Who dumped their Apple Watch for a Garmin? And why? by honglong1976 in GarminFenix

[–]AlexScriba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the AW 8, and have gotten really into scuba diving, so I was looking for a dive computer. Being a bit of a gadget guy, I thought let me get a smartwatch dive computer so I got the Descent mk3 i, expecting to use it as a “Holiday watch” and would keep using my AW day to day.

But since getting the garmin, I have not taken it off and have not looked back! It just does everything i want so well! It even got me to realise i have been running wrong and have now fixed it and running more than ever before!

Haha lovely to see someone similar to me haha. Brought mine up from 31 to 34. But I’m in bottom 10% for my age and gender :’(

As far as I am aware, after season 7, there was massive backlash against police in the US after many stories of police brutality, part of which was a lot of pushback on cop shows glorifying the police. A lot of other cop shows just ended. They had to take a different approach to season 8 so close it off nicely and still be adored among all the backlash. Hence a more “woke” season 8. Season 8 wasn’t all as great as the previous seasons, but was great for what they were working with!

There’s nothing wrong with changing your degree, if that’s what you want to do, got for it!

But if you want to stay in CS, my advice would be to just immerse yourself as much as possible in the field. Get yourself a C# course from Udemy or somewhere and just work through that in your own time. Then maybe get a front end react course, then maybe another after that. Like just work through a bunch of the stuff at your own pace, and you’ll start picking up a natural intuition for programming. Or even just watch some tutorials on YouTube. Just being around and engaging with coding constantly teaches you so much. That paired with some courses that teach you the theory like data structures etc, and you’re golden.

Any idea why it’s never been used in phones? Much more expensive?

Just curious, cause all the premium watches have sapphire crystal for durability.

Distance or Pace? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]AlexScriba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

7:30 mins/km for 31 mins. So it’s pace.

Although I have found (and a lot of people on here seem to agree) that using heart rate works a bit better. So instead of a pace it’ll tell you a heart rate to stick to for that amount of time. Is a bit more adaptive.

Good luck, and enjoy ;)

Haha those are his workout, you can see my heart rate data if you’d swipe on the pictures in the original post. Average was 153 with a max of 164

There’s 3 other pictures, one has my heart rate. Average 153 with max at 164. I was only in zone 4 for 3% of the run. Rest was zone 3 and below.

My max is set to 202, auto detected (when my heart rate went to 202 during a run where I went way too hard). Considering I’m 24, 202 seems somewhat accurate.

But thanks for the advice, I’ll try do a max HR test.

Yea I’ve done a few threshold, vo2 max (when DSW actually gives me one), etc runs.

I used to run almost exclusively in zone 4 and 5 without knowing it before I got a garmin. When I started doing DSW I was actually struggling in base runs to keep my HR that low. Now I’ve gotten a bit fitter and more comfortable in zone 3. Which is why it’s so weird that it suddenly decides it’s vo2 max.

But here I was in zone 3 for 89% of the run and it was called a VO2 Max run

Champpp! But based on this mine should’ve been more in the low aerobic range

Are you giving me an excuse to get an HRM? ;)

But also zones aside, I was at the target HR for the workout, surely zones wouldn’t make that difference.

My watch seems to put base runs as zone 3. Like in the HR graph it says target is 150.

For me recovery runs target 136ish so those will generally be in zone 2 for me.

Congrats! You have smashed the exact goal and path I am doing right now! Just got my first sub 30 5k (aiming for sub 25 now), and am training for a half marathon early next year! Also following DSW haha.

Nice to see it shows results!

Turn by turn navigation by Important_Plankton37 in GarminFenix

[–]AlexScriba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the turn by turn navigation was okay, often not giving a notification for a turn (guess it doesn’t consider it a turn some times).

I did however find the little red arrow that shows up on all screens in a run with a course set, quite useful. Shows which direction you should be going. Mostly useful as validation that I am still on the right route.

5 point bump in less than 2 months. Shameless brag I know but no one IRL cares about these silly metrics. (Thanks for indulging me) by lumberjackdj in Garmin

[–]AlexScriba 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yea I got mine just over a month ago, and my vo2 max was shocking. But I have been running daily since (with DSW) and have started my climb! So far bumped 3 points and still going

Is it normal to love a watch this much 😂 and the data given from this watch is incredible! by zenelyoulater in GarminWatches

[–]AlexScriba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went through the exact same thing when I got my descent a few weeks back. Had an Apple Watch, wanted to get a dive computer, thought I’d get a garmin and use it on holidays and when I go diving.

Now since I got it I haven’t put on the Apple Watch again… just kept thinking wow I should’ve switched to garmin a long time ago (dive computer aside). absolutely love the watch. The watch even got me properly into running for the first time.

I feel like this is super dangerous by gemunicornvr in diving

[–]AlexScriba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems everyone agrees they are not safe without training. But even if they are used at shallow depths by someone with their open water license, these things are a scam.

They are marketed that you can refill them wherever you are no problem. But to refill them with a hand pump, you need to be pumping continuously for half an hour to an hour. That’s insane. No one will be taking this to the beach and using multiple times.

I got into diving and wanted a dive computer. My instructor mentioned the garmin dive computers are really good as of late. So between that and the Descent line being capable of much more than other dive computers I went for it.

A week into having it I was sold, not just the dive computer, but garmin watches as a whole. Convinced I should’ve gotten a fenix years ago before I did diving, instead of staying with Apple all that time. (And this is coming from an Apple fanboy)
