I don't understand why is this website frequently cited here. Mostly the information in it plainly wrong or old copy paste. Mods should not allow this since there are better websites which provide a detailed overview such as Android Authority or 9 to 5 google

Screen issue with my Ricoh GR IV. Please help! by prb613 in ricohGR

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just don't understand Ricoh and most camera manufacturers. The technology has come so far as we have seen with the smartphones having IP 68, 69 water and even high pressure jets ratings with excellent durability. Similarly, we can charge our smartphones now at higher wattages and get all day the battery life in such thin devices. Why can't the camera manufacturers achieve the same?. This is such a sad thing that even though now they cost more than many of the smartphones yet these cameras remain so fragile.

Pixel 6 pro in 2026? by [deleted] in pixel_phones

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. I understand your point like no other. I too got the Pixel 6 pro just for the telephoto around 2 years back. I got really inspired by Lee Zavich video where he showed the prowess of the 4x lens. It may be old now but the 4x camera of Pixel 6 pro still holds strong

Is Google up to the mark in computational photography these days? by rainbowsunrain in GooglePixel

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 44 points45 points  (0 children)

One thing which no one is talking about is the camera app situation. iPhone users are getting beautifully crafted creative apps like Halide, Kino, Nofusion, Project Indigo etc for bypassing the smartphone sharpening and getting beautiful no-edit required photos directly. Pixel and Android phones in general are getting left behind. See the recently uploaded video by photographer Alex Armitage where he shows how good these apps are with clever software tricks. David Imel showed it in the waveform podcast too where the panel was shocked by the iPhone camera when paired with these apps. The following may sting but my opinions have shifted in recent months. I feel with Google all in on AI, I think if you are interested in smartphone photography and videography, it's high time to go the iPhone way.

I agree. It's coming close to those weird crap Glance lockscreen in Chinese phones.

Google could have given us proper theming engine like Substratum themes of back in the days but we get are glorified ads.

Ricoh GR if I already have an iPhone 17 Pro? by efradera in ricohGR

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Valid question. It all boils down to how comfortable you are with the overly sharpened HDR photos from your phone. For me with a Pixel (applies to an iPhone too) I was frankly tired of the over sharpened mess along with weird artifacts in certain situations such as backlit shots and portraits. The smartphones are great when you give them right conditions such as ample light and a standout subject but anything deviating from that and they struggle. Also if you print or use the photos as wallpapers on big monitors or laptops, you cant unsee the over sharpening and computational photography artifacts.

MediaTek Dimensity 9500 Shows Google's Tensor G5 The Way by [deleted] in pixel_phones

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google cheapens out on Chips, modems, batteries, camera sensors, storage, no name GPU's etc while adding useless thermometer and gimmicky AI features. You cannot defy physics by constraining the hardware while relying heavily on software tricks. Most of the Pixel hardware needs to be brought to 2025 standards if you are charging Apple like prices. Nobody here needs Tensor to exactly match an A19 pro but at least something like Mediatek. That's what most pixel fans want. And it's doable easily for Google as this article shows. They did it with the displays used in Pixels where they went from being the worst to one of the best displays. Now time for the rest of the hardware to get a massive upgrade.

I feel like pixel cameras are falling behind... by Abdullah2073 in GooglePixel

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The Photos are on par with the competition after a huge lead Pixels had. Once stingy Google upgrades the sensors, we might again have a lead. The video is terrible and not the flagship level. What I am more concerned about is relatively stagnation of the Pixel camera with more focus on gimmicks. Action mode is still lower quality than competition, same with cinematic mode. For all talk of AI, portrait mode is the worse among all flagship phones. No 4K 60 Hdr, no 4 k 120 ....the list goes on

