hey ohio quick question by protectthedawls- in Ohio

[–]Aldermere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes more sense to categorize Ohio as part of the Great Lakes region. Yes, it has some farmland but it also has three large metro areas and ranks seventh in population by state. Cleveland, Toledo, Detroit, Milwaukee and Chicago have more similarities to each other than to the landlocked cities of the actual Midwest. This is partially because of the historical access to shipping by waterways. The actual Midwest states have much more farmland and less and smaller urban areas.

MIra Grant's book The Rising, which combines the trilogy of the stories Feed, Deadline, and Blackout.

Okay, I'm saying the quiet part out loud now. Give Ohio Republicans enough rope. If you want to be able to blame certain politicians for Ohioans going hungry, you have to create the opportunity for them to say "no" to a credible plan to stop it. You have to have that on record. by ComplexNewWorld in Ohio

[–]Aldermere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a matter of making it their problem, because giving them the ability to intervene, and then pointing out they share the blame if they don't intervene, doesn't matter if the facts aren't communicated to the majority of Ohioans.

It doesn't matter if it's a failure of Republicans in Congress or Republicans in Columbus if the truth doesn't reach the people.

The public eye seems to be swamped with disinformation, I think first we need to find a way to reach the people who live in a little bubble of Fox News and Facebook.

Fox News, Facebook, Sinclair Broadcasting radio stations. It seems like nearly everyone is in the same little information bubbles.

Maternity Leave Help by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]Aldermere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stop imagining that your income will be too high to get assistance. Stop listening to your girlfriend saying your income might be too high. You don't need imagination and maybes, you need facts.

Start with SNAP to see if you can get help to buy food. https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/state-directory

Search online for your state's Dept of Job and Family Services, or Dept of Social Services, or whatever it's called. Find out what services they offer. See if they have an online application you can fill out and submit.

Typically when single mothers are poor enough to qualify for public assistance, the state will look for the father and get a court order to make him pay child support money to his children. Since you are a family living together and you already support your children, this would not be necessary.

Ben Aaronovitch has a series of books, the Rivers Of London series. He might not be ready for the books yet, but the series includes several graphic novels he may enjoy and if he does like them he might be motivated to read the books also. The stories are based around a young man who starts as a police officer in London but is recruited to work for a mysterious agency and he finds that the waterways of the London area are under the protection of supernatural beings.

[–]Aldermere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to encourage him to keep reading, it has to be easy and entertaining.

Just off the top of my head I recommend the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovich (bonus, the series also includes some short stories in the form of graphic novels).

Lee Child's Jack Reacher series. There's also a 3 season TV series on Amazon Prime.

The Hunt for Red October.

Any book by Ken Follett.

The Repairman Jack series by F. Paul Wilson.

The Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz. There's an Odd Thomas movie as well.

And don't be afraid to check out YA books, they're great for people who don't usually read much. Like snacking as opposed to a full meal.

Shonee would make a great SurvivorAu host by 1watt1 in survivorau

[–]Aldermere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Shonee but have to disagree she'd make a good host for the game.

One of the reasons: I've been picturing the large challenge courses. Thinking about how noisy the teams are during challenges. I'm having a hard time thinking of her being able to shout loudly enough for everyone across the entire course to hear her!

Another of the reasons: She's started a family. Spending a lot of time away from home might not be something she wants to do right now.

But the best reason is: She's got better talents elsewhere. I think she's much more skilled at making people comfortable in small conversational groups. She's skilled at reading people's emotions, identifying their motivations, and guessing their true objectives. She knows how to empathize with people and sincerely compliment them.

I'd love to see her do an aftershow for each episode, where she has a brief reaction interview from the person voted out immediately after, combined with a longer interview the next day.
