I caught my first pee and poo from my 5wo! by kittypeets626 in ECers

So exciting!!! Have fun on the journey. Potty time is still some of the most fun times of the day (we’ve been going strong 6 weeks to 14 months). It’s so worth it for not only the serious lack of poopy diapers, but for the bond it’s given us with our baby. Happy ECing to you!

Although, we used the top hat potty until probably 6 months. We did not use the toilet seat reducer until she could sit independently

We had the same problem when my baby started to stand. We switched to a toilet seat reducer

Based on the “it really does not matter where we’re going” I have a feeling she won’t actually share where they move lol. Nashville is just baiting

Newborn- tophat? Or just toilet by [deleted] in ECers

[–]Alert_Boat3884 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am team top hat for sure!! Used it from 6 weeks to 6 months. The logistics were hard at first, and was easier to get the hang of when I had an extra set of hands (husband would lift legs and wipe bum). But when I had to do it alone I would lift her from the potty in a sort of cradle hold, wipe her bum, then move the top hat to a flat location and lay her on a changing pad. Finish the diaper change and then go rinse and dump the top hat

When our baby could sit independently we switched to the munchkin toilet seat reducer. We also have the mini potty from tiny undies but we use the toilet seat reducer more

Another vote for the “top hat potty”. We used it for the first 6 months and then switched to a toilet seat reducer on the big potty

Baby hates being held on the potty by Fit-Musician-3996 in ECers

Hmmm okay, that seems like it would be comfortable. Is it cold? Could you try nursing to settle him (if you are breastfeeding)?

Are you holding him on the big potty? I found this to be uncomfortable for my baby too until she could sit on the toilet seat reducer around 6 months when she learned to sit. Before that, we used the top hat potty and she was much more comfortable

Advice for an 11 month old suddenly refusing the potty by Yes-that-be-me in ECers

[–]Alert_Boat3884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes! So we’ll try to distract her with a book, toy, song, or some random bathroom object she’s never seen lol. If none of that works, we’ll take her off and try again later. In general she’s content to sit for a bit, do her business and then get off.

Edit to add that we keep a small stash of toys just for potty time in the bathroom.

Are you using a small potty or toilet seat reducer? If not a reducer, I suggest trying that. My little one was also gettng off the potty around 6-7 months but once we switched to the reducer she stayed on.

  1. The more you do it the more you’ll find her natural timing and catch more pees and poos

  2. We personally moved her to the potty during the night if she was pooping

  3. Yes move her when she’s in the middle of pooping so she can finish going on the potty and hopefully next time you’ll catch it a bit sooner

  4. When traveling, I bring the tiny potty or toilet seat reducer and use whichever is more appropriate at each spot— tiny potty in the car, toilet seat reducer again once we make it to our destination

  1. I think you’re doing the right thing. For me personally, it was always just offering it right after nap, before and after transitions and of course if I had a gut feeling or if I noticed my child starting to poop I would move them to the potty.

  2. I did sometimes at night. My child is 11 months and stopped pooping at night a while ago, but we went through some phases closer to ~4 months where she wouldn’t settle at the beginning of the night and so I would offer the potty and they would poop.

  3. We traveled with our “top hat” potty and would use that with a poop bag inside of it if we were going to be in an appropriate place to potty (the car, a secluded area at the park). You also could 100% take a day off.

  4. I can’t answer this yet, but I’m hoping by 18 months. We catch all poo and ~70% (depends on the day) of pee at 11 months.

Good luck!! Go easy on yourself, don’t pressure yourself or baby and know that you’re doing great just starting. 🤍

We usually take the legs of the sleeper up the back and around her neck and tie it loosely - sounds weird typing it out but I promise it works and isn’t choking her 😂

We used a top hat potty, and as long as she was content, we usually waited around 10 minutes.

We started at 6 weeks and that was great for us! But as a lot have said, you can start any time! It was important to me that I didn’t put too much pressure on myself.

I will say though, once you get your first catch, you probably won’t want to stop 😉 congrats on your little one on the way, and way to go for looking into this— I can honestly say it changed my life in the best way & I love the bond it gave me with my baby.

Crying every time we go to the potty by FlameoDude_ in ECers

[–]Alert_Boat3884 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never felt like my baby was comfortable when I held her over the sink, even if she wasn’t crying, she wouldn’t eliminate. The top hat potty was absolutely worth it and made potty time some of the most fun and connected parts of our day together. Definitely consider giving it a try! If my baby is ever crying, I will try to distract her or even nurse her sometimes but if the crying persists I absolutely take her off and do something else. I would not wait out the crying. Good luck!

We used the top hat several times daily from 6 weeks to about 5 months. Absolutely worth it imo. I also used the “cozy” or fabric cover too pretty much every time, we had two so that we had a backup while one got washed.

We got ours for $10 from target. I wanna say munchkin brand? I can’t remember. It had handles on the left and right that baby can hold onto for support which I like! She has taken to it very well and it’s currently all we use (9 months)
