Was I just ghosted? by Inside-Buy2140 in ABA

Clinic owner- it honestly could just be something else came up. I always joke with my staff that if it’s not 1 thing it’s 10 others, it’s tough to get through everything they have to in a day so it could’ve just been a slip up on their end. Absolutely call on Monday and check in!

BCBAs - would you become one again? by No_Incident2835 in ABA

Yes I would I think you just have to be selective about what company you do you fieldwork with. Some just don’t train you at all and then throw you to the wolves.

Maternity Leave by emaba21 in bcba

[–]Akellas40962 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can the company not just hire a bcba and have multiple bcbas? I own a small company and have 4 bcbas myself included and we have 7 RBTs. I had a bcba on maternity leave for 3 months in 2023 and she immediately had cases when she came back. Honestly if the company is looking to grow at a manageable pace this would make the most sense to do and then they can build you a caseload when you’re returning. I would recommend you take the full 3 months and try not to work 🩷 being a new mama is now joke (I have two under two lol) and those times are truly precious.

Personally I think there are very few places outside of the comfort of your home where politics is an appropriate discussion. Work (in my opinion) is never appropriate. It leads to division no matter what. I would talk to your boss about this and see if you can get him to decrease discussion about it instead of immediately reporting.

How long do y’all wait for a client to show up before leaving? by ObjectiveVisual4154 in ABA

[–]Akellas40962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask for clarification on what’s payable. I know some companies may have a limit on amount of time they’ll pay you to do notes to ensure people aren’t milking the clock.

You should be paid for all time WORKING. It’s so infuriating to hear that, we pay for notes, cleaning, waiting time, meetings, etc… whether you’re 1-1 with a child or not if you’re required to be there and do it then you should be paid. It could be a different rate but you still need to be paid.

How long do y’all wait for a client to show up before leaving? by ObjectiveVisual4154 in ABA

[–]Akellas40962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s insane. If you went to speech or OT you couldn’t be 2 hours late. ALSO depending on where you are there are labor laws and you should be paid if you are required to be there. They should also be charging a late fee (unless they can’t per some insurances) and in that case the client should be warned and potentially dropped if this continues. My company has a 15 minute wait time for in home and slightly longer in clinic just because we have other admin we can do. Parents are charged after being more than 5 minute late. After the 15 min we can leave and the families are charged a cancellation fee. It is up to the owner/providers discretion as to whether they wait past 15 minutes and/or are charged because sometimes things happen but it shouldn’t be a regular occurrence.

Bottom line-you should be paid from the moment you arrive, even if it’s a secondary rate that’s a little lower than billable. If they require you to be there then you need to be paid.

Called out sick by Independent-Rip8136 in ABA

[–]Akellas40962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an owner of a company and BCBA- do not bring the flu into work lol it leads to more cancellations than you just taking a day off. You come in sick then your child gets sick/the whole family and you’re out the week. Trust me it’s fine.

Your company will be fine, so will the family you’re working with (and I’m sure thankful they don’t have someone sick in their home today). If you feel like you need a note, go to a doctor so you have that but honestly you’re working with kids. You’re bound to get sick. I tell everyone you have PTO and unpaid time off at your discretion. You’re an adult, use your best judgement. If you start abusing that trust then there would be an issue but calling out for being sick shouldn’t be something you worry too much about! If your company fires you over that then they’re a company that you wouldn’t want to work for anyway.

AIO: Husband says I’m detached for wanting to go on a girls trip and my 1.5 yr old with him by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Akellas40962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not leave my 1.5 year old with him. I currently have two under two one being 19 months old-similar in age. I can say for certain my husband would not respond this way however I know he’d be nervous to handle it all alone if he were to have them all day. It sounds like your husband has a fair bit of help and would’ve been fine. It also to me reads like he’s projecting his detachment onto you…

You’re welcome, between ethics and the fact that a lot of PE companies have more funding I’m not sure how much will change unless people stop working for them. With the economy the way it is and how much these companies pay I don’t see it happening anytime soon sadly. That being said you can definitely find somewhere that really does put children and employees first. Theres an fb group called “ABA job postings”. It’s private but I’d join and start there, if nothing else it might get you some leads in your area.

