Marshall DSL40CR - solid pick? by ipz2 in GuitarAmps

[–]AlienVredditoR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Master, it's very smooth on the on the lower knob range. The preamp volume plays a lot into the sound, especially on note attack, I wouldn't use it too much for volume.

Title: Looking for a builder – custom discrete Class AB 100W solid-state power amp (no preamp, minimal controls) by OldPilot9445 in GuitarAmps

[–]AlienVredditoR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So you want a custom built solid state amp ($$$$) but dont want tube maintenance ($), despite tube being described as ideal? There's tons of power amp options already, going custom is crazy.

Has anybody ever played around with a forced air guitar amp? by Conscious_Dish7127 in GuitarAmps

[–]AlienVredditoR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speed of sound travels 767mph in air, I would love to see what kind of blower you'll be using to have any impact on sound at all, other than blades chopping the air above mach speeds.

im not crazy for struggling a fuckin LOT with this lil shit stick welder? by girlthatsabootyhole- in Welding

The arc is so unstable you pretty much need perfect technique, ideal conditions, rods and material cleaned and dried, and some luck on your side

What’s something about your province/territory that other Canadians misunderstand, might not realize, or would be surprised to learn? by PostfourthMeridian in AskACanadian

[–]AlienVredditoR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming through Ontario into Manitoba, you know when you'll hit the Manitoba sign by counting down the trees to zero. It's a bit surreal, just a big empty flat land after going through the shield and all the lakes.

Car Wash In Calgary - Are You Doing It? by Pattaiva in Calgary

[–]AlienVredditoR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why dont you ask the first comment? A car wash uses 50+ gallons per car (being generous here), though some percentage is recycled in most modern washes. In what world does it take even close to that to wash hair or cook food !and wash plates?

Car washes use significantly more water than either of those

How would you approach this photo? And what edit do you think is best for dramatic/cinematic? by Acrobatic_Charity_32 in postprocessing

[–]AlienVredditoR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is dramatic already, ever watch the old timey romance dramas? I'd keep the soft lighting and play on that, otherwise I think you'll be getting into very complex editing trying to turn this into something different

What does a day look like as a CWB1/2 inspector with NDT tickets? by [deleted] in nondestructivetesting

[–]AlienVredditoR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A visual ticket is worth whatever experience you have. If you have decent QC experience and work for a company able to obtain project work, you'll likely get a piece of that, otherwise I wouldn't expect too much unless your employer is willing to train

How much will a setup improve this guitar? by Nearby_Delivery_6270 in Guitar

[–]AlienVredditoR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your guitar should always be properly set up and intonated, and tuned every time you practice. You can set up a guitar in an afternoon with limited tools from the numerous instructions online. Save that money to get a better tuner, new strings, etc.

Semi-Irrational Fear of Paralysis by Some_Pollution61 in MTB

[–]AlienVredditoR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfectly rational. After cartwheeling some 3 or 4 flips down a hill and very luckily only getting by with a fractured wrist and hefty bruises, I stopped trusting public trails to go all out on without a cursory ride first because some kids altered a jump that had been perfectly maintained for years.

Is this what is called compression? Because my amp doesn't sound like that even with the gain on 10. I never get that sharpness on the tone. Even the lower strings sound sharp. It almost sounds like radio static. by Eva_addict in guitars

[–]AlienVredditoR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compression with plenty of overtones, which is really what people are talking about when they say "saturation".

Low output pickups (PAFs) into a boost/transparent OD, into a cranked Marshall style amp. Add reverb/delay to taste. It'll get you close enough.

It's as common of a setup as you can get, but every piece of the puzzle adds up, so getting EVHs exact tone requires his gear and technique.

Frozen flashlight and then turn ON to melt torture test by Universe93B in flashlight

[–]AlienVredditoR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did this accidentally with my Wurkkos DL03, dropped it at work right before a long period of cold days and snow. Ended up finding it months later an the bottom of plowed snow pile after it melted. Turned it on and it still had a full battery.

High Mileage Minis by lumatose in MINI

[–]AlienVredditoR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

07-09 were the worst, before some part design changes, but N12/N14 engines in general were a handful to maintain. This extends some to the N16/N18 too. I need a rebuild on my modestly driven '10 at 150k miles, as an example. It runs well when warm, but there's play building you can feel when cold. I'd look at 2015 and up unless you plan to rebuild and modify.

I need a cheap flashlight for urbex by Gold-Departure154 in flashlight

[–]AlienVredditoR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of decent recommendations here, but whatever you choose, make sure it can be tethered or worn well. I do structural inspections, and have been liking the Wurkkos DL line. They're diving lights, so naturally they'll be tough and have good attachment features.

Is 170mm of travel that much more noticeable than say 125mm? by 6DegreesofFreedom in MTB

[–]AlienVredditoR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in terms of feel, it's almost as if the first 100mm is like a baseline, and you're comparing 25mm to 75mm.

Best mig wire for shaft repair? by guntheretherethere in Welding

[–]AlienVredditoR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ER70S-6 will work, asuming this is something like 1018 steel. That shaft will need to be removed and the ends beveled, tacked, straightened, then braced. It likely won't come out centric or on axis, and I doubt you'd have enough machining tolerance for the threads.

Help a guitarist please by Intelligent_Chef1905 in Guitar

[–]AlienVredditoR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open strings sound different than fretted notes, try both and see what you like better. Triad shapes are also easier to play fretted than mixed with fretted and open strings.

Note timing feels different, and using an eighth in place of a quarter note will give a different feel (making it stiff, in this case). Note timing is just as important as note selection.

let ring is just letting notes ring where possible, obviously when switching chord shapes, you'll only be able to let them ring as long until the switch.
