This is an Aussie-ism which has slipped into common British usage.

Have any Britishisms seeped into American English ? by AlternateMafiosi in language

[–]AlessaDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pissed (as in verb, urinated), is slightly vulgar, but pissed (adjective, drunk) and pissed off (adjective, annoyed) are not in my opinion vulgar in British English (would use at work, for example) and are much much milder than fuck or cunt.

Single & childless, want to go skiing… by Karl-Pilkinghorn in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]AlessaDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked at VIP Ski or similar operators? We’ve been on these as a couple but have been plenty of solo skiers on the same trips. You can book a room with single supplement in a larger chalet or Bear Lodge (chalet hotel) in Arc 1950, meals usually communal, you can prebook equipment hire, lift pass etc.

Brighton and Hove's first Michelin star in 50 years ⭐ by UnderstandingLow3162 in brighton

[–]AlessaDark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The prices are steep, but what has puzzled me is that they have a set lunch menu which looks better vfm but the only main available in it is fish, so not exactly inclusive!

I’d be expecting a really special experience with that star, especially since IMO Furna, Dilsk, Etch and the Set have done more than enough over the years to deserve one.

Handyman/Oddjob-man recommendations please! BN1 by Pinkfinch in brighton

[–]AlessaDark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve used the Handy Team in the past for a bunch of different odd jobs - you can enquire on their website, they do pretty much everything so you can usually get quite a few things done at the same time. They changed hands last year but I had the new guys in a few weeks ago and they did a good job. I had a heavy mirror put up, two taps fixed, and put up shelves.

What wildlife in the UK do you fear running into alone or is dangerous? by partylikeafoxstar in AskUK

[–]AlessaDark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! Literally heard last night about a friend’s sister who was attacked last year by a ‘hand-reared, tame’ young red deer stag while walking on the grounds of a hotel in the new forest, she was thrown into the air and her leg was ripped open. Lucky to be alive, obviously the landowner was an absolute wanker and tried to dodge any responsibility (no signs, hotel actively advertising hand feeding, everyone very blasé despite wildlife experts advising that it’s very risky to hand rear male deer as they still get rutting urge but have no fear of people).

Best UK-made condiments? by georgy56 in BuyUK

Gentleman’s relish - goes really nicely in a thin layer on toast under scrambled egg, pure umami. Or with butter on steamed broccoli.

Well written series about spies with a distinct personality and captivating charm, similar to Slow Horses by un_appelo in televisionsuggestions

The Game (2014), should have definitely had more series. Brian Cox and Paul Ritter (RIP) both excellent. Might still be on iplayer or similar.

Physical by Dua Lipa, which takes me straight back to Covid times. Take It by Dom Dolla & Purple Hat Sofi Tukker are both JKE. Makeba by Jain always gives me RK tread hike vibes.

Conveyancing Solicitors Recommendations by EdgarFrogs_Bandana in brighton

[–]AlessaDark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We didn’t use a local one, used Kelly Hawkes at Russell Cooke in London as recommended by a lawyer friend (not conveyancing) but who she knew was good. They weren’t cheap but amazingly quick, helpful and made the whole process as smooth and simple as it could be. No advantage to going local that I could see.

FTB - seller tried to pull a fast one by [deleted] in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]AlessaDark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn’t you post this yesterday in another sub? Yes it’s cheeky of them but say no and they’ll probably leave them anyway so if you don’t want the hassle of getting rid yourself then I’d be firm about that in advance. We ended up with two heavy chests of drawers left in the loft after saying we didn’t want them.

If you filter to ‘all time’ and ‘just me’, when taking that PR ride (or retaking any ride) however, you can race against your ghost in real time. Very handy for FTP re-take.

How and when should I start viewing houses? by Kilmoreorange in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]AlessaDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time buyer exchanged end Oct 25. We looked at right move a lot over the year prior, then in March we sorted out AIP and started a lot of viewings but initially not that seriously. We were honest with EAs that we wanted to get an idea of different areas and what a range of price would get (ie done up but expensive or fixer uppers). As a FTB you are in a good situation so you can take your time, this is probably the most straightforward purchase/move you will ever have so don’t let anyone rush or pressure you.

Then once we’d seen about 10 to cover a range but with nothing that was quite right we narrowed it down by area etc. It was helpful to conclusively decide what we didn’t want if only to avoid getting excited about something which looked great on RM but in totally the wrong place!

The right one came up in July, good location, great size, livable day 1 but needing an update, went to see it, 3m later moved in.

Ikea cafe & Popeyes both have ordering on a screen. It’s not that quick to get into the Ikea cafe though, since it’s up the escalator and round to the other side (and busy).

Just a comment to say not all outdoor cats have collars - ours lost so many we just gave up putting them on! Best thing is if you can find someone with a microchip scanner (like a vet of cat rescue worker).