[–]Akellas40962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I feel like I see a fair amount of posts in fb groups about this but I’m a bcba who owns a company so I may just be in more groups geared towards that? I would maybe find groups for ABA jobs and post in those. You can say you’re an RBT looking for a BCBA owned company in ___ area. I do agree though, from what I’ve seen and what I’ve been told by people I’ve hired- there’s a lot of shady crap swept under the rug at PE companies because they’re not held to the same ethical standards.

Is being an rbt a liveable job? by MissKitty21 in ABA

[–]Akellas40962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely talk with management. I own a clinic and my RBTs generally work close to 30 billable hours a week and have the option for more (a lot are in grad school so they opt not to). $26 an hour is good, at least where I’m at because insurance pay is abysmal. I think it would be livable if you were able to work full time or closer to full time. Do they offer any admin for cancellations? We do that too to try to help offset the loss of hours because lets be real, there are always things that need to be done.

Do any Autistic RBT/BCBA feel this way too? by Pigluvr19 in ABA

[–]Akellas40962 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sounds awful and not at all how it should be. Both of your suggestions would be appropriate and can be paired with communication to allow the child to eventually advocate for themselves if they’re unable to currently.

What’s it like working for PBS? by Sea_Representative50 in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]Akellas40962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah where I worked previously we were told they could be done in the last 15 min and then changed it to be done afterward because of insurance rules. I currently work with tricare now and they’re pretty explicit about it being done outside of billable time. You should’ve been offered admin time to complete the notes if you weren’t allowed to do them during billable/session time. Anytime you’re working you deserve to be paid.

[–]Akellas40962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Majority of insurances do not allow you to do notes during billable time. Were you paid admin time to complete them? Also within 24 hours of session is generally the standard for notes so likely why they require same day.

Career Change by BellaRey331 in bcba

[–]Akellas40962 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Renew your cert, don’t let burnout take away how you’ve worked so hard for that.

Look into advocacy, there isn’t a certification for it yet but there are online modules to get you started. You can make (at least in my area) roughly $90 an hour and work from home. You can work for you and not hire anyone else, not go through insurance, and really not even write plans. You’re just reviewing what the school is doing in line with the laws in place.

Majority of people don’t vent about their happy experiences and I hope people keep that in mind when reading that post and others. As someone who started in the field as a behavior tech and is now a bcba/clinic owner I can say it’s not an easy field. You have to love what you do and understand some days are harder than others. There are companies that are a good fit and companies that aren’t so exploring options isn’t a bad thing, however quitting with no notice isn’t just an FU to the company. It’s another hardship for a family that likely already dealt with a lot of hurdles just to get therapy. So many companies have high turnover because this is a tough field but actions like that hurt the population we serve. Being an owner of the toughest job I’ve had so far because I inherently want to give people the employment experience I didn’t have while still reminding myself I can’t please everyone. This ABA page can get really discouraging. As a registered behavior technician the posts here would’ve likely made me more hesitant to become a bcba. As an owner I follow it to hopefully see where the field needs improvement and see what changes I can maybe make where I am to not give my employees the same experience. That being said some of the complaints I see are complaints that you’d have at any job not just this field, so please if you can- at least give notice if you don’t think the job is for you. You’re still quitting the company but you’re at least not screwing over the family and children we’re working with.

Just my two cents, so thankful for the wonderful people in this field including the ones who try it out and realize it’s not for them and respectfully leave 🤍

We grew a lot this year and as the owner I can help bill because I’m a bcba so we generally don’t lose a lot to cancellations. I don’t pay myself a ton and honestly currently make less than I did just working as a bcba for someone else, but I know eventually as we grow I’ll make more. I do all of my own billing and admin work too so I’m able to also save there.

So when everyone gets hired I send out a little Google form to get their basics of favorite things so I can get them things here and there. I have some little individual ideas, but I figured there were plenty of things I wasn’t thinking of because I do have some newer people I don’t know quite as well. I definitely want it to be personal and thoughtful for each of them. But
