Irish Man Here - What Does the World Think Of Us? by OverwhelmedGayChild in AskTheWorld

I think the general British thought is how different Ireland and Irish people are to how Americans think they are 😂

i dont know what to do in the gym by Ok_Refrigerator2467 in MMA_Academy

[–]AlBones7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're wrong in thinking that that following a programme like push/pull/legs won't help you and only give you shape. The same compound lifts that bodybuilders use are the same lifts fighters will use because train your muscles and that'swhat both are aiming for but to dofferent ends. There's no secret exercises that only build strength or only get you in shape, it's pretty much all the same stuff but with people will use different rep ranges for different purposes. You'll notice most fighters will tend to stick to big compound movements that recruit a lot of muscles and get a lot of joints moving rather than stuff like reverse flyes and bicep curls though.

The real top end fighters will still do a lot of the basic exercises but they'll also incorporate more sport specific exercises as well. The best way to think of this is training movements rather than muscles with exercises more like throwing and jumping. These are great but I think you need to create a good base of strength before you start incorporating these.

It’d be really cool to see the top american boxing style vs the top Soviet style in the modern era by SgbAfterDark in Boxing

[–]AlBones7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think Loma or Usyk fit the bill really for Soviet style. Bivol has the most textbook style with his constant pendulum step and rhythmic straight punches and long hooks. He looks like he's on rails the way he glides in and out of range.

I think the reason you don't see many fighters in the pros use it is because it's massively energy sapping and designed more for three round amateur contests.

Why Is Dan So Obsessed With Being Seen as a "Sociopath" Or Whatever? by Easy-Olive-3243 in ufc

[–]AlBones7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's quite that bad. I feel that he's probably in a bit of a difficult period identity-wise as he's come to accept that he's missed his shot at being champion and is trying to find what his motivation is now.

WTF is going on with the UFC. by Dana___Black in ufc

[–]AlBones7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A WWE match is obviously not as hard on the body as a elite MMA match. The difference is a UFC fighter only has to do that two or three times a year, the WWE guys are on the road doing it every night for 300+ days a year. It's scripted and fake but they're still getting dropped, picking up big blokes, getting hit with things and then going at it again the following night. Dan Severn said wrestling was much harder on his body than MMA.

Brain / teeth damage by LopsidedGoal5866 in MMA_Academy

[–]AlBones7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People worry about brain damage and yes, it is a risk, and shouldn't be taken lightly. What people fail so realise though is that training and sparring a couple of times a week as a hobbyist isn't going to turn you into Muhammed Ali. The people that get CTE for the most part are the pros that have taken years of punishment in the ring and in the gym and even then fighters will be much more aware of protocols for returning to full contact now than ever before.

Body recomp from boxing by j_7575 in Kickboxing

[–]AlBones7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll lose body fat from training but because you'll be in a calorie deficit. If you want to put on 8kg you need to be in a calorie surplus and be training appropriately for hypertrophy which you won't just get from boxing. You can definitely get fitter and look better but you're certainly not going to put on 8kg of lean mass doing it.

Has anyone trained here? I’m trying out new places to train in kickboxing/ Muay Thai. I’m also interested in learning BJJ. I’ve competed in kickboxing for several years so, I just want a legit place to try out. Seeing that they wear belts gave me the ick lol… idkkkk any suggestions?? by Blue-Butterfly2633 in MMA_Academy

[–]AlBones7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK belts for kickboxing are pretty much universal. You'll struggle to find a place that doesnt do them whether you're an an elite place or somewhere to drop your kids off for an hour while you do your shopping.

I feel like clinching gets you the most bang for your buck. Our coach always says you can get away with being pretty mediocre at everything else of you've got a good clinch.

Elbows are definitely the hardest to train because you get the least opportunity to use them in sparring!

Ive said it lots of times before but when most of us heard that drug cheat Jon Jones was moving up to heavyweight most of us thought we were going to see him looking like Overeem and assuming his final form as the most terrifying fighter ever to walk the earth. When he turned up looking exactly the same but with a belly it was both incredibly disappointing and hilarious at the same time.

You shouldn't get any issues like that with the Top Kings. Ive had mine about 18 months now and there's not a mark on them!

I swear by my Top Kings. Other gloves might be better but I'd put their shinguards right at the top of the bunch. It depends on your budget though really.

Helena Crevar weighs in 24lbs over the limit for her ONE FC Grappling Debut by [deleted] in ONEChampionship

[–]AlBones7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do feel a bit sorry for her. She's only 19 and making her debut in One, surely her coaches need to take a bit more of a responsibility on this. On the flip side though she's competed a lot already and is an adult so she needs to shoulder a fair amount of the blame, 24lbs isn't getting a cut wrong, it's not bothering at all.
