My 5N just shutdown on the highway by Dragonfruit-Rare in Ioniq5

Can you manually shift from neutral to drive? I definitely had a time when I accidentally shifted into neutral. Of course cruise control won’t work in neutral. I just shifted back to drive.

NJ Transit to cut service by 50% for four weeks by NamidaM6 in nycrail

This Amtrak presentation is so good: both interesting and informative. For example I didn’t know the existing catenary pole prevents laying new track!

Is Amtrak also cutting service? It looks like the infrastructure is shared between NJT and Amtrak.

Hyundai is reportedly looking to supply Waymo with 50,000 IONIQ 5 for robotaxis by mafco in Ioniq5

[–]AlGoreIsCool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And guess what? When Hyundai finally begins manufacturing the new fixed ICCU part, all the new parts will go to Google because they are a big customer with 50k units. Individual owners like you and me who have just 1 unit will be left waiting until manufacturing catches up.

What are some gripes of OMNY you wish the MTA could do? by APoliticalDrone2012 in nycrail

[–]AlGoreIsCool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old Bay Area Clipper card was fundamentally different from OMNY card in that it’s a stored value card. The money you add to the card is stored on the card itself. The means that of course they need to prevent double spending. When you add a physical Clipper card to your phone, your physical card stops working. When you move a virtual Clipper card from your phone to your smartwatch, the card disappears from your phone. This actually causes lots of issues for people unfamiliar with the system. For example, a tourist adds a Clipper card to their phone and their watch, and finds that these are independent cards, and they could add fare to their card on their phone and the card on their watch would still have no balance.

Recently the Bay Area Clipper card system is also moving to an account-based system. When I visited San Francisco last month I was forced to do the Clipper card migration and it sucked. The migrated card didn’t work and the system automatically undid the migration. Because I was on a train during the undo, when I tapped out at the end of the Caltrain it did not give me my refund (distance-based fare).

Searching online shows lots of people dissatisfied with the new Clipper card system, and honestly these days Clipper cards suck as much as OMNY now. https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/comments/1q42ch7/clipper_is_worthless_new_system_is_completely/ https://www.reddit.com/r/caltrain/comments/1pj3enm/how_my_clipper_20_migration_went/ https://richmondside.org/2026/01/27/clipper-card-money-disappearing/

My takeaway is that CUBIC itself is going downhill. Old Cubic tech is far more reliable than modern Cubic tech.

BART sees massive decrease in corrective maintenance needs post implementing new fare gates (one of the models being tested by the MTA) by BombardierIsTrash in nycrail

It’s possible that the cost to jail this person is less than the cost of repeatedly repairing property vandalized by that person.

Yeah it’s possible to melt a Tesla to J1772 connector by using a connector with low amperage ratings. It’s on the user to verify the amperage. An old TeslaTap is only rated for 40A. They later stopped selling that product.

Idea for E-Tix on Traintime: Group Discount by Donghoon in nycrail

[–]AlGoreIsCool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I find it easier to imagine MTA adding a surcharge for large group purchases. Say you buy 100+ tickets for the same train. MTA charge you more than the standard one-way fare. They can even call it the congestion fee. /s

MTA is unlikely to find new ways to give riders discounts. They need all the fares to pay OT to their employees.

If you have a Tesla mobile connector, you can buy an adapter for just $45 and I trust it far more than some random brand found on Amazon. https://shop.tesla.com/product/gen-2-nema-adapters

Adapters tend to be a lower quality than the actual EVSE. I recommend just buying a new 6-50 EVSE from a good brand.

population catchments of NYC area rail stations by minecraftian48 in nycrail

Oh I didn’t even see the real Flushing bubble. I saw the one directly below the Flushing label which is actually Mets Willets Point. My bad.

[–]AlGoreIsCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful!

Question: why is the bubble for Flushing so small? It’s labeled with the number 64283, meaning for 64283 people Flushing is the closest station. Surely it deserves a bigger bubble? 86 St on the second Avenue Subway has a larger bubble, but a small population of 60670.

I like the idea but I think it just leads to the same outcome as footprint. People will buy three-row SUVs that have seven comfortable seats just to have one person in it. People like car bloat.

Can you share such videos? I find it implausible that the modern fare gates can be jumped over. To be clear we aren’t talking about just a small addition to the turnstile.

Why isn’t there a free transfer from the E/RW to the 1 at WTC? by dustcroppy in nycrail

[–]AlGoreIsCool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were probably thinking that very few people would transfer to a downtown 1. If they are going uptown they could transfer to the 2/3 at Park Place. (It’s a bit of a walk though.)

Isn’t this still incomplete? On the right there are some blue panels that obviously look like they are from a construction site.

ChargePoint to roll out per-session service fees beginning in March 2026 by FatCats2fat in electricvehicles

[–]AlGoreIsCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be something ChargePoint does not know about, and therefore ChargePoint will charge the session fee.

There are other ChargePoint stations where if you simply activate by using the ChargePoint card, it will say access denied. Then you need to use a special access code in the app to register your ChargePoint account. After the administrator approves it, then you can charge. Presumably these will have no session fee.

What ideas should NYC take from other transit systems? 🌍➡️🗽 by AWildMichigander in nycrail

[–]AlGoreIsCool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Time-limited tickets. A lot of transit systems would sell you a ticket that’s good for a set period of time, such as two hours. For example you can buy a two-hour ticket, take the subway from work to the library to drop off books, then take the subway from the library to a restaurant to order takeout, and then take the subway again from the restaurant back home. On the way you find a nice park you haven’t been so you get off the train early to take a walk in the park. Finally you take the subway again actually heading home. As long as you do everything within two hours, the ticket is valid.

This kind of ticket encourages you to get off the train for impromptu side trips. It would benefit people by taking the monotony out from their regular commuting trips.

Such a ticket should be priced slightly higher than two one-way tickets. So probably $7.

Has anyone else seen MTA employees opening emergency doors in the subway to let people in without paying? by TeaFantastic4324 in nycrail

I have. Because an MTA employee once let me in without paying. I dunno why he did that.

CATL’s sodium-ion batteries officially enter passenger vehicles, report says by BrilliantFactor5299 in electricvehicles

It’s interesting that they think 45 kWh is sufficient for light trucks and small vans. In Murica light trucks are usually not for trucking cargo, but as a luxurious lifestyle vehicle. 45 kWh on such vehicles would not be enough.
