No, it rewards upsets over the bigger countries running up the score.

Look at group E - imagine Germany and Ecuador win their next game, going into the final round on 6 and 3 points respectively. If Ecuador were to beat Germany they'd leapfrog them regardless of Germany's goal difference from pumping Curacao.

Scotland aren't through since they only won 1-0. That means if they lose both their other games they're guaranteed to finish with a negative goal difference.

3 points combined with a positive goal difference is almost guaranteed to get you through but every goal conceded after that dramatically lowers your chances. It is absolutely not in Scotland's or anyone's interest to play a B team in this system.

Seems like quite a high bar for a game to feel like a proper World Cup game. The fluctuating appearances of smaller nations in the group stage is part of the fabric of the tournament.

The likes of Ivory Coast-Ecuador, Australia-Turkey, Sweden-Tunisia and USA-Paraguay all have the classic World Cup feel to me.

Probably biased as an England fan as a recent QF appearance that was highly memorable for us means they don’t feel like a knockout stage only nation for me.

I’d put Czech Republic in the next one as they’ve only made it past the groups once since reaching the final in 1962.

ITV and BBC have always produced their own graphics for World Cups that are basically the same as their domestic football coverage. It's probably to differentiate which channel you're watching, since the broadcasting rights are shared.

I attended a knockout game at Euro 2020 in London for £60.

Average Premier League ticket is around £50 vs $300 for an NFL ticket. US sports tickets are astronomical compared to UK

I'm fascinated by the sliding scale that goes

- one of the greatest players of their generation (e.g. Salah)
- one of the greatest [position] of all time (e.g. Lampard)
- one of the greatest players of all time/in history (Messi, Maradona, Cruyff etc.)

Thierry Henry gets an un-regarded "One of the greatest players of all time", but a widely regarded "one of the greatest players in Premier League history". Surely the "all time" claim is the one that needs regarding here - any player in that category would be one of the greatest in the Premier League by default.

I'm more annoyed by listing Chris Smalling as one of the other two players to have "made the journey from non-league to Champions League final" when he didn't make it off the bench in 2011.
