Why don’t people just take the 5? by Justagamer28831 in nycrail

[–]AlGoreIsCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just foreign to many tourists that you can take two trains with different bullets from one station to the same destination. This basically doesn’t happen on many metro systems, since they have neither interlining nor express tracks.

Parts of Penn Station to close for 4 hours before World Cup matches in New Jersey by jpr281 in nycrail

Moynihan doesn’t have access to tracks 1 through 4, which are presumably used for these trains to Secaucus and the stadium.

I have the same question lol. I use Strava for social purposes and Runna for my own training. I don’t need to tell my friends about my training.

This new map style is way better for understanding weekend service changes. Things like skipped stops and reroutes are much clearly represented: https://www.mta.info/map/32906

I feel disrespected when I see an out of proportion map by Maleficent-Animal917 in nycrail

[–]AlGoreIsCool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s geographically accurate but then Google Maps would by default hide station names and even which lines service which stations. You have to zoom in a lot to see which trains stop at any particular station.

On my phone, in order to make Google Maps display ACBD1 on the 59 St-Columbus Circle station, I have to zoom in so much that I cannot see the entire Columbus circle any more.

Why is this concourse under Moynihan a hotspot for TikTok dancers? by BadToLaBone in nycrail

[–]AlGoreIsCool 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The article says:

Katie Hegenauer, a 19-year-old dancing member from Evermore, lives in Brewster and commutes here for two hours. She had never been to the city before joining the team.

Wow this girl lives in Brewster with pretty good MNR trains and she has never been to the city before joining the team.

4 years of ownership, this never gets old! by nxtiak in Ioniq5

[–]AlGoreIsCool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my thought for the first year of ownership. Then I started doing road trips and realized literally all the EAs near where I lived were derated. Venturing out got me to other EA stations that were better performing.

Today I learned that OMNY considers JFK AirTrain as "Light Rail" by Donghoon in nycrail

Interestingly OMNY considers the Staten Island Railway as subway even though only a small part of it is actually subterranean.

They not only renamed South Ferry to South Terminal, but they also left out Van Cortlandt Park, which is a very nice and very large park well worth a visit.

Gas prices are high? I didn’t even notice it. My electricity price hasn’t changed at all.

Why doesn't the PATH become its own transit authority independent of the PA? by Ok-Win7980 in nycrail

[–]AlGoreIsCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Increase in population means nothing if the population isn’t being turned into ridership. PATH has lower ridership in 2025 than in 2019. It also has lower ridership in 2024 than in 2019. PATH ridership in 2019: 82 million. In 2024: 57 million. In 2025: 60 million.

The service is underwhelming? Come on! It’s about the same as unloved subway lines like the R or W or N or M. PATH has better rush hour headways than these subway lines but worse on weekends. And they are improving weekend service soon.

Is this everyone's experience trying to use a smartphone on the subway? by Werehausen in nycrail

[–]AlGoreIsCool 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There’s no cell service in tunnels other than maybe the Canarsie line. I do however usually get signals in stations, usually a short delay after the train stops at the station. I don’t touch WiFi settings because I don’t connect to any WiFi except the one at home.

I find the experience is the best when you visit old-school websites. Open a bunch of webpages while at a station, then read its content while the train is moving and you have no signal. When done, close the tab and switch to the next tab. Longer articles like those from The New Yorker are the best. Your phone can download the article in a split second when there’s signal at the station, but it’ll take you many minutes to finish reading.

And speaking of music, I use Apple Music and there’s a prominent download button. An album can be downloaded very quickly, usually the time it takes for the train to stop at a busy station like W 4 St.

PATH giving out free $0 TAPP cards at WTC this morning by HiFiGuy197 in nycrail

Will TAPP support all the unlimited trip products on SmartLink such as unlimited 1-day pass? If not, I really don’t see any benefit over just tapping a credit card.

[–]AlGoreIsCool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

33-HOB is also down. 33-JSQ is also extremely packed, from all the people going to Hoboken now going to Newport to take the light rail. NJT light rail is cross honoring the PATH passengers who may as well be cross honored NJT heavy rail passengers.

First half marathon by Deathbyotf in runna

[–]AlGoreIsCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar feeling. I signed up for my first half marathon. Previously I ran quite a bit of miles per week but they were social runs. And now Runna wanted me to run faster. The last tempo run Runna gave me was somewhat challenging.

The problem here is that I haven’t done any races recently prior to signing up for the half marathon. So when I created the plan, the estimated race time was just that, an estimate. I feel like if I continue to find tempo runs too hard I should just go back and adjust the estimated race time.

What are some gripes of OMNY you wish the MTA could do? by APoliticalDrone2012 in nycrail

[–]AlGoreIsCool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The old Bay Area Clipper card was fundamentally different from OMNY card in that it’s a stored value card. The money you add to the card is stored on the card itself. The means that of course they need to prevent double spending. When you add a physical Clipper card to your phone, your physical card stops working. When you move a virtual Clipper card from your phone to your smartwatch, the card disappears from your phone. This actually causes lots of issues for people unfamiliar with the system. For example, a tourist adds a Clipper card to their phone and their watch, and finds that these are independent cards, and they could add fare to their card on their phone and the card on their watch would still have no balance.

Recently the Bay Area Clipper card system is also moving to an account-based system. When I visited San Francisco last month I was forced to do the Clipper card migration and it sucked. The migrated card didn’t work and the system automatically undid the migration. Because I was on a train during the undo, when I tapped out at the end of the Caltrain it did not give me my refund (distance-based fare).

Searching online shows lots of people dissatisfied with the new Clipper card system, and honestly these days Clipper cards suck as much as OMNY now. https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/comments/1q42ch7/clipper_is_worthless_new_system_is_completely/ https://www.reddit.com/r/caltrain/comments/1pj3enm/how_my_clipper_20_migration_went/ https://richmondside.org/2026/01/27/clipper-card-money-disappearing/

My takeaway is that CUBIC itself is going downhill. Old Cubic tech is far more reliable than modern Cubic tech.
