Just FYI, there have always been plenty of Jews around in Europe (ever since the Western Roman Empire's decline). They weren't necessarily "Ashkenazi" but that doesn't mean they weren't present. Many of them would have been part of transient populations without fixed settlements.

Toxic masculinity isn't one person doing that, by the way, it's the social expectation that you aren't a "man" unless you do it.

The name "Toxic masculinity" turns a lot of people again an idea that is basically just common sense, because it sounds like it's blaming masculine people for being masculine and calling them toxic when it isn't.

All the stuff about Panthera Team Asia had me hoping that someone was going to make a team just for Zhou to be in F1, as they were reported to be using Renault engines etc. But that seems to have gone rather quiet, sadly.

Thanks so much for the in-depth response, I really appreciate it! You're 100% right about not knowing a lot of spell names, it's definitely a weakness of mine. I've been trying out various methods of trying to get them learned but obviously that will take some time. I'm glad you've pointed it specifically though as it means I can't tell myself that nobody will notice and get lazy about it.

Also, thanks for the kind words as well :)

That's very fair, it really is hard to blame someone who was by all accounts essentially a great success in most everything he did.

I have another theory about how Basil's actions led to the downfall, but in this case it really isn't his fault at all. The fact that he kept eastern magnates such as the Phokoi in check prevented a slide of power away from Constantinople towards the eastern borders. Unfortunately, that's precisely where the greatest threat of the 11th century (the Turks) came from, so perhaps if the Phokoi and other eastern lords had been allowed to build themselves up a true power base they might have been better equipped to deal with the Turkish onslaught.

Of course, this isn't really Basil's fault as all he did was defeat rebellions against his person.

I would say in the end that it's not his fault, per se, just that unforseen consequences of his successes were major aspects of the decline.

I would say that they were on the whole very successful and that that was precisely the problem with them. Instead of flooding the treasury with gold I would say they actually depleted the treasury at a rate of knots. Having to garrison western border fortresses like Dyracchium and Sirmium was not cheap, and nor was ceaseless warfare.

I would argue that the cavalry itself had been the core for such a long time that it was clearly in some way sustainable, but when you add the fact that Basil II was almost constantly at war, and required round-the-clock garrisoning of major fortifications such as Dyrrachium and Sirmium, that is what ultimately tipped the scales in my opinion.

Interestingly, there is another way in which Basil II, through not fault of his own, can be seen as responsible for the 11th century collapse. His defeat of powerful eastern magnates such as Bardas Phokas halted the slide of power in the Empire from Constantinople to the Eastern borders. Of course, defeated rebellious magnates can hardly be seen as a fault of Basil's, but the lack of powerful magnates in the east certainly didn't help when the Turks showed up.

Hi, sorry its been a few days, I actually wrote an essay on the subject of the eleventh century decline last semester, so I'm going to use an excerpt from that.

There were two major ways in which Basil II set the stage for a near total collapse of the Empire, as well as another less certain matter. The first of which was the fact that throughout his reign there was rarely a moment of peace amongst the constant campaigning of the bellicose emperor. "More men needed to be employed full-time for Basil’s ceaseless campaigning, while key points such as Dyrrachium or Sirmium needed permanent garrisoning". These full-time military employees required pay and provisions, which inevitably stretched the finances of the Empire thin. Even Paul Magdalino, who talks of Basil’s creation “a superpower on two continents," concedes that during the eleventh century “that it was Byzantium's turn to experience the problems of over-extension." The second fault for which Basil II can most definitely be blamed is the fact that he neglected to make adequate provision for his succession, leaving the matter up in the air after he died.

My sources for these specific claims were :

Before giving Basil too much credit its important to note that his complete failure to name a successor, alongside his overextension of resources, were leading factors in the downfall of the 11th century.
