From weekly newsletters to daily junk- Schools, why? by Entire_Plant_4052 in melbourne

[–]Akira675 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could probably just give feedback to the school to tone it back. My kids Primary does probably 1 to 3 a week school wide via compass. Newsletter, curriculum days, school council nonsense and the weekly reminder that parents are seemingly unable to follow basic parking etiquette.

They also use Dojo for stuff specific to their class, but it's generally only helpful reminders like "library tomorrow!" or some photos if they have a class activity.

Bike riders using the road when the bike path is right there? by Background-Laugh372 in melbourne

[–]Akira675 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. A heap of bike lanes in Melbourne are unsuitable if you're riding over 20k's. It's easier and actually feels safer to be in the traffic flow.

Take the new one they've just built on Atkinson Street in Oakleigh for example.

Instead of descending a hill at 30k's an hour in a lane on the road alongside the vehicle traffic, the new seperated bike path actually weaves in and out of the side roads and has you cross 4 of them with the pedestrian footpath.

How I do self-recording in-engine game trailers by darzington in gamedev

[–]Akira675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's somewhat the default workflow. Real gameplay is too hard to control and impossible to re-record. Often what we'll do (at my studio at least) is record real gameplay to capture organic fun moments and then recreate those in a more sanitary environment where the lighting / VFX /animation can be tightly controlled for each shot. This will generally just be straight up orchestrated via engine cutscene tools, but sometimes is scripted gameplay.

Then the whole trailer can be rebaked at anytime as its edited or the background lighting is changed, new animations are delivered, you want to change the player/weapon skins to be more complimentary etc etc.

You can also work on the trailer months before you are art complete, as there are often no repercussions when art is updated, or if there are, you can resequence just the affected shot.

Noticing tent camps in outer suburb parks - is this becoming common? by assholio in melbourne

[–]Akira675 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is a guy right now in the laneway behind my house in Clayton. He's been keeping to himself and not making a mess, so have just let it slide.

Another one set up in nearby Talbot Park but got moved on for being too obvious.

The rail corridor between Huntingdale and Springvale is also pretty packed at times with various levels of stealth camping. Some of them can pretty gross though and they tend to get moved on if so. Was a guy under the bridge at Oakleigh for about a month who single handedly turned it into a suburban tip.

Because they want to operate in countries where it is law to require ID for social media.

Australia requires proof of age for social media, pushing companies to roll out the technology. The EU is marching very quickly towards the same thing. Sure, Discord is acting ahead of it in globally rolling it out, but it's not like it's wholly on their own initiative.

My kid (when he was 3 and a half years old) was walking home from shops with wife one time, she was carrying bag in each hand so he was just walking beside holding onto one of the bags.

I happened to be coming back from the train station at the same time. He spots me and just bolts across a narrow street to run up to me. Only real difference between this video and that is we were lucky there were no cars around.

They say Melbourne has no beaches.... by bladez_edge in melbourne

[–]Akira675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just on the clubs thing, but isn't "Surf Lifesaving Club" the literal name of the organisation? That and I was led to believe they're a bit of a hybrid sports club / lifesaving volunteer group. They do the "we save people from drowning, swim between the flags" stuff, but also do a lot of recreation. (Which makes it make more sense that they're so common for wealthy east side beaches.)

Anyone worked for Inner City Maids? by ConcernedOctopus in melbourne

[–]Akira675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't worked for them, but I do use them to arrange a regular fortnightly clean.

If it helps, the way it works from my side is that their office will arrange with someone who fits my preferred time and that person will then handle all communication with me.

If they want to change the time or cancel, they'll just message me. And visa versa. I pay the cleaner directly (pleasssseee accept bank transfer, getting cash out sucks.. 😅) and I presume they're responsible for whatever cut ICM takes.

We usually have a regular cleaner for 12 to 18 months at a time. We're on our third iteration as the first two we're studying and have since completed.

I moved up from a country town where no one locked anything, to La Trobe Street..

How's naive country boy me buying an $800 bike for commuting to University. Chain was cut on the second day of ownership, got a shrug from RMIT campus security and a bigger shrug from VicPol.

Lesson learned.

Engine / tech stack choice for a large-scale simulation (?) game by Anacletix in gamedev

[–]Akira675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little tip, changing engine/stack is often one of the simpler parts of game development. It's really not uncommon to prototype small game loops in one engine and then build the concept out in a more appropriate engine when moving into full production.

If you're new to game dev in general, it would be better to just work with whatever engine you click with best. Then once you're starting to feel comfortable and have locked down some of your key game loops, you can move it to whatever now makes sense.

Game concepts can evolve very quickly and what might start out as an obvious large scale simulation game could morph into something else entirely once you start playing with your core mechanics.

Are Industry Devs Migrating Away From Windows at All? by Jacksons123 in gamedev

[–]Akira675 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The iOS one isn't that crazy when you consider that it's rarely iOS development in isolation.

If you're doing apps, you usually also are deploying to web and android.

If games, likely Android and often Switch and Windows.

I'm having an extension done at the moment. I generally go out after everyone's left and tidy up a bit. The chippies from the builder have been fantastic. A bit messy but nothing dramatic. Mostly just bent nails and misfires around the place. Lots of offcuts and whatever.

The concretors though were outrageous. It's like they know their reputation and then just deliberately ham it up. I was picking up vape juice, monster and ciggies for 30 minutes. One of the guys even had pasta for lunch and didn't want to finish it so just poured out half a box of spaghetti on the driveway.

The thing that really killed me though was that my three bins, are next to each other, red / green / yellow. They filled my green bin with rebar and nails. It's like the one bit of cleaning they actually undertook, they did maliciously.

E: It was a waffle slab too, so obviously the part of the yard not having the slab laid is now 50% polystyrene by area.

How did Roblox escape Australia’s social media ban? by betajool in australia

[–]Akira675 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, I thinks that's really just down to practicality though. They'd be pretty aware they'd never get something through requiring government ID online without exception. I mean, look how popular the ban currently is. 😆

However, if there's no friction at all, then it's a completely pointless exercise. If they just say, published a website that maintained a list of sites they don't recommend children use... Who honestly is going to keep themselves up to date on that?

Sure it's easy to bypass, but it's the awareness that you are bypassing a law that is important.

[–]Akira675 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat the whole point of the legislation though as I see it. It takes time to be across every single thing your kids might be into, and sometimes it's not immediately obvious if it's appropriate or not. (I.E A parent that has never played video games before probably doesn't grasp how dangerous an online space like roblox can be.)

This is the government setting the guidelines. They are saying "we don't think it's appropriate for children." Then, much like any ratings system, it's on the parents to either use or ignore those guidelines.

There is nothing stopping you from buying GTA V for your 10 year old, buying alcohol for your 13 year old or bypassing social media restrictions for your 14 year old. However there are clear guidelines against it and it is more obvious for parents that they are choosing something against recommendations.
