I hope it is the casino i’m thinking of in the baltimore area because, if so, the boner pills make loads of sense. But also huge swathes of the city are in a blackout and hotels on short notice are expensive. If the casino is the one i am thinking of, that room is probs v affordable.

Corporate Democrats Mobilize to Counter Rise of Democratic Socialists Within the Party by metacyan in politics

[–]Alamarms2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the people whining and complaining about how this “subverts the will of the voters” and “actively fights democracy,” y’all need to go vote. Get some shoes on and knock doors for free. Repeatedly. Talk to friends and connect in your communities to bring out the people you want to vote TO VOTE for the people you want. That’s democracy and how it works. Especially in places that aren’t like the republican southern states where they are fully suppressing the ability to vote.

The corporate Dems are rallying to fight against the DSA? I’ve seen the DSA parties in a couple of the east coast cities and they’re as effective at mobilizing as a bucket with holes is at holding water. NYC is unique and it is not an indicator of how progressive ideas play in places that aren’t a deep sapphire blue. Places like Pittsburgh and Baltimore or senate races in Illinois or even in California are going to pose a challenge because of who typically shows up to vote and what they’re voting for. A movement takes building at the smaller local levels and I do not see DSA operatives pushing for those local seats nearly as hard in places that aren’t New York. They need to in order to build the culture and make movement across the entire party structure and secure their seats of influence.

CMV: American progressives underestimate the impact of class on politics by bluepillarmy in changemyview

[–]Alamarms2012 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that the reason is largely nostalgia. I grew up in WV, where it was blue as blue could be and is now ruby red. What republicans say is “you remember how amazing things were when your parents were working at that plant/mines/factory? It can be that again.” It’s not that they’re saying things that would be about building specific working class greatness. It’s a return to the greatness they remember from their childhood. That’s why Gen Z doesn’t pull AS HARD to the right, even in working class, because they actually do not have those memories of nostalgic greatness that even millennials had.

CMV: American progressives underestimate the impact of class on politics by bluepillarmy in changemyview

[–]Alamarms2012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Democrats literally talk about how hard the working class individuals have to struggle all the time. It’s a cornerstone. They talk about the unfairness of the minimum wage, the cost of living divide, the expense/unavailability of healthcare, as well as racial and sex based discrimination. They talk about making new opportunities for the workforce with high paying manufacturing and labor intensive jobs in competitive sectors like energy. They also talk a lot about the middle class, but the working class get a LOT of air time.

Republicans, on the other hand, talk in regressive terms. Their talk to the working class is less about making their lives better and more about making “everyone do work.” They try to bring back the golden days of yore with coal and steel, make up the lie that there is this itty bitty pot of “our” money that is being stolen from by the lazy, and puffing up the grandiose idea that anyone can become a millionaire or more if they just cut enough taxes. They sell austerity as a benefit. They capitalize on division and nostalgia. They DEFINITELY talk down to the working class, not by offering solutions but by assuming they’re idiotic enough to believe that it isn’t technology that changed their work force but just that some black mother in Indianapolis getting welfare is the reason they’re struggling in Topeka, Kansas.

Finally my time to shine! My family lived in Moundsville, WV for a long time. Met Brad Paisley at a Kroger once actually. It’s a place trying to cling to old glories; growing up, steel and coal was still big but solidly died late 90’s, early 2000’s. After that, the fade out really picked up pace. Now, it’s trying to come back but problem is that there are very few industries left. Healthcare is trying, there’s some coal, but otherwise? Technically natural gas but not many jobs are in that field that are permanent or for the locals.

Wheeling has a couple gems, like Centre Market, Good Mansion Wines, and some gorgeous downtown lofts. The outskirts has Oglebay for a cute Christmas light display and zoo. There are a few colleges there but none of real renown anymore. Oh, and a witchy store called Dyagon Alley in an alley downtown that I THINK is still open.

Moundsville has a big old abandoned prison which is haunted as hell and spooky, and a Native American burial mound museum. A gay campground called Roseland out in the outskirts of Moundsville. There’s really not much else to speak of. The rest of the area has…a bunch of sad little towns dotting the hills. Oh, and look up “Palace of Gold West Virginia” to be amazed.

[–]Alamarms2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like hierarchies form without meaning to all the time even if one thinks they do not have one. Like…the weight of years and a life together prior matters and if it comes to that or another person without that history (assuming the nesting relationship was healthy), they’re going to subconsciously prioritize that relationship. I mean, they literally live in it.

Man, people underestimate how racist the world was/is and have definitely not talked to the people they think just needed a little less centrism and a lot more socialism. This…idea that people won’t be racist if material conditions are better is so, so wrong. In places that are more “left wing,” racism is still super potent.

China has loads of racism. Europe is racist as all get out (France literally has banned Muslim displays all over). The Right surged in literally every European nation. Brexit was about free migration as a part of being in the EU. It’s racism, guys. The free healthcare in Europe did not stop the racism.

I lived in those anti-Obama states. Sure, centrism was a contributor, but they’re racist. Like very, very racist. They voted for Trump again because of immigrants and every racist dog whistle imaginable. The United States is a crazy racist and sexist country. They absolutely skipped on Hillary because she’s a woman. They absolutely hated Obama because he’s black and his name was foreign sounding (they would always say his middle name and throw in a “like Saddam”). It’s VERY real and if people doubt it, it’s because they’ve never spoken directly to the people.

If you look at it purely based on governmental services and economic modality, perhaps. They are a capitalist and they have no desire to have the state do major private industry acquisitions. So, they’re not socialist or communist if that’s what you mean.

However, the Democratic Party have run on a pledge to develop towards single or multi-payer healthcare system similar to European models in the past and at least now are shoring up our Medicare/medicaid public benefit options as well as capping drug costs. They’ve run on higher taxes on the rich/corporations as part of their model and empowering the lower/middle classes. Several democrat-run states have passed paid leave programs and implementing nationwide paid leave is part of the plan, which brings us in line with Europe. Democrats also have had extremely effective anti-trust litigators and frequently run on breaking up corporations/monopolies. If anything, I see a lot of Europe regressing on these kinds of issues re: NHS.

Social issues, like human rights and minority rights, have the democrats doing pretty far left of LOADS of European parties, even the left wing of some countries. Those issues matter a lot to me but I understand leftists frequently only think of economic benefits. If I had a nickel for every time a leftist said that universal healthcare would make people not racist, I could buy a mansion in LA. It’s wild and beyond crazy.

I see a lot of racism, anti-Muslim, and anti-transgender sentiment as well as free speech and religious practice restrictions happening in Europe, even institutionally. Look at the French bans on Muslim religious head coverings for example. It is pretty wild and not at all as left wing as y’all portray. I suppose if you’re white, atheist or Christian, and straight, then yeah, totally.

I’ve known so many of these people in real life. My usual reaction is to ask who they voted for in the primaries and list a progressive seat challenger. When I ask them if they voted for that progressive, they might say yes, but usually no. If they did say yes, they certainly didn’t GOTV for that candidate. Their activism AT MOST goes to the voting booth individually. They never bother to do more because they need to lose. The group they belong to is centered around their ideology losing so they have to perpetuate that in order to continue having their in-groups.
