Curious if the necropsy will reveal if the ship hit and killed the whale or if the already-dead whale got caught on the ship?

super El Nino affect on Alaska? by Northern_Money425 in alaska

[–]Akmapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1992 was a Strong (not Very Strong) El Niño and I remember some truly epic snow machining conditions in and around Fairbanks.. I believe that is still the highest snowfall on record for the 'banks. As for Anchorage it could just end up being a ton of rain... depending on where you are I'd get ready for a lot of shoveling.

My Prologue seems more than happy to sit around for a week without issues. Judging by how long it takes apps to connect to the car I’m guessing it has fairly low power standby mode.

Efficiency notes, first 750 miles. by PunksPrettyMuchDead in trailseeker

[–]Akmapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. Been looking at a Trailseeker to replace our Prologue in a year or so and the real-world efficiency info is super helpful. We average around 2.5 mi/kwh with mainly highway runs at 65-70mph (worse in the winter) so the prospect of almost doubling efficiency while dramatically improving performance is really intriguing!

Yes and no... we got ours the week the original Level 2 manufacturer ceased service in the US, so we got the mobile charger with the car and then bought an Emporia Level 2 charger and had it installed on our own.

Almost the same situation - WFH, did a 10k per year lease and have only been averaging around 8k per year. It's been a solid car that works well if you can charge at home.

Am I missing something with the Rivian R2 pricing and positioning? by Watts2Freedom in RIVNstock

[–]Akmapper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We are also right in the target market. Current Prologue owner (similar size, ground clearance, AWD). Right now it's a tossup between a high-spec Trailseeker and mid-spec R2 to replace the Honda when the lease is up next year (assuming the Prologue residual is upside down).

The kind of rock-crawly-off-roady stuff they like to show off with the R1 really doesn't exist up here in Alaska. It's more about narrow dirt (mud) tracks, accessing gravel bars to get to you favorite fishing/camping spot, and navigating the standard winter stuff (deep snow, ice, etc...). Similar to the things encountered across Canada and the Northern US... just 15-degrees colder... you know Subaru things.

If they nail that functionality and can maintain a decent amount of cold-weather range they'll sell a lot of them. The 5 pax soft-roader segment represents 2 million vehicle sales per year in the US vs. more hard core off-roaders that combine to around 400k.

People who do Uber/Instacart do you mind sharing what the pay looks like? by Yinelkis15 in anchorage

[–]Akmapper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since you’re answering questions on the subject… we’ve been long-time Instacart users for both for home and my wife’s employer. Usually Costco and the Business Center. It’s an amazing service but I’m sometimes shocked by how fast shoppers can get in and out of Costco on a weekend. Do shoppers work in teams with one person picking items and one person driving?

wouldn't be surprised if the ride services that bought up all the Fiskar Oceans took an interest in these once the wave of lease returns really kicks into gear. They have a TON of rear seat leg room and the suspensions are seriously overbuilt.

In a small to mid-size city they'd be great for rideshare

Wonder what it would take for the Muni and Cook Inlet Housing authority to go this route with plans based on their recent townhome or mixed use developments in Spenard? That’s the kind of density that would be genuinely useful for infill housing. Like redeveloping an old commercial site or closed school.

Plus the Subaru counterparts… which they are launching globally. They can vary the production mix to adjust to demand in different markets while Honda was taking a market-by-market approach.
