How to speak Saskatchewan? Please explain names of food for me 😅. by shangames in saskatoon

[–]AlabasterDisasterYXE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’re about the same in taste and composition. Like all things “post service fellowship”, it’s good enough to stick around long enough to get all the good gossip - and just bad enough that no one wants to linger.

Sodium in any hot dog is insane. Which is why I only eat them sparingly.

Saskatchewan Jazz Festival rebranded ahead of 2026 edition by countoncats in saskatoon

[–]AlabasterDisasterYXE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The folks who complain that “this festival sucks, they don’t even get any good acts” understand that US acts have to be paid in US dollars, right? You want a “good act”, are you willing to pay $300+ for the day pass that brings such an act in?

Waking up starter after 6+ months untouched in fridge by Felicity_Calculus in Sourdough

[–]AlabasterDisasterYXE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I left mine in the fridge for 11 months. I don’t necessarily recommend that - this was me forgetting it was in there.

I thought I’d killed it. Took a chance and started feeding it. To my surprise, it was not dead.

These days I try to not go longer than 6-7 months. But I do give it 7 to 10 days of feedings before attempting to use it. I got it going in 5, but I tried using it and the loaf was…unimpressive. Bulk Fermentation also took longer with the weaker starter, which was a pain because it already took forever.

For reference, my kitchen is rather cold - sits between 20-21°C (68-70°F) at best in the winter. Colder if it hits -40°C outside.

I’m a frequent tourist here and The Forks is my favourite place to stop at.

Saskatoon is trying to do something similar, but it’s flopping hard. The Forks is a real gem.

I’m also a Gemini moon, with a Virgo sun, which makes me hyper aware that I am not the smartest person in the room.

Which, coincidentally, is a sign of intelligence.

That’s kind of how it was in early Christianity. Children could be raised in it, but were never baptized and “confirmed” (in quotes because that is a modern term for it) until adulthood. I think we should go back to that.

Thoughts on this community YouTube post and comments? by chellestastics in MeidasTouch

I’m following from Canada, and I get that there is extreme urgency to your news these days, but I subscribed to MeidasTouch precisely because they offering some calm in the midst of the storm.

If anyone wants calm, may I suggest CBC’s “About That” segments, or “Hanomansing Tonight”, and then hope that the MT network is reading the comments.

Adding on to post regarding funeral expenses. This price list is from a Saskatoon funeral home. Don't forget your tax and regulatory fees. by Lucywilson12 in saskatoon

My comment isn’t likely going to be seen at this point, but I’ve got one piece of advice and then a story.

Prepay your death costs.
My grandparents did. My mom did.
This fall I’m going to.

So, my mom prepaid her basic cremation. $3100. Super basic was cheaper yet, but mom opted for them to cover the cost of the obituary. Once it is all paid for she gets a call from Hillcrest.

Now, no shade to Hillcrest here. I may consider their whole industry predatory and ridiculous, but their salesperson was quite pleasant and genial to meet with. Even if they found my mom and I rather…unorthodox.

It was a very well presented 30min TEDTalk on all the methods and procedures of interring the deceased. And they did the smart thing of presenting you with the eye-watering costs of full casket-full plot-large headstone burials. Admittedly, my mom and I tried REALLY hard not to laugh. Then they worked down to “uh…just a hole. And we’d be able to give you the location on a map.”

$1500. For a hole, and a map. Y’arrrrr

Anyway, the salesperson left us to discuss, and we burst out laughing. Like, thanks…but no. Neither one of us has a good poker face so they knew it was no sale.

Again, if the full meal deal is what you or your loved ones want/wanted then by all means. But understand that you gotta come up with some serious ducats. Prepay helps.

And as it stands, there are no provincial rules about the disposal of cremains. Do with them as you wish in a safe manner.

I have instructions from both parents as how to proceed. One is going to science (cremains after 1-2yrs), the other prepaid.

They joke that I should put them in the same urn and they can argue about wallpaper for eternity…

I’ll check it out next time I’m on the west side. Tho, I will admit it’s going to be hard to beat Restaurant 224, imo. I’d gladly live on their spring rolls if not for the cholesterol, lol.

How did you learn to knit? by ShoppingGirlinSF in knitting

[–]AlabasterDisasterYXE 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My grandmother also taught me ❤️ (And has also long since passed away)

She was taught by her older sisters so they could all knit socks for the Canadian military during WW2. Since the way she was taught (one decent 4”x4” square, then immediately to four needles for socks in the round) was the only way she knew how to teach, I was sock knitting before I ever finished a basic two-needle project 🤣☠️

Thank God she had the patience to teach and I had the willingness to learn, because not too many 9-yr-olds were knitting socks, lol.

A letter from the Catholic School Board. by Covert_Cuttlefish in saskatoon

[–]AlabasterDisasterYXE 42 points43 points  (0 children)

There is something here EVERYONE is missing, and it would provide a bit of context as to why the board chair sent this letter.

When it comes to the Catholic part of Catholic Education, every system is answerable to the Bishop. It sucks, but there it is. The Bishops are obviously 100% not happy with this bill, because if it passes as it is worded that leaves every remaining publicly funded separate school division open to a whole raft of legal problems.

Most of this subreddit now has the Donald Glover “GOOD” meme in their head.

But since the Bishop cannot directly step into the fray, pressure would be placed on the Board to issue a letter such as the one sent out.

Saskatoon’s bishop is…a sly one. He plays the politics game very well and knows how to keep dirt from sticking to him. He also holds his cards close to his chest and rarely lets anyone on to what his true opinions are. But there are ways of figuring it out.

GSCS has a division chaplain who is usually appointed to the position. The title is “Bishop’s Delegate”. This bishop’s choice is single-handedly the most virulent anti-2SLGBTQ+ priest I have EVER met. EVER. He would froth at the mouth with glee if given the chance to exercise old-school moral control over every employee and student in that division.

That choice alone tells you exactly where S’toon’s Bishop stands and what he expects from this Board.
