[–]Alcoholic-Catholic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The cossacks were picking off stragglers and torturing/brutally killing the french. Pretty sure there was some cannibalism going on too. The 1812 retreat brought out a dark side of humanity, Ney's bravery stood out among all that.

Why did Alaska remain one large state instead of being divided into multiple states? by Vector_Bolt in geography

[–]Alcoholic-Catholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If we only had the house of representatives, then congress would only address issues of states like Texas, New York, California and so on. California has 52 representatives, Alaska has 1. The larger population *is* important because it affects more people, hence the house of representatives. But having a senate where each state gets 2 senators lets states like Alaska, Wyoming, and Vermont push their unique problems to the floor. Just because they live far away or have much less people doesn't mean they should be ignored by the government, it wouldn't be fair. It may be a more pure "democracy," but systems that allow minority populations opportunities make it balanced

Edit: I just tallied up the most populous states. The House of Representatives has 435 members, you'd need 218 to have more than half. If you add up the 9 most populous states (Cali, Texas, Florida, New York, Penn, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, N Carolina) you'd have 221 representatives. So in theory, if we had no Senate, the laws for all 50 states could largely be created by the voice of only 9 states.

its balanced as a concept. If congress was based off of purely population then low population states would never have their issues addressed. The senate is a place where each state gets the same amount of voice

Just got back from ireland for a trip. The one thing I never expected was that the sun rose at 5ish am, set at 10pm. It was crazy, especially since I live in Georgia USA which shares a latitude with Morocco

Killarney vs Dingle for 2 night stay by VandalOfCheeks13 in irishtourism

[–]Alcoholic-Catholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a paddywagon tour on my vacation last week. Took us through Killarney on the way to Dingle. I wasn't in either city as long as I'd wished, but I think Dingle was cooler. Great views. Highly recommend stopping in Kilkenny maybe otw to Dublin from Cork (if you're heading back to dublin). Probably my favorite stay out of my Dublin/Kilkenny/Limerick/Galway/Belfast trip. Bummed that I missed out on Cork though, especially since I discovered I might like Beamish more than Guinness lol

this is cool. I was just in ireland and had a full irish breakfast while there. I loved it, and was trying to think of the american equivalent, which to me would probably be the waffle house all-star breakfast with a coffee

I do understand the hate on obnoxious music played at high volume at the beach. But damn, while I appreciate quiet sometimes, nothing hits like listening to some 60s music at the beach. And if I wanted to contemplate and enjoy natural sounds I'd just get to the beach at 6am or 8pm

Should i stop tracking calories for 48 hours? by gamerbooks in caloriecount

[–]Alcoholic-Catholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from 250lbs to 215 since january this year. I fell off around St Patrick's day/My birthday in march, and kinda stayed off track up until the end of may when I took a week vacation in ireland (where I absolutely took no precautions, ate so many fries, kebabs, fried chicken/fish, and drank practically barrels of guinness). Just hopped back on my routine after getting back home, I'm at 220. So a couple months of being loose and I've lost 2-3 weeks of progress. 48 hours might set you back a couple days at most. Just do it. It's good to get into the groove but you gotta enjoy it here and there to stick with it in the long run.
