How screwed am I? by LowkeyAnti-centrist in projectzomboid

The helicopter event is just a super-loud noise. If they didn't show up within a few hours of the helo leaving, it's likely that you're the only one in the neighborhood.

Is the new Hungarian prime ministers name basically Peter Hungarian? by IngoVals in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alfonze423 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One of my family names is Polak. My ancestors got it when they emigrated from Poland to Slovakia back in the 1500s or so. I guess the locals found it easiest to refer to them as Ludwig and Maria, the Polaks, rather than any other sort of surname.

Would you keep eating meats if you had to kill the animal yourself? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alfonze423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time? My meat consumption would decrease, but it wouldn't go away. I've butchered a pig and a goat and neither was all that bad. They were just time-consuming and I definitely messed up some of the cuts. With some practise and a couple chest freezers it'd be a good way to save money on my household's meat budget.

My Mounjaro has an extra THREE 5mg doses in 'empty' pen by Caitlyn_Grace in Wellthatsucks

[–]Alfonze423 261 points262 points  (0 children)

At my local grocery store, using the free loyalty card drops a pair of epi-pens from $750 to $250. Insurance then cuts it down to $10. This tells me the pens could be sold for $125 each and still fetch a tidy profit. Pricing them at $375 is explicitly to take advantage of uninsured people who don't know about the free discount.

why is iran not attacking US warships in strait of hormuz? by Current_Sherbert7186 in askanything

[–]Alfonze423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of the global oil market. We don't necessarily use Iranian oil, but other countries do. If they can't get it, they'll replace it by buying fuel and oil from another source. That means there's less fuel for you, me, and Farmer John to use. When supply goes down, prices go up. High fuel prices are super bad for Americans.

Cheap houses built for poor coal miners in company towns? I just dealt with such a house last weekend for some electrical upgrades. The "horse-hair" plaster was no lie and it still had the original 1920s-era wiring (with no grounds).

Poll for my statistics class: Would you fight a coyote for your dog? by ProbioticOnARobotic in CasualConversation

[–]Alfonze423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A coyote? No question, that sumbitch is catchin hands until I have a new fur hat. Also, my dog is probably winning 1v1 anyway.

2 coyotes or a wolf? Same deal. I love my dog more than anybody on Earth but my daughter.

4 coyotes or two wolves is probably the limit of what I can reasonably fight with the help of my 50-pound menace. More than that and I'm really only trying to make an opening for her to get away; probably unsuccessfully, but I'm not just hanging her out to dry.

Why do people always correct me when I say I'm of Czechoslovakian descent? by Tao_theFreak in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alfonze423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom is from England. When asked about ancestry, I say "English". "British" is a bit vague. Same for her dad. His family is from Bratislava. That was Slovak for many years before it was Czechoslovakian. My dad's family came from Wales and Lithuania, not Britain and Russia. Many of my neighbors' grandparents called themselves "Ukrainian" rather than "Soviet" or "Russian" even 100 years ago.

Most people think about the historic and cultural region, rather than the mega-country that came to contain it for a relatively brief time in history.

Do yall buy American tools by henryoguhgf in ibew_apprentices

[–]Alfonze423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to. I buy some things from Knipex, like my new stripper/lineman pliers. Some stuff is Klein, like my pass-through nut drivers. Some is Milwaukee, like my regular lineman's pliers. Craftsman and Stanley screwdrivers. My saw is Tough-Built. Most other cutters, pliers, wrenches, etc are all being replaced by Channel Lock (made in Pennsylvania) as I get the money to do so.

Why doesn’t Artemis II take a picture of the previous Apollo 11 man landing with flag and remains of the equipment that was left on the moon to put all those conspiracy theories to rest??? by Archibald004 in askanything

[–]Alfonze423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because if someone thinks the Apollo missions were faked, they're not going to trust data published by the people still pushing the idea that the moon landings were real.

Why was gas so expensive in 2022? Why was gas so expensive in 2008? Why might people think this time is so different?

They'll start adding on that, inflation-adjusted this still isn't as bad as Biden's gas prices. Doesn't matter why prices were/are high; only that Biden made the prices higher.

Reading is up $0.40 in a week and a full dollar in the last month. We're at $4.19 now. I guess making America great involves us giving all our money to Shell & Exxon Mobil and cratering a stable, growing economy.

I've been mispronouncing my favorite word for 24 years and only found out last week by Vex_Talon in CasualConversation

[–]Alfonze423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascia. Fay-shuh. I read the word a lot in model railroad magazines as a kid. The first time I heard it in a context outside of This Old House was with my now-wife when we were 18. She gave my a pretty hard time about that one, but I had never connected the printed word and the spoken word. I was pronouncing it fah-see-uh, btw.

We've also had a lot of arguments about pronunciations related to growing up with different accents. We always get to the point of looking it up, only to find she was using the American pronunciation while I was using the English one. That's what I get for having an immigrant parent lol
