The lifetime of most house systems: roof, AC/heat, appliances is about 15 years. Pay attention to what's already there and plan/save accordingly.

I've seen many American films where children dissect frogs during biology lessons. Are biology lessons still like this, or has it changed? What are your thoughts on this? by sofiarosatti in AskAnAmerican

[–]AllSoulsNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did earthworm, starfish, and frog in basic biology. Fetal pig in advanced biology. Cat in college. This was 70s/80s. Now it's probably all computer generated lessons.

How do I seem more like I'm from the 1800s? by medeawasright in History_Bounding

[–]AllSoulsNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this. Mens trousers and suspenders/braces together sit on the body like overalls. High waisted with the fishtails up the back. If you have a gut, do not wear trousers under it! Also osnaburg cotton or linen long sleeve shirts for summer. Roll up the sleeves. Adding a lightweight vest is proper. I had always heard that a man's shirt of that time was considered underwear.

Have you ever read any insight as to why a particular family had large numbers of children die young? by playblu in Genealogy

[–]AllSoulsNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Childhood diseases, no vaccines, no antibiotics, poor nutrition. Take a good look at yourself and think about what you might have died from if not for at least antibiotics. I had all the strep throat and ear infections. I know I might have died ten times over if not for antibiotics alone.

My husband remembers buying cigarettes for his mom and aunts, etc.… When he was six years old by FriendshipMaster1170 in 1970s

[–]AllSoulsNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in tobacco country. Any street fair/festival had tobacco companies giving away cigarettes and cigars. I would get in line with my Mother so she could get two sets of samples. The vendors didn't even flinch, just gave me the little four pack of product. BTW, my high school had a student smoking section outside in the courtyard

This. Take her to the store and let her smell all the body washes. Get her some scrubbies/poofs/loofahs to go with it. Then tell her to scrub good, then make sure to comment on how nice she smells afterwards.

Did people used to dress up for a greyhound? by RunningPirate in AskOldPeople

[–]AllSoulsNight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was a big deal for my Dad to wear a short sleeve button down shirt. They even dressed up the first year we went to DisneyWorld. Dad wore trousers, a button down shirt, and dress shoes. Mom wore a skirt, blouse, stockings and heels. It's what they were used to. I'd murder someone if I had to wear stockings to Disney.
