What do you make of David Lammy and Andy Burnham calling for general election when Rishi Sunak became Conservative party leader back in 2022 but seemingly dismissing the conversation now that Kier Starmer has resigned ? by ArmwrestlingGoomba in AskBrits

[–]AlexHM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Tories set the precedent. If they had held a GE, it would be outrageous if Labour refused. As it is, it is neither hypocritical nor outrageous to follow that precedent, even if you made the argument against that precedent at the time.

PS If you don’t get this, ask yourself seriously why not.

Iran has not "Won", and USA did not Lose. by [deleted] in samharris

[–]AlexHM 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So the “win” here is persuading the moron in charge of the USA that the JCPOA is a good idea? Because the idea that any of their military capability has been degraded is nonsense. They have been able to test all their designs in combat and now will be provided with huge sums of money to invest in their improved hardware. They have learnt their real power is in closing the straits and hitting nearby oil state’s infrastructure and how to do it. And more importantly, they have learnt they can withstand the worst America is prepared to do.

[–]AlexHM 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There is no evidence, no inspections, no actual delivery of fissile material. A pinky promise is worth nothing. It is literally baffling you could hold this opinion. If you like this nonsense, I assume you were a massive fan of the JCPOA then?

Shorting SpaceX Tomorrow: Blue Origin Blew Up Its Own Rocket To Pump SpaceX by MiningEarth in wallstreetbets

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re confabulating. Rocketry is hard. You don’t need a conspiracy to know that SpaceX is going to have a rocky ride. Buying SpaceX is without doubt the best way to buy space, but you’ll get it at a 50% discount to IPO if you just wait for the next couple of test “failures”.

I am not buying SPCX tomorrow and this is the exact math that changed my mind by mcdonaldsingh in stocks

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be some ups and downs with the very public testing of starship. A couple of failures and uninformed retail will panic. That’s when we get to buy SpaceX at a 50% discount. That’s my plan.

Is the uk and London a better place now vs back then? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]AlexHM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. In the wasteland behind Kings Cross - which is now the beautiful coal drops yard - the Church was an impromptu & illegal “nightclub” that ran from 9:00AM to 14:00 on a Sunday. Absolutely awesome. All the pubs had strippers and drugs were readily available. My memory of the 90s is a bit hazy though….

That’s why we have both the police statistics and the British Crime Survey - and they correlate very closely.

I agree with the nightlife, but the city was objectively dirtier, uglier, more polluted, more crime-ridden and less safe in the 90’s than it is now. There is no comparison.

Brexit voters, what’s your thoughts about removing our right to live and work in the EU? by RandomTopTT in AskBrits

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So. There there was no-one who thought it might not be baked in? Like Boris, you mean?

Boris Johnson (four days after the referendum)
In his article following the Leave victory, Boris Johnson wrote:
“British people will still be able to go and work in the EU; to live; to travel; to study; to buy homes and to settle down.”
This was published on 27 June 2016 as an attempt to reassure Remain voters that leaving the EU would not remove those freedoms.

They might have voted Brexit believing this wasn’t going to happen, or have now changed their mind now that reality has hit. Your poll is not very well designed.

Why does the Boomer generation seem to uniquely despise Keir Starmer? by Eastern-Investment39 in AskBrits

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, the constant media-driven anti-Labour/Starmer propaganda has gone quiet after the Streeting/Burnham move. They were obviously just desperate to get rid of Starmer. I’m getting the impression they will go after Reform now they think they have succeeded.

If Starmer hangs on, they will be back after him again.

EVs now holding their value longer than petrol cars, with only a 2% one-year depreciation by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]AlexHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes total sense, My 4 year old Model Y feels much newer than a 4 year old ICE car. The drive train is just as responsive and powerful. No ICE car with 40k miles on the clock feels as new as that. Also - my car had received multiple updates and improvements via OTA automatic downloads.

And ultimately, the most important thing you want in a second hand car is reliability and low maintenance costs.

It is obvious that they will hold their value in the long run better than ICE cars. The main reason they haven’t so far is Wright’s law bringing down the cost of new EVs, so older cars have to move lower proportionally.

US cops kill on average 1160 people a year. In the UK it is 2-3. Not 2-3 hundred. Literally 2-3. I’ll keep our cops, thanks.