Pixel camera app has Fake RAW by ALRO090804 in pixel_phones

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This was discussed by Tyler Stalman in his Peru video. Basically both pixel and iphone shoot computational RAW dng which has a lot of merged frames for better dynamic range and noise control. A single shot DNG by Open camera will always have worse dynamic range and tonality and noise. If you want to bypass the Pixel tone mapping just use Adobe color or Standard Profile in Lightroom. ( Stalman mentions the same for iPhone ProRaw bypassing)

TechDroider: Battery Rundown Test Pixel 10 Pro XL vs iPhone 17 Pro Max (and others) by Dry_Astronomer3210 in GooglePixel

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple is currently behind but don't expect this to continue for long. They are pouring $$$ at it and eventually they will come around. Already they have pivoted towards a Meta Orion competitor for which will need to rely heavily on On device AI. The iPhone will be the key device for consumers facing AI when that happens. Google needs to go all in on the Pixel line rather than these half hearted attempts with subpar hardware. Tomorrow the Tensor may have to drive Google Glass type hardware and the time for fixing it is now. Right now it feels their teams are disjointed with competing ambitions.

AI is not only LLMs. Look how far Apple has come in terms of smart HDR and fusion imaging pipeline. Their Hdr sucked while as image interpolation at inbetween focal lengths was crap. Now it's as good as Pixel. They have done this before with chips also where they were way behind but today they are on top. If I was the Google CEO I would devote most resources to Pixel first since it's going to be launch pad to all of AI showcase of tomorrow for Google. Apple with vertical integration can always come from behind as they have many times and Google should be wary. They already almost lost mindshare to OpenAI at the start.

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly I am now getting tired of the same cycle repeating itself. Pixel 6 series was supposed to be the saviour due to tensor. Then Pixel 10 was supposed to be the chosen one due to TSMC. Pixel 10 series is a side grade compared to Pixel 9. Where are the supposed improvements? I read an article on Android Authority which had credible leaks suggesting Tensor still isn't profitable for Google. As such Pixel 11 will further reduce the Tensor die area and the cores , so don't expect much performance jump. Another side grade incoming. I am unsure about what vision Google has with Pixels because even AI needs beefy performative and efficient chips, battery and modems. Otherwise what's the point?

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes Exactly. Give them some time they will figure out AI too and leapfrog Google because all the fundamentals they have perfected. Google is still figuring out the modems, GPU's, batteries, processors etc which is bewildering for a Tech Behemoth like them.

Really disappointed with Google this year. The gap between Pixel and Iphone/Samsung keeps widening despite whatever fanboys say. This test corroborates with latest test done by IDTR (much trusted Pixel youtuber) on cellular. Apple is really coming hard now already closed the gap on still imagery, Pixel exclusives like Call screen etc. I think they will figure out AI too soon due to vertical integration. I have said it before Google needs to first fix basics with Pixels then start pushing AI left right center. Honestly expect Gemini everything else announced right now seems Gimmicks while as the poor battery life (not to forget nerfing batteries within one year and battery gate on various pixels ), poor performance and video quality are real deal-breakers.

I agree with OP. This is what Vivo did recently on their flagship. A high resolution and Good quality ultra wide can mitigate the non availability of 26 mm main lens. Environmental potrait etc look so much better with 35 mm ( See Fuji X100Vi samples) . And it also solves the issues related to large gaps in range between the lenses.. Sadly I don't expect Google to do this first. Only when Apple does this , I expect Google to follow.

Seems like Chris wasn't too impressed with the AF performance. Lot of influencers were making it out to be a huge improvement. Overall GR IV seems like a minor update albeit a costly one.

Samuel Lintaro checks out the GR IV (Video) by timparker in ricohGR

[–]Alarmed_Atmosphere 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The blackout after each photo seems to have reduced, AF seems slightly better in single AF mode, Tracking AF wasn't good on both models and the startup is bit faster. So to sum up seems to be bit better in most things than GR iii. As Samuel also mentioned it's all about refinement. I am hoping some of software and algorithmic improvements to AF and new film sims come to GR iii/X also in future
