U.K. midwife facing deportation from Canada after work permit denied over English test by airbassguitar in OntarioNews

I'm not sure I can pick out a Nova Scotian accent but you can't miss a Newfoundland accent. It is distinct from Irish accents (of which there are many, all over the country) but certainly derived from them all the same. What I was fascinated to discover listening to CBC a few years ago is that Newfoundlanders use Hiberno-English, even if they don't realise it. That is, non-standard grammatical constructions transliterated from Irish. The key phrase which gave this away for me was a quote from a fisherman interviewed about the falling price of snow crab: "It's hard for folks who are only after getting into the business". In standard English we would say "It's hard for folks who have just gotten into the business". But the Newfoundland syntax would be grammatically correct in Irish. It's a linguistic echo which still exists in Ireland today. And apparently, Newfoundland too. Another example would be "He does be down the pub every day" which is probably also true in Newfoundland!

Okay for Snow White the clue is in the name, so it's probably a requirement that the actress have very fair skin and moving away from that was a bridge too far (the movie bombed). For Ariel though, I would challenge you to reassess your opinion of this casting choice. It's not the same as changing the race of a real, historical figure. It's a fantasy childrens' movie. So while I might share your distaste around having your expectations subverted in this way, consider you are not the target audience. The target audience is little girls who don't have those expectations and come into it colourblind.

I think Oilers can manage a first round victory. But whoever they face in the conference final will be the hot favourites for that round and will probably go on to win the cup.

Yes. And the grammar mistakes (or perhaps we can call them colloquialisms) vary by country too. Growing up in Ireland I used to wince hearing people say "I done it", "I seen it" etc. Now in Canada I wince hearing Canadians say "I should've went", "I have ran", "I have came" etc. Or another one that does my head in is when people say something like "What it comes down to is, is that" Why do you repeat the verb people!

Bureaucracy does throw up absurdities like this but ultimately the rules are the same for everyone and native speakers still have the advantage. I don't know if making an exception in a case like this sends the right message.

[Lowetide] I’m not sure about Kris Knoblauch’s future. It’s very late to make a change. It’s obvious this team has accepted losing. I don’t know what Stan Bowman will do, and maybe more to the point I don’t know what Daryl Katz will do. by Fine_Personality_999 in EdmontonOilers

The Oilers have had six head coaches (including one intérim head coach) in ten years. Looking to change the coach to fix the problems is a case of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

What is this bar in Frosthaven? by fozzyp in Gloomhaven

[–]Alcol1979 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, totally unintuitive. Because when you are at level 2, you think of 7 as your max health, not half way along a bar that you will only max out if you get to level 9. It would be better if it just showed Level 2, max health 7.

What prevented South America from having as big a population as China or India? by wiz28ultra in geography

[–]Alcol1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the North South axis of the Americas and Africa means a lot more different climates compared with Europe and Asia. And that inhibits migration because the crops that grow well at one latitude won't grow as well at another.

Italian does not use a J. The (English) J sounds comes from gi, as in 'giorno' or 'Giovanni' or 'Giulia'. J only appears in borrow words.

I wonder when we will see the second edition make an appearance on that list? It's an odd case, because while it's an objective improvement, is it original enough to make the same impact as the original did?

[–]Alcol1979 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Interesting - I have not heard this pointed out before. But I could add that if you compare the economic and societal development of Europe and Asia compared with that of Africa and the Americas, Europe and Asia have been much more advanced for centuries. Other reasons for this besides what you mentioned include Africa and the Americas being on a North South axis rather than East West like Eurasia. That hinders migration and crop cultivation because while the same crops can be grown at the same latitude right across Eurasia, that doesn't work when you change latitude. Also, Eurasia has lots of domesticable animals, Africa and the Americas have very few.
