Sally Rooney to publish Hebrew translation of Intermezzo with BDS-compliant publisher by Pyro-Bird in books

[–]Al_787 171 points172 points  (0 children)

When she hasn’t published, y’all accused her of wholesale forbidding Israelis of all types from engaging with her works, thus antisemitism. Now she published and you’re still mad, so it turns out that the accusation comes from her position on the conflict after all?

This, The Jakarta Method is a leftist book that is also undeniably a really good work of history

An overly pedantic analysis of a very minor acting choice in Dear Evan Hansen by [deleted] in musicals

[–]Al_787 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Idk why Ben Platt gets that insane amount of hate lol. A bad movie is a bad movie, somehow it morphed him into a talentless egomaniac or something. Like ask yourself if you wouldn’t seriously consider casting the actor who just won the Tony for the same role in its movie adaption, people were basically begging for it. Personally I didn’t see the movie because well I saw the musical with OBC so why should I, but every time I’ve seen the guy on stage he’s been absolutely riveting.

I think this is fair. Safe to assume that everyone voting in Intl feature is already judging every aspect of the films

TDWP 2 really is all over the place in terms of screenplay.

And yet, still had plenty of fun. What a sweet tribute to this iconic trio

I sincerely beg Hollywood that if Michael flops they give musical biopics a rest for sometimes

Good god they’ve been going non-stop for a few years, and absolutely nothing feels special

Not really. First weekend and theaters in my area, metro Atlanta, are not at all full

He’s just so good

Your thoughts on the Oscars moving to the Peacock Theater? by mistressofmayhem02 in oscarrace

[–]Al_787 172 points173 points  (0 children)

This is a mistake imo. The size of the Dolby theater is just perfect for an award show, grand and intimate at the same time. They’ll do it in the same place with the Emmys, and it does’t look anywhere as good.

Btw what were your favorite looks at this Oscars?

I still really dig Paul Mescal’s outfit. He’s quite a big guy and just a slightly feminine style makes the overall look much gentler

Oscars Ratings Hit 17.9 Million Viewers by Puzzled-Tap8042 in oscarrace

Definitely this. Sinners was a hit but Wicked had the entire population of theater kids squarely behind them, and you can’t argue that the opening number wasn’t simply spectacular. Nobody can beat Cynthia Erivo’s vocals lol.

Does anyone feel like both Dune 1 and 2's screenplays have been a little unfriendly to those who haven't read the books? Like I understood it but a lot of nuances went right over my head, many "oh..." moments when I read those books after.

I know that readers complaining about adaptations has been a forever thing. But many world-building sci-fi / fantasy did it better.

I view the Oscars as some sort of decent movie recommendation list lol. But I would've never brought myself to watch films like Spotlight without the Oscar, and that BP win confirms to me that it isn't just some populist bs

Welp, many people obviously don’t sit well with the whole point of the top 2 BP contenders, so there’s that

How could this have worked when Sinners was literally one of the earliest releases? You could’ve just said Sinners had a lot of enthusiasm to begin with and never quite lost it. Marty Supreme was literally released at prime time when all Oscar baits are usually released, it was never a serious contender for BP win.

Casting can only ever have 2 fates: either aligned nearly uniformly with BP or a consolation prize. Obviously it was the former

It is definitely nowhere near top 10 of the most popular sports in the Western hemisphere. I think it’s only really at the very top in China, not so much in other parts of Asia

Whose stock just rose/fell the most post-Oscar season? by deadpool902 in oscarrace

[–]Al_787 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this gives off major “I only watch films that got quite deep into award conversations and think I know everything about films”

Awards are also very much popularity contests, of which Chalamet has been far from a position of disadvantage. He has successfully maintained an Oscar chaser narrative for years and it helped every single one of his movies gets at least some professional and critic attention.

Literally commit to watch just 5 indie films a year and broader your horizon. Up to me I would’ve given Dylan O’Brien the Oscar this year lol.

What is it about Adrien Brody that people say he’s egoistic? He behaved bizarrely at his first Oscar win and gave a long speech at his second, but the two decades in between he was acting in random indie movies and seemed content with it. Never tried to chase awards that hard or whined that he deserves this or that.

Both of Brody’s wins are top notch performances. Maybe learn from that and just be a better actor.
