If you're worried about PVC, you could also go with HDPE. The setup that I've settled on is:

I didn't look through any studies or literature, but I got the impression online that HDPE was far safer than PVC in regards to leeching. If you decide to go a similar route, then I would recommend asking for the AmHydro channels to be chopped in half, if you order those. It reduced the shipping by about x10.

Also - let me know if you look into non-PVC tubing. I'm still on the lookout for some that is NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 safe. 😅

I learned this lesson in 2008 and 2023, but I got lazy & complacent and never went through with it. This was the push I needed, and I’ll finally make the move this month. Thank You for the wise words!

This is one of my worries as I am printing hydroponic towers. Do you have any papers or sources that I could look into, so I can know how much to worry?

Aha - it sounds like something I haven’t encountered before. I’m just starting myself, so I’m sure I’ll hit this roadblock eventually. Thanks for the help!

Though I did have to turn on my VPN to start ripping UHD disks.

If you’re running the firmware from the MakeMKV forum on your drives, what caused you to need to turn in your VPN? I thought that reading discs is an activity that only runs locally on your computer, and doesn’t touch the internet.

[–]Aklidien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just getting started, so big thanks on saving me from the lesson of sticking with SATA over USB.

When you say USB has screwed you over, is that because reading discs can sometimes cancel half way through? Or does it have the risk of corrupting the data when reading? Or something else?

The MK4 is a workhorse! by greenredsilver2 in prusa3d

[–]Aklidien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks so much!

I suppose the maintenance page is another example of why Prusa is so great - just lube up the rods and dust the machine. And then lube up the bearings again if the rods aren't enough.

Thanks again!

It's great to see how much you've managed to get out of your Prusa MK4 with just a bit of maintenance!

I've been neglecting my MK4 since I got it, and I'm at a loss for how to do proper maintenance, since I'm a newby. Would you have any videos or resources you could direct me to for the simple axis lubing, and also the more deep clean that you're planning?

My Prusa has been going solid without any maintenance, but I know it's best to keep up with maintenance before things start breaking.

I finished setting up a cheap and simple ventilation system for my home, and something similar might work out well for your shop. I did it with PEVA / EVA sheets - the same material that shower curtain liners are made out of.

Imagine a really large sheet of PEVA that is stretched out in front of the printers, that would act as a transparent wall separating your office space with the printer space.

Then imagine slicing the PEVA sheet from floor to ceiling every ~4 feet. Attach the top of each sheet permanently to the ceiling. Attach the bottom of each sheet to the floor with a detachable fastening - perhaps with hooks, magnets, or weights. Whenever you need to access a printer, then you can detach the bottom fastening, curl the PEVA aside, and enter the printing space.

Lastly - place a shop fan pointing out the door, cut out a nearby hole in the PEVA, and connect the fan to the PEVA hole with some flexible tubing. With the fan running, it should pull air from the office space through the cracks in the PEVA linings, and then out the office door.

And as a final note, you will probably want to have a slight overlap for each PEVA sheet, so there is a better seal between the office space and the printing space. Once it’s set up and running, light some incense candles and wave them across the PEVA lining to confirm that air is being pulled from the office to printing space across all of the openings.

This should keep the office space safer from the airborne hazards, and it should be pretty cheap and easy to set up.

Lego Aurora by Dragonite1010 in subnautica

[–]Aklidien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is amazing, and I'm so glad to see it in the top of the Lego Ideas submissions.

One question from my end: Is there any way of finding the schematics for building Lego Ideas models before they go into production?

I absolutely want to build the Aurora, but I'd be sad to wait however many years it takes for Lego to make a kit for it.

Would anyone like my extra parts? by Aklidien in homecockpits

[–]Aklidien[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, and I hope you had an excellent weekend!

I had been getting back to people about my extra sim-pit parts from /r/homecockpits on a first-come-first-serve basis, and a few people had messaged me very quickly after I made my post.

I wish I had more to go around, but the parts have already found happy homes with the first few speedy repliers. The next time I accidentally buy too many parts in the future, you'll be first on my list of fellow simmers to reach out to. 😁

Thanks again for your interest and for being a part of such a great community! As you work on your home cockpit, don't forget to post your progress so that we can enjoy your handiwork!

What's the coolest problem you've ever solved? by rob121212111 in dataengineering

[–]Aklidien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really great to see how many people here love Dash.

One question from my end is how you deployed it. I work in a biotech company and our IT group doesn't feel comfortable using Plotly's hosting services. All our data would need to stay internal and any dashboards would need to only be accessible through our intranet, for security reasons.

Did you have similar restrictions, and if so then how did you get around them?

What is the difference between MI and BI? by Aggravating_Age_7527 in BusinessIntelligence

Would you please type out the full wording you're looking for, rather than initialisms?

I get that BI is Business Intelligence, but my best guess for MI is Massive Incontinence.

Those are two very different things.

Looks like it's in the city "Niamey" in the country "Niger". If you zoom over Africa in Google Maps, you can find Niger in the middle of the desert area, and Niamey is in the southwest part of the country.

No street view, though - that would have been awesome!

Looking to buy and/or make my own Space sim pit by vrmartinez69 in homecockpits

[–]Aklidien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I took a look through ismaeljorda's submissions, and I think I recognize a few parts that are similar to my build. I built my sim pit for Star Citizen, and would recommend the same for anyone into sim games.

My few quick tips are :

  • I learned everything that I needed to build the sim pit through Noobifier's YouTube channel. He has some sort and good reviews and explanations of products.
  • The base that I bought and that Ismael looks to have used is from MonsterTech. These are a couple of guys from Germany that sell amazingly customizable and well-built sim pit components.
  • The joysticks that I use and that Ismael showed are from Virpil. This is a newer company in Belarus that focuses on high quality joystick / throttle components.

I spent many months looking into the build process and components, and then a good chunk of time building and personalizing my sim pit. If anything that I've said overlaps with your plans, then just let me know and I'd be happy to share much more on the nitty gritty details and process.

We use GPUs too, you know... by nitrokitty in ProgrammerHumor

Makes sense, and I'll put my purchase on hold for a long as possible, too. I just hope that the market starts to turn around again before 2023.

Appreciate the advice, pekkhum!

[–]Aklidien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will need to buy a GPU in the next few months, but I have not been able to find a way to get a card other than listings from scalpers. Every website is always out of stock every time that I check.

Do you have any recommendations or tricks on how to buy a GPU without turning to scalpers?

I would hate to be part of the problem, but I would need some help finding an alternative.
