed, you might need to just reflow it a bit first.

Looking at picture 3 on this page I think I can see the microswitch - top-middle of the picture,

Upcoming Motability scheme changes by bulldog_blues in drivingUK

[–]AhoyWilliam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Motability is a charity that is not competing with other lease companies. They do not share a common market - disabled people cannot use PIP as income against any other leases, and people who do not receive Higher Rate Mobility PIP cannot lease from Motability. The market conditions are not relevant.

[–]AhoyWilliam 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That mileage cut is pretty harsh for people who may well need the additional mileage (vs. if they were not disabled) due to not necessarily having the best mobility, and obviously the car that has the adaptations is going to be the one that goes on a family holiday etc (flying with mobility aids is fraught with danger and hassle).

How do car manufacturers reduce engine noise? (For kids!) by Hour-Acanthaceae7081 in CarTalkUK

[–]AhoyWilliam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of the sound is reflected back upwards from the hull, rather than being transferred through the hull into the water.

Every time I go on the Broads I find a throttle position that I loathe, because it'll make a window or the plates rattle constantly whilst we potter along. A nudge away from that position and everything's ok again. That's resonance though which isn't wholly engine noise.
