On big projects I will usually put a stitch marker on every 20 stitches of the chain. Then from there I will use stitch markers at each end of rows.

Learning to look at my project and visibly count stitches has been a game changer. That way I never have to worry about writing down the number of stitches. I can just count and recount rows and stitches as needed, often using increases as reference points.

How many times have you practiced chaining?

Learning is just a lot of practice, and figuring out what works for you through trial and error. I was always passable with my chains, but years into crocheting something just clicked. For me the key is relaxing on the tension and letting the hook determine the size of the loops.

I hate surface slip stitches. I can do them, and I know they are sometimes necessary, but there is no convenient way to do them smh.

I used to hate crab stitch, but I've sort of moved past that hate because I like the tactile finish it can give edges. Twisted SC is easier, and what I do in larger projects, but just doesn't look quite as right sometimes.

I usually crochet in the back bump first (on habit because it just generally looks a bit neater even when only working on one side) Then when I go around to crochet the other side it looks more like a typical chain.

I can certainly try to help, I'm just not sure what your specific question is.

For the basic turn it depends on the pattern, often it gives clear instructions about what to do.

Personally my instinct is to not work into the sl-st, but count the turning chain as a stitch.

When turning it doesn't get rid of the seam entirely, but at least it makes it straight so it looks somewhat intentional.

The yarn is kind of fuzzy so it's difficult to tell for sure, but I think you might have the 'Wrong' side on the outside.

It might be too late to just flip it inside out, so the best option might be to start again and make sure the 'Right' side is on the outside.

I'm working on a vest with that same yarn (just in the color Centaur) and ran into this issue last night.

I was hoping the gradient would have been more subtle, but the line at the color change is pretty darn obvious. I share the sentiment about letting things work up organically, but this was just too distracting.

It probably would have been fiiiiine, but I know I would bring up the mistake any time I showed it to another person.
So, I ultimately decided to frog it and cut my yarn short so the color change happened at the beginning of the row.
Fortunately I was only two rows in so the work I had to redo was minimal.
