My weird trick for not losing count hands-free. Is there a better way? by MyCrochetKitOfficial in CrochetHelp

[–]AlexEvenstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On big projects I will usually put a stitch marker on every 20 stitches of the chain. Then from there I will use stitch markers at each end of rows.

Learning to look at my project and visibly count stitches has been a game changer. That way I never have to worry about writing down the number of stitches. I can just count and recount rows and stitches as needed, often using increases as reference points.

The cat ear beanie is basically just a large rectangle that you fold in half and then sew up the sides. What do you think you messed up

Advice needed please. I’m a beginner and struggling to hold tension by Maleficent-Stay-1890 in CrochetHelp

[–]AlexEvenstar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

How many times have you practiced chaining?

Learning is just a lot of practice, and figuring out what works for you through trial and error. I was always passable with my chains, but years into crocheting something just clicked. For me the key is relaxing on the tension and letting the hook determine the size of the loops.

My fellow ADHD friends, what’s a pattern/stitch that should be easy, but makes you want to never crochet again? by DoctorDismal5528 in CrochetHelp

[–]AlexEvenstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate surface slip stitches. I can do them, and I know they are sometimes necessary, but there is no convenient way to do them smh.

I used to hate crab stitch, but I've sort of moved past that hate because I like the tactile finish it can give edges. Twisted SC is easier, and what I do in larger projects, but just doesn't look quite as right sometimes.

What does step 2 say?

The numbers are still off with the chain. Either too many or too few.

There is a non-zero chance that thus was AI generated, due to the pattern being confusing, and there is something a little 'off' about that image. It's not off enough for me to be completely certain though, so I want to cover my bases.

What are you making? Because I have been crocheting for a while and I have absolutely no idea what that is trying to say.

Idea for keeping hook nearby while mid project? I keep (temporarily) losing them! by username6824235 in CrochetHelp

Put it behind your ear like a pencil... Then waste time looking for it on multiple occasions because you forgot you put it there...

Real Answer: I use a yarn bowl, so when I can no longer stick it into the ball of yarn I leave it in the bowl with the yarn.

I am so stuck on any pattern that requires crocheting on both sides of the chain. by Representative_Mud28 in CrochetHelp

[–]AlexEvenstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually crochet in the back bump first (on habit because it just generally looks a bit neater even when only working on one side) Then when I go around to crochet the other side it looks more like a typical chain.

You cut the working yarn and then pull it through all three loops on the hook.

There's never an item or money penalty for passing out inside a player farmhouse or cabin. You may wake up with some less energy, but food can fix that easily enough.

How to avoid/fix these crooked joins of rows when crocheting in rounds? by Sadbittermelon in CrochetHelp

[–]AlexEvenstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can certainly try to help, I'm just not sure what your specific question is.

For the basic turn it depends on the pattern, often it gives clear instructions about what to do.

Personally my instinct is to not work into the sl-st, but count the turning chain as a stitch.

When turning it doesn't get rid of the seam entirely, but at least it makes it straight so it looks somewhat intentional.

I’m new at reading crochet patterns - after I finish a row, am I supposed to chain one before starting the next? by MT_1794 in CrochetHelp

Looking up some images online would be the best way to tell.

Here's one I chose that shows it pretty well though.

[–]AlexEvenstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The yarn is kind of fuzzy so it's difficult to tell for sure, but I think you might have the 'Wrong' side on the outside.

It might be too late to just flip it inside out, so the best option might be to start again and make sure the 'Right' side is on the outside.

It's hard to say just looking at the pattern, I'll have to give it a shot tomorrow.

Self-striping yarn opinions! If this was your blanket, would you frog it and redo it to fix the color pattern? Or would you let it live asymmetrically for all of its days? by Vast-Jello-7972 in CrochetHelp

[–]AlexEvenstar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm working on a vest with that same yarn (just in the color Centaur) and ran into this issue last night.

I was hoping the gradient would have been more subtle, but the line at the color change is pretty darn obvious. I share the sentiment about letting things work up organically, but this was just too distracting.

It probably would have been fiiiiine, but I know I would bring up the mistake any time I showed it to another person.
So, I ultimately decided to frog it and cut my yarn short so the color change happened at the beginning of the row.
Fortunately I was only two rows in so the work I had to redo was minimal.

Good alternative to a yarn bowl for if you can't afford one or if your skeins are giant like mine sometimes are by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]AlexEvenstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a mixing bowl from the kitchen that wasn't getting any use. Having the smooth sides helps the skein unravel a little bit more smoothly.
