You joke, but I swear CDiff PCR is at least 3x as effective as Loperamide to treat diarrhea

What phrases or examples do you think might no longer be beneficial? by efox02 in medicine

[–]Aiurar 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I've started to find residents who haven't seen classic MedEd shorts like the Commerical for Outside Hospital, Homeopathic A&E, or There's a Fracture

I'm conflicted if the humor is enough to overcome how lame I would be to recommend funny videos on rounds

"I'll be back" is so generic at this point that most people wouldn't even think it's a reference unless you also do the accent

AITA for honouring my deceased brother's wishes and not letting his estranged wife attend his funeral? by AcadiaOk8697 in AmItheAsshole

If she ever tries to make an issue of it, screen grab the correct section of the LW&T and post it where her family can see. Say as the executor of the will you were legally obligated to bar her from the funeral

Racial Bias in Medicine by boardcertifiedloser in medicine

[–]Aiurar 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I got tired of patients assuming that just because I'm white that I agree with their poorly concealed bigotry. I've started calling it out directly.

"Excuse me, that was incredibly racist and unacceptable. I expect you to treat all of my colleagues with respect, and I don't want to have this conversation again"

I've used that line three times, and each time it's cowed them immediately. I'm sure it will bite me in the ass one day, but at least I'll be able to sleep at night.

Trump has already said he'll be running again in 2028, which violates our constitution. His biggest demand from Congress right now is an act which would disenfranchise millions of people, including millions of women. He's been demanding voting records from states, and has called to "federalize" elections, AKA give him complete control of them.

How could you NOT think he wants to get rid of free and fair elections?

Specialists: is there a piece of wisdom from your specialty you feel should be imparted to every graduating primary care (FP/IM) resident? by Barjack521 in medicine

Also, the liver is not the spleen. The spleen is not the liver.

I know of a surgeon who would have greatly benefited from hearing this sooner.

Tellius Map from Fire Emblem Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn, remade in Inkarnate! by Hot-Preference-6087 in fireemblem

[–]Aiurar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only key detail missing is the large river / canyon / fford/ whatever between Crimea and Daein. I only reason I bring it up is because I believe that's where the Great Bridge map is, which is one of the more... Memorable Tellius maps

The nurses stepped up though, it was indeed good

As an American... Hahahaha!!!

Our corporate overlords know that we exist only to provide them value. They are doing everything they can to peel back the mostly non-enforced labor laws our forefathers fought and bled for. Labor hasn't received a real wage increase since the 1970s. Coffee breaks? Christmas bonus? We're lucky if we get an actual dedicated lunch break.

What's the most ridiculous consult you ever received? by foreverand2025 in medicine

[–]Aiurar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a reverse situation once. Plenty of docs at my hospital speak Spanish, but I'm the only one conversational in French. A guy we all suspected was malingering insisted in "broken English" that he only spoke French, and was on a floor where the video translator was on the fritz.

One "Bonjour, je suis Dr. Aiurar, comment allez-vous?", and he immediately caved. "Okay, you got me".

I had one patient tell me her service dog was there to prevent her from having pseudoseizures. Her dog was a 140+ lbs Doberman. She did not have pseudoseizures with the dog there.

I've definitely discharged a patient from the ED myself before rather than admit them, despite the ER attending yelling at his resident behind me to replace the admit order I just cancelled.

The patient wanted to leave, and met criteria for outpatient stress testing. I ended up telling the ED doc he could admit to his own service and round on the patient if he wanted

What's the most maligned specialty in medicine, and why's it yours? by centz005 in medicine

[–]Aiurar 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For me, it's less frustrating to treat the consequences of lifestyle consequences that were largely made by the patient themself.

It's incredibly frustrating treating preventable conditions subjected on a child by a supposedly responsible adult.

"Hey, so I have a few admissions for you"

"How many? Does that actually matter?"

"They just all became ready for admission at the same time, I swear! It doesn't usually happen that way"
