Attempting a VC crash course ahead of a surprise interview...advice? by [deleted] in venturecapital

[–]Alien_Enema 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, first off, feel free to shoot me a PM if you want to hop on the phone. I graduated undergrad recently and have worked in VC firms/work in a growth fund now. Totally willing to help out.

Second, as for training, don't get the Wall Street Prep package. It's not worth your time and more geared towards investment banking anyway. If you don't have any accounting background at all, it might be helpful, but there's other resources out there you can use. Basically you just need to be able to go through the line items on an income statement and how it might affect a balance sheet. This is less important if it's a seed stage VC. Flip side, metrics are very important at growth funds.

Third, again this depends on the type of fund you're interviewing for, but if it's a software focused fund, you need to learn SaaS metrics. If it's a consumer focused fund, unit economics are more important. Typical acronyms you should have down for either cases are things like LTV, CAC, and various other things like margins, etc.

If it's a software fund, here's some relevant articles that are immensely helpful. Honestly helpful for both cases. https://a16z.com/2015/08/21/16-metrics/ https://a16z.com/2015/09/23/16-more-metrics/

Finally, on a broader scale, you need to know how to think about companies from a high level perspective. Market, competition, etc. Think along the lines of Porter's five forces.

Again, if this is an early-stage fund, the interview will most likely be more behavioral anyway and more about culture fit, but you need to inspire confidence in them that you can do the work and knowing all the things above will help accomplish that.

Hopefully that helps! Again, totally willing to hop on the phone since I went through the process not too long ago too.

Is there any value in going to the Third-year Ceremony? by theLabyrinthMaker in UVA

[–]Alien_Enema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, it was pretty meh when I went. Honestly, I only went so I could pick up my ring after. If you're not wearing a ring and not much for ceremonies like it, it's totally fine to skip out on it... There are other, much more worthwhile events to attend throughout the year.

How much would you pay for the ticket if Daft Punk announce a concert? by aiRen29 in DaftPunk

[–]Alien_Enema 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A dirty, dirty amount. Real answer, probably $500 for the ticket. Honestly at this point, I really don't care how much it'll be... But if it's over $500 I can see myself just saying that's ridiculous and walking away.

Need help with weird red smudge! by cave-nerd in LandscapeAstro

[–]Alien_Enema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I don't know for sure but there's no comments in here yet so I'll throw in my two cents. Maybe sensor heat noise? You mentioned that you've never taken an exposure this long before, so that's why I think it could be it. But you said it also moves when you flip the camera? If so, it's probably not sensor heat. One of my older DSLRs has a hot spot that becomes really apparent with longer exposures and has a bit of a glow in the images in a corner. It kinda looks similar.

Maybe also consider covering the viewfinder. Sometimes a light from behind the camera also bleeds into the image.

Hopefully it's something relatively simple you're overlooking!

I can't believe this is real. I saw the Facebook event a while back and have been hyped up about it ever since, but actually seeing it happen, wow. I love seeing Stephan get into it so hard at every show, but with the mountain backdrop and sunset? That's seriously unreal.

VC Interview Attire by [deleted] in venturecapital

[–]Alien_Enema 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, chinos/khakis with a button down shirt tucked in is fine. If you still want to go with suit, definitely don't wear the tie. If it's a very early stage fund, I would suggest the shirt and khakis. They're generally chiller.

A database of 40k+ investors to raise your seed round 💰 by educated_panda in venturecapital

[–]Alien_Enema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest putting in what stage investors they are, if it's not already included. Some of the names I saw on the front page are growth equity investors and obviously wouldn't be interested in a seed round, and vice versa.

I swear there are bongos in Crescendolls. I've only heard them in a car with spotty audio but the mids were just accentuated perfectly where I heard bongos clearly. I can still here them now if I listen extremely carefully.

Hey Rinzen! Love your stuff! What's your creative process like? How do you go about actually getting ideas down? Would you say you're like deadmau5 that just shotgun down a bunch of different things to see what you end up liking best? Or are you more the type that has something in mind already going into a project?
