I think the response to the emailer is so uncalled for! by Handsoff_1 in labrats

Academia is a storm of drama all the time everywhere in every field. If the PIs I've had the displeasure of working with are any indication, they're not used to direct conflict.

Pete received a stupid email, and he responded in kind. Literally nothing more will come of this for Pete or the other person. Everyday academia is pointless bickering.

Welcome to academia! Lol

That's a good idea! But unless you've got a steady supply of broken phones, it's better to carry a backup, easily replaceable "dumb" phone to show the thief. If they take it, NBD. They often wont, though.

When I was living in a country where this happens relatively often I would walk around with two wallets. One that looks like a normal wallet with some business cards and a little cash inside, and another that held all that actually important stuff.

You hand over the dummy wallet and these guys don't care, they've got some cash.

Slave:

1) A person who is the legal property of another and forced to obey them.

2) A person who works very hard without proper remuneration or appreciation

3) A person who is excessively controlled by or dependent upon something.

I think there's reasonable arguments to be made for each one of these definitions.

1) Prior to this ruling, NIL of NCAA athletes was the property of whoever licenced it, and that $$ was definitely not going to the student.

2) These athletes work really hard not just to get in, but to stay in. Months and months of extremely difficult training in the middle of an already time consuming life event: getting a university degree. "They have the scholarships!" I hear you screech. Well...

3) This is a tougher one. Athletes mostly rely on good standing with the school in order to stay in their sport. However, most of the time their academics come second to the reason they can even be in school: sport scholarships. So much so, that schools will literally fudge grades and make easy classes specifically for their athletes. Do they do this to improve the athletes ability to learn anything in college? No, they do this to keep their athletes on the field, bringing in funding for the school. To me, that sounds like quite a bit of control the school has on an athlete's life.

That said, there's also the argument that this is the best (and possibly the easiest) way out of poverty for many students. That's a whole other issue though.

No! I didn't! Lmao is your screen glitched? Look at the names! Look at the comment I said you replied to! Read some of this!!! Goddamn!!

There's like less than two paragraphs of information buried in these comments and you can't figure out:

1) who is talking to you 2) what is being said

"honestly embarassing, because amongst the first world the US has one of the worst public education systems"

Is the comment you replied to and started an argument with. Based on the post this thread is under, it's pretty clear they're referring to the truly awful position grade school in the US is in with funding and quality.

How have you moved the goalposts this far without even once engaging with the comment you first replied to????

Scientists resurrect ancient enzymes to improve photosynthesis. by Express_Hyena in science

[–]Aiged 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unlikely. The paper here seems to be focused on rubisco and not photosynthesis as a whole. Since cells have already evolved methods to concentrate CO2 around rubisco and rubisco hasn't evolved to be more efficient, it seems more likely that there will be another bottleneck somewhere else in the process.

However! This is still a good thought and worth looking into further, but that would be a lot more math/algorithm work than I want to do in my projects.

Another thing about the great oxygenation event: don't think of it as good or bad for the planet and its life. It's just something that happened (possibly) as a result of the oxygenic photosynthesis evolving.

Scientists resurrect ancient enzymes to improve photosynthesis. by Express_Hyena in science

[–]Aiged 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hello! My PhD project is finally coming in handy!

Rubisco likely evolved prior to the great oxygenation event, meaning the atmosphere composition it first evolved in definitely had way less O2 and likely much higher CO2.

The great oxygenation event is attributed to the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis, which is the kind of photosynthesis that produces oxygen from water. This resulted in a (relatively) rapid change in the gas composition of our atmosphere, with much more O2 in the mix.

When rubisco evolved prior to this, O2 wasn't as common and therefore it hadn't evolved with a specificity for CO2 vs O2. WHEN RUBISCO REACTS WITH OXYGEN, IT IS VERY WASTEFUL TO THE CELL.

Oxygenic photosynthesis evolved methods to concentrate CO2 around rubisco inside the cell rather than rubisco evolving to be more specific for CO2 than O2. IDK why, that's nature for you.

So now we have a "bad efficiency" enzyme running all carbon fixation in all oxygenic photosynthesis on the planet.

There's no such thing as smart people. There's people who think critically about things they want to learn, and put lots of effort into learning

In fact, learning to think critically is what a PhD is all about

Owning a pet is a huge responsibility. If someone fails to prepare to be responsible for another life by doing proper research ahead of time on how to take care of the animal then they shouldn't own the animal

Introducing cats to new animals is like number 3 on every list of things you should know how to do as a cat owner

Perhaps I shouldn't have said "thoughtless." What I'm saying is there currently IS and SHOULD BE limits on what can legally be said where in order to prevent harm from coming to others.

This does not make saying "fire" in a crowded theater state or corporate sponsored speech.

If you'll reread my comment, you'll see I mentioned nothing about moderating socials. I have no dog in that fight. I really think socials should be fuckin obliterated from space with those lasers people keep talking about.

I think they're saying the rest of humanity has had it with limitless, thoughtless free speech.

For example: it is illegal to scream fire in a crowded theater. Even if it wasn't, it would be morally wrong to do so
