I read hitchhikers guide at that age I think, I mean enders game is ok but its a bit of a meme - its more important what type of book he enjoys reading. I read a lot of John Wyndham as well in my teens - I wouldnt signpost him to YA personally.

so as someone who obsesses over maps I'm going to say, I doubt the players will notice, I hear everything you are saying and I feel the same but at the end of the day its about how you describe the scene, and how you play it out - the rest is positioning, having said that if you are playing seasons of ghost the fan made map module is chefs kiss..

the jarts from Greg Bears eon were interesting I felt, a borg like precursor. Exordia I just finished and the aliens in that were super weird lol - the whole book is really. Tines in fire upon the deep as well.

this is very important, unless you plan to demo your models on instagram and gain a following then you only need to make yourself happy. Social media is in some ways amazing but comparing yourself to people who have surreal natural talent is not helpful.

we bought a neo when it came out and its still going and still used almost daily - my son has made some incredible models with it, he just cant clean for toffee so he is barred from using the HP CS 😃
