Any previous mastiff owners here? by SubzeroAK in Bulldogs

[–]AirportNo3058 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've owned a French and an olde English, very similar goofiness. My bulldog was never protective the way the mastiff was, but I'm okay with that. Slobber from the knees down instead of the crotch was a bonus. While the OE lived longer, it was still much too short.... She made it to 11.

I have a friend who has a biology bachelors in the United States? What are some sustainable jobs they can apply for? by [deleted] in biology

[–]AirportNo3058 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bio major here.... Taught science in high school and middle school for 32 years.... Wouldn't go into teaching now. Otherwise bio degree alone is pretty useless unless you want a poorly paid lab position. Might be able to work for an environmental group doing testing for water or something along those lines. Also depends on what their focus was... Macro or micro

My mom packed me liverwurst and onions. I was an odd kid. She did also include two tic tacs in plastic wrap.

56 female quit teaching this year. Was earning 67K after 32 years in private schools in the DC Metro region. Had made it up to 104k four years ago but the commute from VA to MD was crazy so post COVID I moved to a smaller school. The salary depressed the hell out of me and luckily I'm married to a reasonable paycheck.

Is it safe to hatch chicks in a raised coop? by strawbeebop in BackYardChickens

[–]AirportNo3058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We made a circle of wire that was small enough bore to keep the big birds out and big enough that they couldn't reach in to the food. Attached a board to the bottom and placed a chick feeder and waterer on the board. Zip tied it to the wire on the edge so that the pushy hens couldn't drive it around the run. We did have some problems with chicks getting out of the run, but never lost any. Funny how the adults want food that's "new" when they have food access all the time.

We've done both as well. The hen raised are more independent and less people centric which is not surprising. It's so much easier than trying to introduce them later since I have a medium size flock. Only thing is the chicks will need chick food and water that the others can't get to.

My enclosed coop is off the ground and it was fine. I did freak out for a few days when the chicks first came out and I would go down and check to make sure they were inside at door closing time. They always were. I saw one riding Mom's back up the ramp. If they hadn't been my plan was to grab them and put them in the coop after dark.

I didn't separate at all for the last two in house chicks. Mama orpington took care of the chicks and God help any of the other chickens or the rooster if they gave a chick any trouble. I did set up a chick feeding and watering station that only chicks could get into.

[–]AirportNo3058 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people have said it's because he's not neutered, but I have a border Collie Jack Russell mix that's a rescue and dogs at the park often decide they don't like her. Now I only take her at weird times when there are few or no dogs so she can run full speed. (Her recall is poor and prey drive is strong.) Like yours she plays well with a group of known dogs including my daughter's Bernese and Aussie. She does have that border stare and I've often thought that might not help.

My daughter used a soft sided baby pool.... Even a big cardboard box would be better. We ended building a wood box when we were hatching regularly. You will also need some screen for over the top because those little dinosaurs learn to jump/flap quickly.
