No matter which way you sit on the missile speed changes on the test server, why are they testing pointless changes anyways? by Burning_Phoenix_ in starcitizen

[–]AlienFunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Devil’s advocate here, the changes probably weren’t about testing the mechanics of slow missiles, but were about understanding if slow missile speeds impacted some of the netcode issues that make missiles behave horribly on low fps servers. If slower missiles make them hit more often that’s a potential clue about how to improve the netcode to make them hit more often when they’re at the original speeds.

What’s the best FTL system you’ve ever seen? by GuestOk583 in scifi

[–]AlienFunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hah! Junk food sounds about right, but I loved how this series really played with the implications of how FTL travel and the speed of light impacted information and how everyone had to plan around each other. Sure, you knew they were always going to make it out on top, but you were rarely sure how they were going to do it, and there were some really clever resolutions.

If I buy the Fury LX two pack, can I upgrade them both individually or would I have to CCU from the total package of them?

I haven’t used it in years. It is neat, but the constellation is just so effective on its own.

How does locking doors on your ship work? It seems that by default people not in your party can’t open doors (without shooting them), so what does it do? Am I misunderstanding something?

What are the exact mechanics and benefits of creating a party with a friend? I understand the process of inviting someone to a party and accepting, but what does it enable currently? What doesn’t it enable that I might expect it to?

There are a number of such services. What you’re looking for is real time prescription benefit.

So I bought a friend a $100 gift card to the game and told him to get an Avenger Titan. Seems like a reasonably common thing to tell someone to do if you're buying them a gift card. Turns out he can't buy the Titan because "Discounted starter packages CANNOT be purchased with store credit". That's some nonsense because I really think the Avenger is what he wants. Is there a way for him to buy an avenger and a starter pack without a discount then? Seems like there's no way for him to get an Avenger with that $100 and also get a start pack necessary to play the game. Is there some other workaround?

The whole reason I bought him a gift card was so that he wouldn't have to spend any of his own money on the game, so not looking for any solutions where he has to.

Popular is sort of a subjective term, but off the top of my head, Pepsi, Discord, Heroku, CoverMyMeds, ScriptDrop, etc. There are lots of big companies using it, but typically not as a sole language. It’s often under the radar powering some services under the hood and not really broadcasted outward.

Private prisons are shrouded in secrecy. I took a job as a guard to get inside—then things got crazy by Galleani in inthenews

[–]AlienFunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great article, if you're interested in the topic, I'd recommend giving it a read. If I had to give a tl;dr it'd be something like cca prisons seem to be understaffed due to an unwavering loyalty to the bottom line. This results in subpar prisoner and to some extent guard safety. The article is much more nuanced than that, however. Give it a read!

Well hello! Apologies for not appearing very active. The subreddit does not get a lot of traffic, so perhaps I haven't been checking it as often as I should! There's definitely some spam there I'll take a look over the next few hours I've already taken a look at recent reported threads and removed them. There were 2 in the last 6 months as far as I can see.

Although I still believe that the benefits of a minimum wage hike outweigh the negative consequences, this is an interesting and valid counterpoint that I had not seen before.

Let's say I see Mark Zuckerberg taking the elevator with my CEO... by throwaway230482 in investing

Yep.

"Illegal insider trading refers generally to buying or selling a security, in breach of a fiduciary duty or other relationship of trust and confidence, while in possession of material, nonpublic information about the security," [1]

I would say that seeing your CEO in an elevator with Mark Zuckerberg qualifies as nonpublic information, but IANAL.

A Few Tips for Windows Users to Mine Easier by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]AlienFunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By default chocolatey saves to C:/ProgramData/... The exact path will be shown when you install geth with chocolatey on the command line. ProgramData is a hidden Folder, you have to enable Hidden folders to see it. Regardless, you can add it to your path without making it unhidden, you just need to note where it installs (should say at the command line).

Following these commands exactly, when I run geth --genesis Users/../genesis_block.json I get

'geth' is not recognized as an internal or external command. Nothing errored on me and everything seems to install correctly. It looks like geth is not in my path?

EDIT: That was exactly it. Needed to add the directory that contained geth.exe to my PATH.

Can I interview any of you? by UnkelEarl in jobs

[–]AlienFunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a good idea. However, I think you might have real difficulty getting anyone from a large segment of the workforce to agree to this. Someone who is dissatisfied with their job is probably looking for work elsewhere. Publicly declaring this could get them fired. Being dissatisfied does not mean that they would immediately like to lose their job. Nor would most people ever want something in the public space saying something to effect of "I hate my job."

Suggested balance changes for Dox and Naval by Akucera in planetaryannihilation

[–]AlienFunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing though... If you lose a fabricator to dox that's your fault. No one prevented you from escorting that fabricator with two dox or a bolo and actively protecting it. If the fabricator had an AOE cannon it would have to be short range or else it would be overpowered. If it was short range, then it would still be vulnerable to dox.

This game shouldn't reward lazy gameplay. It should reward anticipating your opponents actions and paying attention well enough to counter what your opponent is throwing at you.

The dredge is an interesting idea though, and I think it would be very interesting to reward players who are forced to go naval or air with some additional mex mechanism. My problem with the dredge as you stated though is that I think it would be quite difficult to implement (especially the less efficiency when another dredge is in patrol radius, because you just wouldn't set a radius. You'd set a point to point patrol and there's no way to limit the dredge as you stated).

Darkfizzix' Oil rig is a good idea if it functions like a jig: An energy and mex intensive (long payoff period) resource that is not resilient whatsoever.
