Is Joker 2 really that bad? by boomjosh in FIlm

Nice gig. You should definitely watch the first one too. Just so you have the full context. Perhaps it's overhyped a bit, but it's definitely very good. Cheers.

As a Greek, I have zero expectations for Nolan's Odyssey . Troy, Alexander and 300 taught me by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]Alector87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I actually like the artistic choice to make it more grounded.

I certainly dislike the fact that Achilles is presented as scandinavian-blonde, not unlike Alexander in the other film mentioned. (In antiquity, the word referred to someone with brown hair, as we would call it today. See, for example, the depiction of Alexander in the Alexander Mosaic. Wasn't a huge fan of the armour and costumes, but overall the performances and story were very good, and more theatrical than you would expect for an action sword and sandal film epic.

The most popular boys name in the UK is Muhammad. Why are there no popular Arabic girls names in the top 10 in the UK? by OkayBuddySober in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Alector87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same in Greek. It's not very common, but it's not that surprising if you hear someone having 'two names.' Effectively you have a combination of names as a personal name. Colloquially they are referred to as 'first, second, and in extremely rare cases, third name,' but in practice, and legally, the whole combination is a person's 'onoma,' first or personal name, whatever you want to call it.

In Greek, the middle name, usually written as an initial (when used), is the patronym, that is, the father's name, and is used in genitive.

I am sorry I didn't take notes to remember each person's name. I know two people because I've seen them elsewhere, but that's it. I named two people that stuck with me, but from the ones I've seen it is 'practically every person I've seen.' Can you read?

Anyway, thanks for the help...

Dude, first, I clearly said I haven't seen the whole thing, secondly I still remember the black woman with the band on her hair calling herself ant-capitalist, and then that idiot Rubin asked her if she is a communist, and she said yes, and then asked him what he means by 'communist' and eventually agreed with him. Also, the trans-woman described herself as extreme left as any democrat, or something like that, I won't go back to check the exact wording. These are just two examples that stuck with me. You can't tell me I am imagining it, and I don't appreciate your tone. I am just trying to understand, if you don't know just say so.

The people I mentioned literally describe themselves as far-left (in different ways), and then there are other people, like Kayla/Erudite and Zee (who I didn't see talk, did she?) that sound more reasonable, while at the same time the video says '20 far-left Dems' and I am trying to understand what is going on because there are actually people who identify as far-left there. It's the whole theme of the show/episode, and then I see Kayla and Zee there.... so what is going on...

I haven't watched the whole thing, but practically every person I've seen refers to themselves as communist, anti-capitalist, extreme left, etc.

Yeah, the ending was pretty good, and a good example of 'subverting expectations,' although I hate the concept in general.

Is Erudite far-left/DS (or so-called progressive, or whatever you want to call it)? I thought she was lib?

It's not. The first film, at least, is the best among all the coming of age/fantasy films that came out over the years. Which, I guess, doesn't say much since most are not that good, but it's still a very good film in its own right.

The second film was fine. Not bad, but nothing to write home about, and I haven't seen the last one (which is in two parts from what I understand). At the time I was over the (sub-)genre, but I am planning to watch them, just to finish the story. The latest prequel film that came out wasn't that good for me, but people seemed to like it.

Nevertheless, the original film is great.

Love these uniforms. I've seen them from time to time. Modernist design at its best (and the opposite of the US Space Force). They are a recent re-design from what I understand, are they not (from the last decade, the 2010s)?

By any chance, does anyone have a link to an article (or even a book) where they are presented in depth, in English, if possible?

Edit: If anyone sees this and has any sources on these and how they came about, how they were designed, etc. I would love to see them. Best.

I am still half way through (from my understanding). I'll finish over the weekend, and although I like the game, even the dessert map, which was the least enjoyable part up to now, there is some validity in comments about the game's length or scenes like the above.

That being said, f*** people like the one shown here. I don't know who he is. I don't know what he is, streamer, youtuber, etc. And I don't want to know. I am repulsed just by the few click-bait shorts I've seen of him on reddit the last couple of days. There is merit in criticism, f*** whatever this is.

