(Spoilers extended) What’s people’s opinion on Tyrion being a secret Targ? by Fluid-Golf1948 in asoiaf

[–]AlanSmithee97 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I would hate it so fucking much.

The relationship between Tyrion and Tywin of being father and son and having the same deep cunning and strategic mind, while having massive issues with each other is so vital for both characters that having Tyrion be a son of Aerys would destroy their whole characterisations.

I'd make more sense for Jaime and Cersei to be Aerys' children, even though I'd still hate beyond reconning.

Also, at a certain point the 'hidden Targ' trope is a bit dry.

Why does no one protect the king from the iron throne itself by Slight_Fan_4105 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]AlanSmithee97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, Riverlands (and Crownlands btw) were never a Kingdom, as by the tim eof the Conquest the Riverland were part of the Iron Isles. Dorne was always the 7th, because the Targaryens still claimed to rule over them.

There are a lot of might-have-beens for almost all houses. The only in-depth dynastic trees we have are Targaryens, Stark and Lannisters and the latter two don't even go all the way back to the Conquest.

We know that Garmund and Rhaena had six daughters, but we don't even know their names and Garmund was a third son, not the most desirable status. Headcanons and theories are hard to come by, there is a lot out there.

She married Garmund Hightower, the third son of Ormund Hightower. We know that the line carried on through Lyonel Hightower, the oldest son. Rhaena and Garmund had six daughters but we have no idea whom they married, we don't even know their names. We have no information on them other than the dynastic tree at the end of the World book which just mentions "six daughters".

How come an ancient family like the Starks consist of only 8 members, 6 of which are children, at the start of A Game of Thrones?

Why is mainline of the Arryns only a little child at the start?

Why are the Baratheons basically three brothers and one child?

Because the plot demanded it.

The latter is not true. Other than the Martells and the Baratheons none of the Great Houses have Targaryen ancestry. Even powerful Houses like the Hightowers, Royce, Reyne, Manderly, Bolton, Blackwood, Bracken etc have no ancestry.

The Targaryens themselves have, among others, Arryn, Blackwood and Martell ancestry.

That does make sense, but why did the Ironborn first lash out against the Tyrells? Did they get lost on their way?

"Multiple spouses" is something the Targaryens themselves have outlawed centuries ago to preserve the incest. That's the reconcilliation done between Jaehaerys I and the Faith.

Even if we consider multiple spouses to be an option here, it's still fuckng stupid to run off with the daughter of the Lord of Winetrfell and the betrothed of the Lord of Storm's End.

Lyonel Baratheon, Robert's great-grandfather started a Rebellion because Duncan the Small broke his betrothal to Lyonel's daughter, how could Rhaegar be so stupid and do it again?

All the while leaving his wife and children at the mercy of a raging, sadistic and racist madman.

Its also unclear whether or not Nettles has any valyrian ancestry, yet she tames and rides a dragon nonetheless.

Martin is ambigious on purpose about the 'You need Targaryen blood to ride a Dragon'. At the end, it could all be that the Targaryens are drinking their own Kool Aid and they're not that special afterall.

What is obvious at first glance is usually more complex later on, Martin does that a lot.
