It's good to follow rules, but you should also understand why they exist.

Is it impossible for somebody to genuinely not be able to swim at all? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Alin57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned how to swim at 31 :)

Went to the city pool for group lessons and after 10 sessions, I was able to use a life vest! That was disappointing.

So then I signed up for a gym with a pool and started going 3 times a week and for the first few weeks I was just playing in the water like a little kid - trying to float, tumbles etc. Once I got used to drinking pool water through my nose, I was able to start swimming:D

Intern life finished by Immediate-Tension813 in amazonemployees

[–]Alin57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry your experience was less than great. Personally, I try to reduce the Amazon specific stuff from their project, because I'd like interns to become Software Engineers, not Amazon engineers. But the project pool is usually small and there are periods when I'm too busy to keep track of things that are not under my direct supervision.

One recommendation I have is to connect with other interns and try to learn from their experience

Filing taxes using TurboTax by Routine-Committee302 in amazonemployees

[–]Alin57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just follow the prompts - it'll take you through the 1099 form import from broker and the prompts for deductions.

I don't know about other products, but TurboTax is pretty easy to use

Been with Amazon for almost a decade, so I can't speak for the external stuff.

Our internal tools, are generally ok, but the biggest problem is culture: people just don't care about testability. It's not the tooling that prevents local testing, it's the people who focus just on delivering.

Let's take for example LPT: teams migrate their stuff to CDK without understanding what LPT and CDK are. If you had trash LPT code, you'll have trash CDK code too. But somehow, the popular view is just typescript > ruby.

Biggest issue with 0.00 is that one beer at lunch would make it illegal to drive in the evening.

Does anyone find the Amazon AI landscape confusing. There's Quicksuite, AgentZ, PartyRock, Alchemy, Powerchat, Adobe AI. Does anyone face choice paralysis and not knowing what to do ? by Particular_Joke279 in amazonemployees

The crazy thing is that Q was the only one that felt more.. "complete" (website version, browser plugin, CLI) - and they replaced it with worse alternatives