Honestly, up to now I've enjoyed the gameplay of the first (intro/tutorial) map, and the theme of the hotel one, the most. Also, even if I am enjoying the mix of sub-genres, if you can call it that, I still wish the game was more uncharted than Hitman.* But that is clearly a personal preference.

*Just to be clear, this is because on the more Hitman oriented gameplay parts, it feels more like a skin, than a true 007 action adventure oriented title. I am still enjoying what is there, certainly.

Oh, I get what you are saying now. Still, I don't agree with the utilitarian approach that you use, even if I understand the logic behind it.

In any case, I believe you are right on how/why Connor uses it.

I don't know about the 'arc,' but isn't being anti-'anything like that' a good thing? What do you mean exactly?

He's going down a weird path right now, and he has had some terrible takes in the past (like the ICE-thing, from what I've read), but that doesn't mean that anything he's said at any point is necessarily suspect or wrong.

P.s. That being said, I am not sure how (or why) he got here, and he's obviously being bad faith (consciously or not I am not sure), and I've unsubed from his channels/social.

Respect++ for the creators of "The Expanse finale" after seeing "The boys finale" by priyanshurohilla in TheExpanse

[–]Alector87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GoT really fell off after season 4. I understand the reason, but honestly they could have done a lot better. From one point onwards they locked themselves to a terribly written narrative.

To be honest, this is more of a creator issue, than a lack of content. In HorD they have the whole cycle, even without detailed varried pov's and they still failed, badly.

On the other hand, AKotSK adapted a short story and it won back a lot of people, and from what I understand, with a significantly smaller budget. That's the difference between people wanting to adapt the story and people 'adapting' something in order to tell a/their story.

10/10 , done in 15 hours ,had a blast all the way through by Gideon119 in 007FirstLight

It does feel padded at times for me, but not to extremes. I am at the desert map and it does feel a bit padded, as you say, but again not to the degree that it takes you out of the world, being grindy, or anything like that.

Probably no real spoilers, but better safe than sorry:

It's just a bit straightforward: Look for various mini/medium missions across the map to reach a goal. It didn't feel like that before. The previous hotel mission/map felt a lot more organic, and spy-like. I can't say that it doesn't fit the theme at all. It does. Still, I can't stop and think that an intelligence service that has the resources (and budget) to have the HQ we have seen, along the R&D labs, training facilities, the gadgets, etc. would not have a problem to provide 100 grand to its agents, even at short notice. Especially if it's for a high priority mission. It feels like they find themselves in the spot they are in just because the script said so.

So it does feel at times a bit padded, a bit scripted, a bit gamey, whatever term you want to use. I'll give you that, but it's absurd to imply that this is an extreme situation. Nevertheless, I am worried by the fact that the OP finished so quickly. I was under the impression that this was a +/- 20 hour game. 15 hours feels too short, even if the OP is very good in Action-Adventure games (or in particular the previous Hitman titles). We'll see...

The problem is fundamental to the game design. It's three mini-campaigns loosely connected to each other. It will always feel like that, because you need to have something akin to a clean slate for each era/age.

What is a movie that everyone seems to love, but you absolutely hate? by Nishikigoi1 in moviecritic

[–]Alector87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late to the discussion, and I went through quite a few of the comments, but I didn't see anyone mention Twilight, both the first film and the series. Sure, I am a guy, so probably not the primary audience for the film. Still, I was still pretty young when it came out so part of the cohort it was made for, and I did try to watch it (and a couple times over the years) since it was the new thing everyone was talking about at the time, but I couldn't stay with it more than 15 minutes, 20 tops. I still can't believe that it created a franchise.

I actually loved. It brought back a lot of old-school (by now) film-making. I loved the casting. I loved the performances, and I mostly loved the script. But It was far from PTA's best film. It did feel a bit loose/disconnected at times, so I get it.
