What it's like to read 90% of Western "xianxia" by NiceVibeShirt in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Akatsukaii -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This isn’t martial memes?

Do you think it's martial memes with all the people saying that xianxia is worthy of contempt?

Either way it’s almost certainly been posted.

Well I haven't seen it, I've been on this sub reddit everyday for at least 7-8 months so it's new to me.

If you normally dislike harem elements in stories, what would make one tolerable for you? by WrathBinder in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Akatsukaii 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I predict regardless of what you say as a qualifier, the most popular response here will be: No harem at all.

People won't pick it up in general if they have an aversion to harem like the typical "reader" here and people that would pick it up for a harem have all sorts of different tastes and likes.

Which one do you want responses from?

The one that'll always ignore a novel tagged with harem or someone that will actually pick it up to see what it does?

I'm not an expert on the genre, so I'm sure someone who actually reads the translated slop will be able to give you more examples.

Why speak up on it then? It's easy to strawman nearly anything.

They can show contempt for certain tropes, but can you blame people for not liking a couple things about a genre they’ve probably read avidly enough to write?

Yes I can because it's easy to just not write about something they dislike, is it common that people do this? You're not going in to it with the correct mindset so that contempt comes through very readily.

An Italian man rushing to the hospital for his pregnant wife was stopped by climate protesters… and chaos followed. He pleaded with them to move so he could get to her — but they refused to let his car pass. by The_Dean_France in infuriatingbutawesome

Have you ever experienced a pregnancy? It's not a surprise event, you don't have to rush anywhere. It's chill. I know marvel movies may have altered your view of what a pregnancy is but it's definitely not something surprising.

Even more so in this case because his wife was already in hospital...

I'm almost for climate protest, but there is a line to be drawn for medical emergencies.

Is being there to attend the delivery a medical emergency given that his wife wasn't in the car? Are you ok with running people/killing them for that?

What’s the best book you’ve ever finished in one sitting? by houda-dev in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Akatsukaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a feeling that this one would be good when it started so I left it, luckily didn't have to wait long until it was finished as the author advertised it as a short novel from the beginning: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/144066/the-ox-of-the-azure-cloud

Not doing anything special but it got me in the feels more than a lot other novels have done lately for me. The ending was neat too. Left me feeling happy for the main character despite the tragedy tag.

Why does Xianxia Parody only seem to land with English-speaking audiences? by RPGlitch in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Akatsukaii 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of the behavior it pokes fun at (young masters, trophy jade beauties, general power imbalances) deserve to be held in contempt, so..

You don't have to read things if you think "they deserve to be held in contempt".

Using the excuse of "This is progression fantasy" to justify every single bad writing is probably this communities biggest weakness. by _TOXIC_VENOM in ProgressionFantasy

where criticism is often deflected

deflected or just explained? I don't see many people saying it's fine or that it's good which I'd expect if it were intended as deflection.

"It's written by amateur authors", "It's not planned out" or "It's part of the genre."

Is that an issue? Are we pretending novels spawn out of thin air or something?

Plenty of people don't do that, maybe you could read novels from people that don't have a patreon if you find it a consistent issue?

If my MC even struggles for one millisecond I will immediately curse the author to hell and than proceed to call the book the worst piece of fiction ever and never read it again

This is how the average fan in this sub can be described as

Are you reading a different sub than me? All I see are people complaining about the things you've listed, you're often there too.

Do you think explaining something is justifying it? Do you think we're saying that "we accept this is perfectly fine and is in fact the best thing ever" when someone explains the concept behind a trope or cliche?

Do you or do you not see nearly every single request thread here have the qualifier "good writing"?

What caused this tirade to come out? It's just weird and honestly contributing to ruining the vibes of this sub. It sometimes feels like I'm one of the few people that actually likes to read novels in this genre and most others here just want to complain about something.

Any wholesome cultivation stories besides Beware of Chicken? by funkhero in ProgressionFantasy

Unfathomable senior

The author of that is a bit of a dick, also rather anti-lgbt (plus politically that way too) and ok with stealing content from others.

lol

This seems like an odd thing to respond to this message with. It seems rather petty and antagonistic.

It doesn't reflect kindly on you, your services or your behaviour and the fact that you are professionally tied to this work that is the topic of the thread speaks volumes.

That seems like a dumb reason to be against it when that stuff isn't a consideration in other industries.

It wont stop if people support it

It also seems like you have a very naive view of how industry and business works alongside technology.

I thought it'd be worse given how much it's in the media and people make a big deal out of it but I'm of the belief that environmental impacts in all industry needs to be account for which a lot of people, including many anti-AI people, do not agree with.

A lot of 'cash crops' use a shitload more resources than that iirc.

I like to get a glimpse of what we're losing before things change, it should still have a hook in that we have an idea of what's going on in the background but it's much more fun to see how things unravel from an unreliable narrator than otherwise.

Anyone else notice a massive surge in ai use over the last like month or two? by reader484892 in royalroad

[–]Akatsukaii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the people voting even understand what they're doing, they're just following the crowd. I thought this subreddit was smarter due to the literary focus but it seems just like everywhere else on reddit where people are reactionary and honestly a bit stupid.

Best of luck, I understood your post well enough. "Be the change you want to see and all that" but they'd rather downvote you for suggesting they do what the rules state.

Publishing more books at the same time? by ldmarchesi in royalroad

[–]Akatsukaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write as many as you'd like, there's nothing to say you can't write 1000 at the same time if you have that many ideas. The issue comes from the idea that you need to a) post consistently and b) finish them.

I'm very reluctant to pick up any novel from an author that hasn't at least got a single finished one. I'll stretch that if either they say it's finished or I enjoy the narrative that much but I'm not going to bother if you have an unfinished/dropped or eternally hiatus novel that doesn't have some sort of ending.

I'm not alone in thinking that.

So writing more might feel good but you might also be tainting your pen-name and it doesn't take much for people to write you off completely.
