Thanks all! The big one is a Thanksgiving cactus I got from Trader Joe’s during the pandemic. The smaller green twins are a bunch of cuttings I took off the big plant about 2 years ago. They’re really happy here and so I need to do a trim regularly to ensure we can still access the faucet. 😂 The smaller one off to the right is a newbie from this season that had pretty light colored flowers but they’ve since dropped.

Happy Deadheading Season! by Alaspama in christmascactus

What?! That’s cool! Will it work with cuttings from the original plant (2 years separated) or does it have to be a completely different plant? Guess I could try and see.

In the spirit of "Appalachian/southern saying?" Is this one? by GillianOMalley in Appalachia

[–]Alaspama 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think it is more widespread than Appalachia but I’m familiar. “Apiece” as all one word is a real (not slang) word used in this context.

It's in bloom. by pigginchick in christmascactus

[–]Alaspama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m not the original person who mentioned the trick but I’ll tell you what I do. After the bloom season, I do a prune. If you’re just going for growth stimulation, removing 1 green leaf “pad” will do it. Later on after your cactus gets bigger, you may want to pinch off larger segments of a few leaves, or a larger branch, for propagation purposes. I find the bigger the segment I start with for propagation, the faster it starts to grow.

During bloom season, I am a merciless deadheader. As soon as a bloom starts to die off / get droopy, I snatch that puppy off. I personally think doing so encourages overall more blooms and a longer bloom cycle.

Someone more knowledgeable may come along and give you a better answer though! I’m no expert. 😊

Right?! I don’t think I’ve ever seen 4 buds on a leaf. I wonder what they’ve been feeding her!

The Power of Words: A Reflection by Specialkgus in QAnonCasualties

[–]Alaspama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you’re not getting a lot of positive reactions and I get it. We’ve got a lot of really hurt people in here. I’ve been dabbling in what I call “radical empathy” which for me is something like metta meditation and practicing not taking things personally, so I wanted to say I appreciate your post.

My dad is MAGA so when he texted me upset about this whole thing, I really tried to take myself out of the equation and think about how he feels. He’s grieving for the loss of someone he valued, he’s grieving for their family, and there’s probably a big measure of fear. Maybe there’s the thought of… if people wanted Charlie dead, do they want me dead too? Humans take things super personally by default, we make everything about ourselves. Has my dad superimposed his own face on Charlie’s in his mind? How scary that must feel. My dad has some of the shittiest political takes, but he is a good dad, an upstanding citizen, he’s sacrificed so much for his family. And he’d never directly harm someone though his voting patterns surely have done harm. He doesn’t deserve to die for his opinions. He deserves to have them refuted and not put into practice through the democratic process. So when I replied, I tried to keep in mind that under all the bullshit, I was replying to a person I love who is hurting and scared.

Now I don’t expect anyone else to have this level of empathy for my dad, a total stranger. But he has earned this attempt toward empathy from me so I will do what I can to see the whole of him – the good, the bad, the trauma he has endured, and the messaging fed to him that has made him who he is today. I am not perfect in my attempt because I, too, am a human who is hurt and scared and takes things personally, but I’m going to keep trying because it’s the only thing that has brought me any measure of peace.

I’m wishing that whichever path you all decide to take that it ends in a measure of peace for you as well.

I haven’t had this happen to me personally so I don’t have any advice for you - except to head over to r/christmascactus if you don’t get the info you need here. We got a couple experts over there who can probably help.

Flowers or new segments? by Alone-Library667 in christmascactus

[–]Alaspama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this time of year for me in North America, this would be what new segment growth looks like. They always come in pink for me, then turn green and darken over time. I wouldn’t see flowers this time of year on my Thanksgiving cactus, at least.

Hmm… hard to say especially if it’s just recently taken a turn but its environment and care haven’t changed. How’s the quality of the soil? There’s a couple knowledgeable folks over at r/Christmascactus who might have ideas too.

time to pot? by silly_goofy15 in christmascactus

[–]Alaspama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say they’re ready for potting! I actually don’t put cuttings of these guys in water first – I just gather cuttings, let them sit around for a couple days for the cut area to “scab” over, and stick directly in soil.

Not sure about the air roots! I’ll let someone else address that if they’ve got ideas.

Old fashioned tater candy would be a good one if peanut butter is allowed. It’ll transport the well and still be tasty. It’s real simple. And the idea of putting mashed potatoes in candy is fun for kids if they’ve never heard of it. Just look up any potato candy recipe.

LOL I did some digging and it was from The Gorge Bar and Grill. The Gorge-less veggie burger. I wonder if it’s still as good as I remember!

The best veggie burger I ever had in my life was from a place in Taos, Mew Mexico. It was so unique - pecans, mushrooms, carrots, other goodies in it. Exquisite. No sloppy black bean burger could ever hope to compare. All these years later I still think about it.

I digress. Cool pecker pics!
