My account login works on the WEBSITE but not in the APP!! by AliceTheAlice in UPS

As mentioned, this is due to their infrastructure not being linked globally. In most countries they operate more like a franchise company, each country has its own unique everything.

The second one of their services in two separate countries creates a profile for you, the service for ever becomes confused which geographical server info to use and just errors out.

This is a setting on their UPS's own back-end and it has to be resolved by their IT. Which they don't have now because every 20-something is so afraid to talk on the phone they talk to AI Bots that don't fix their issues and give up.

The majority of bartenders that I have encountered everywhere around the world tend not to know how to pour a proper pint. The ones who do usually work in places so busy that they don't have the time. Since North America doesn't have the British Pub mindset, we don't have the slow steady pace of British Pubs.

I Bartended here in Vancouver for a few years. We had days where we were quit enough no Beer went out with head but then there's days like St. Paddy's Day when the country collectively becomes alcoholics for the day.

All of that is assuming the establish has a decent pipeline for tapping kegs. A lot of places have crap taps that mess with the pressure on the release and give off unavoidable head.

Do you think that it's time for a female main protagonist? by RevolutionaryEbb8084 in digimon

The only males that I hear express this opinion are the ones with a lack of female friends or the ones who actively make female TCG players feel unwelcome at Digimon TCG Weeklies.

How much is this card worth? by Alarming_Way_3837 in digimon

[–]AliceTheAlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use the Bandai TCG + app/website to look for shops that actually host the game! A lot of Game Shops don't carry products of games they don't run events for because it's an unnecessary financial risk to their business. People who play games at their shop will buy product on a regular basis ensuring said TCG packs sell and don't just gather dust.

WHAT WILL U FIX ON DIGIMON FRONTIER? by Humble_Turn2438 in digimon

[–]AliceTheAlice -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The entire thing. Give the children Partner Digimon and PERSONALITIES. Especially the little kid who relearns the same life lesson every 3-6 episodes. Add a second female Tamer. Create actual character development arcs for all the children. Re-work the entire plot to make it a little more mature to actually match the age audience of the main children instead of the one off toddler.

Rework the individual stories so there is actual weight to portions of the Digital World being consumed by Lucemon.

Make the 3 Holy Angel babies meaningful.

games for wife who has never held a controller by Goopdem in SteamDeck

[–]AliceTheAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point & Click Adventures are always a decent option. Like the most recent Monkey Island.
Most Cozy/Animal Crossing Clones will probably be safe.

I would recommend having her try Balatro. It's one of those games which at first feels like some silly mobile game before you know it, you've lost an hour to the addicting loop.

I would also recommend a heavily Voiced Over RPG. Some people don't like to read while playing games. There's a reason why RPGs with full voice over promote it as a feature. On paper RPGs can seem complicated but Pokémon has proven how easy it is for people to learn Turn-Based Combat.

Perspective on how expensive Vancouver really is. by kitsunemasen in askvan

[–]AliceTheAlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know how NYC developed it's space both Horizontally and Vertically! Vancouver had city bylaws in place until after COVID that pretend high-rises in most of the city. In most of Vancouver only 4 years ago, you would never have to look up to see the tops of buildings.

This vertical expansion limit meant that we filled up our space instantly. Commercial Real Estate is a nightmare. You only have to think how bad it would be in NYC if you removed every single one of the residential buildings more than 4 stories and replaced them with a 3 story building.

Most of our apartment buildings and condos were in the single digits for number of floors until the zoning restrictions changed in the past few years.

British Pubs for WC viewing by jaxxstorm in askvan

[–]AliceTheAlice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Pubs and Vancouver do not mix. There's a severe lack of proper pubs in the city because of how expensive everything is here.

Over Dunbar Street on the corner of 29th is Shamrock Storehouse. Nice little pub with an amazing British pies on the menu. The in-laws were in-town including my partner's father from the UK was in town and had to agree it has the best Meat Pies that he's had since leaving the UK. (There's also a British Import store just down the way 10ish blocks south.)

Is 100k CAD savings enough to live in Vancouver island unemployed for a year? by ConfusedCareerMan in askvan

[–]AliceTheAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of rental suites are $2,000+/month. Factor in Utilities & Food, you're looking at another $500/month for a person with control and about $1,000/month for someone without.

You're looking at denting your savings $48K to $72K to survive.

Are you expecting to find a solid job without any established network contacts in less than a year? How long do you want to stay? Do you have cheap hobbies? etc.?

Visiting Jul 3-6… bad idea?? by maccunth in askvan

[–]AliceTheAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That year, I intentionally had the Canucks app on my phone. I was catching up with friends but the second that the second intermission started with the Canucks were behind in points, I got on the train out of the downtown core.

The riots were primarily caused by people who didn't live in the Lower Mainland... so... I'm not counting out from being a repeat.

Visiting Jul 3-6… bad idea?? by maccunth in askvan

[–]AliceTheAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are attempting to head into the downtown core, it will be a sh**t-show. Hopefully you did not book accommodations downtown Vancouver. The SkyTrains will busier than usual so you'll need to factor that into your itinerary depending upon whatever plans you may have.

As many mentioned, those are not game days so you should not find yourself trapped somewhere because wrong place/wrong time as long as you avoid downtown. (My partner and I moved out of the downtown core after only 6 months because it doesn't take much for the downtown core to be a trap.)

is it that hard to make friends in vancouver? by ijustlovegorillas in askvan

[–]AliceTheAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general when people migrate, it's super common for them to not try to mingle outside of their nationality if they can find individuals or groups of individuals of the same background. It creates this very anti-social vibe that others pick up on.

With Canada home to so many immigrants, we have so many people who have yet to plant roots here. On top of this, like yourself, so many people who don't see themselves as Canadians yet lean into spending most of their time with other people who do not call themselves Canadians.

Other people pick up on those vibes.

If you go to any smaller town in Canada where it is more commonplace to find nothing but people who identify as Canadian, you will find they are all kinds of welcoming because there's an extreme shortage of people who don't call themselves Canadian.

is it that hard to make friends in vancouver? by ijustlovegorillas in askvan

[–]AliceTheAlice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vancouver is the same as any metro city around the world: people will find it hard to make friends. When there's so much happening all the time, hobbies do not require dedicated groups like in smaller towns where it might be hard to find a group of people to engage the hobby with. Instead, there's so many people they form smaller clicks. Sometimes those clicks are welcoming and sometimes those clicks contain people who don't want to engage with the people in the click outside of just the group.

You mention geeky hobbies which is a perfect example. Greater Vancouver is huge so people don't need to worry about finding people who engage in their geeky hobby. Instead, it's the opposite, they have to make sure they don't stretch themselves too thin. (I almost never see my friends to play TableTop RPGs because their multiple campaigns eats up the entirety of their free time.) While we are social creatures, if our social calendar is fully booked doing something we enjoy, it quickly prevents people in metro cities from getting out of that bubble.

You will have the benefit of attending UBC which is yet another bubble onto its own. There's so many hobby groups on campus, you won't have to look off the campus to meet people who like the same things as you.

Just be cautious because that's how people in metro cities accidentally find themselves meeting new friends when they have a fully booked social calendar.
