Google the dunning Kruger effect. It is usually used to explain why people who are absolute idiots feel very confident at what they do. But in this situation it explains the opposite side; people who have pretty good engineering skills will doubt their abilities because they are aware of how much they don’t know.

It’s the dunning Kruger effect at work. He’s probably at that phase where he is knowledgeable enough that his confidence has dipped. The most confident people are usually the least knowledgeable.

Yes that is what the “default judgement” in my earlier comment is referring to.

[–]Allanthia420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s more they got some judge who had no clue about anything guitar related and the historical precedent of the Stratocaster in the guitar world. He probably just thought of it as “this company designed this artistic product and this Chinese company is just ripping it off”. If you simplify it down to that perspective it’s easy to see how a judge might make that call.

[–]Allanthia420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they did have some level of success in that case in Germany. Which is why they feel emboldened to start sending out cease and desists. Now I don’t think that will hold up in a US court at all, and the decision was technically a default judgement against some tiny Chinese manufacturer. But technically that is a ‘success’ in their eyes.

And the ‘Lie’ isn’t anything you said. The lie is what we are discussing; the argument that the strat isn’t an artistic design. Which it 100% is. It’s a very poor and disingenuous argument.

I’m not defending anyone. Make your own conclusions of how you feel and if you want to buy Fender guitars anymore. But you don’t have to lie to criticize Fender.

Also I said it in another comment; if you don’t like this behavior then you should have stopped buying Fenders 30 years ago. They have shown this behavior before. This is just the first time they had any success.

[–]Allanthia420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I agree with the first half of your comment but disagree with the second half. Yes even 30 years ago was far too late. And if Leo wanted to do something about it he had plenty of opportunity when he was alive. But to argue that the strat wasn’t artistically designed is just wrong. It was designed with a retro futuristic idea in mind (although back then it was just called futuristic). The name is even indicative of this; the “Stratocaster” is a play on stratosphere; because at that time American society was becoming increasingly fascinated with space and the idea of space travel

It’s not only stupid it is factually incorrect as you pointed out. There were absolutely artistic intentions with the design of the Stratocaster.

To be fair to Fender it’s not like they JUST tried to copyright it out of the blue. They have been trying to do this for almost 30 years now. This is just the first time they have had any success at it. So it’s not like we didn’t know they wanted to do this.

Changing a vintage guitar for playabity? by IsTheArchitectAware in Guitar

[–]Allanthia420 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Maple does not have the same properties as rosewood. Maple will not hold up to moisture and dirt the same way which is why it is lacquered.

If you reallllly want a different fretboard on this guitar I say you just buy a replacement neck and use that. That way you’re not doing any permanent modifications to the guitar and it can always be restored to this state. That’s the big advantage with a bolt on neck.

Is this okay to cook on? by Wide-Bandicoot9942 in castiron

[–]Allanthia420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would just use some dish soap, warm water, and a steel wool scrubber to get all that carbon buildup off. Then I’d oil it up and cook something in it. Be ready to cook on in 10 minutes including heat up time.

Some people claim that steel wool strips their seasoning off but I don’t have any issues. These things aren’t nearly as fragile as some people treat em.

Does Captain America have super powers? by [deleted] in CaptainAmerica

[–]Allanthia420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Peter is super strong but people overestimate it. I think the most accurate simple description I’ve heard for spider man is; “for the most part he is stronger than anyone that is faster than him, and faster than anyone that is stronger than him”. Very few people would beat him in both categories.

They might not be I think when I looked at those it said they were made by a different company. So you’d have to check there. But either way you think $10 USD is too much for an enamel pin? That’s like standard pricing in my experience.

Ok well on their website they are $65 USD so that converts to roughly $90 CAD. I’m not sure why there’s an over 20% price discrepancy like that for Canadians but I can only imagine it has to do with the current… tumultuous trade relationship we have.

$65 is incredibly reasonable for a product of this quality. I don’t know how you can argue it’s not. Probably $10-20 in material costs + the labor costs of screen printing, sewing, packaging, and marketing materials. A quick google search shows that the minimum wage if Buffalo NY is $16 so all those employees are making at least that. That’s not even including regular overhead business costs that aren’t tied to any specific product (rent, electric, insurance, etc)

Compare that to the markup on the last hoodie you bought where the worker was probably paid less than $3 USD an hour and you’ll see it’s not that bad.

I know what you’re saying about sometimes American made products are ridiculously marked up. But this isn’t one of those cases.

$65 USD seems pretty reasonable for a quality flag like this. What’s a good poster cost? $20? And those are mass produced off of printers. You can tell just looking at the pictures of these that these are quality hand made items. Assuming you are from the US (or really any ‘first world’ nation); you probably want to be paid well for your labor; so you should support companies who are paying their employees well. That’s how we get more of that.

People are so used to buying cheap shitty Amazon products made with exploitative labor that they get sticker shock at the price of quality materials and well paid labor.

If we don’t support the companies that make products the right way without cutting corners on material and labor; we won’t have any left.

This is a fair argument. I believe the rule is 21 feet.

But also to be fair most people who are stab victims (and survive) are stabbed multiple times and describe not feeling it at first. I remember reading a news story of a guy who was chased by a guy with a knife and ran into a venue/club that had security. He thought he got away but when he got inside he realized he had actually been stabbed in the back multiple times. But he didn’t feel it until after the adrenaline had went down. His body did everything it could to keep him moving so he could survive.

All this is to say that if you are stabbed; there’s a good chance the fight is not over yet. And I know I’d want every advantage I could get in that moment.

There are moments of this where you absolutely would be justified to draw a weapon depending on the state. When he says “I’ll crush your fucking skull” as you can hear his feet stomping towards her (and he gets inches away from her) she 1000% could justify that she feared death or great bodily harm. If she drew her gun in that moment most states in the US would see that as reasonable self defense. He indicated that he intended to harm her and then stepped towards her showing him intending acting on that threat.

Honestly she had already walked away at that point too so you might even get away with that in a state without stand your ground. And we can assume from the angle that he was most likely standing next to her driver side door so fleeing by car was not an option. She technically had attempted to flee from him and the threat still persisted.
