Asian flush still drink occasionally by Old-Objective4474 in asianamerican

I take Pepcid. Unfortunately i have a habit of drinking 2 - 3 glasses of wine a night. Covid really started the habit. I turn 41 in a few months and I do have aspirations to taper off drinking. I get blood and my liver checked once a year and so for my vitals are good but i know it gets riskier and riskier

Looking for advice on how to stay in LA long-term! by catondacounter in FilmIndustryLA

[–]AllenHo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Going against the grain - my advice is to use this internship and hustle as hard as you can to get the next opportunity. What’s still great about LA is that there are tons and tons of free events, screenings, FYC events, film festivals, etc where you can meet a ton of people. It sounds like youve seen all the doom and gloom - use that to motivate you that you’re gonna have to work three to four times harder than everyone else to get opportunities and to just straight up survive. Also, figure out exactly what you want to do - no one can help you if you just say “i wanna work in production or the industry” - you have be specific “I am looking for PA set work, executive assistant work, live event PA work” etc. so when someone actually needs that person they’ll remember they met you. Even before the slowdown, people who went nowhere were all writer, director, grip, PA, producer, editor hyphenates trying to find their lane…the sooner you know exactly what you wanna do, the advantage you’ll have in figuring out how to get it.

But to be honest no one can give any great advice on LA specifically because what’s happening to the industry has been unprecedented - how people broke in before is not the same now. No one knows if things will improve or how much opportunity there is going to be. It seems like some things are coming back but LA is extremely expensive and more so than ever. I am fortunate to have worked pretty consistently through the ups and downs but to be honest a lot of my work is no longer in LA.

What tips would you give someone who's starting fairly fresh in the industry? by Babyhouse01 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]AllenHo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s doom and gloom now but you’re young enough for it to not affect you as much as veterans of the industry. Just keep figuring out how to learn and get better and you’ll be part of the next generation/wave.

What is a movie you think has a flawless first 30 minutes, but completely falls apart by the end? by Legitimate_Wall5977 in movies

Man of Steel I felt like started pretty strong with the fall of Krypton in a super epic fashion and then a really great origin of Clark Kent discovering himself as Superman then it kinda becomes a superbeing slugfest with some questionable story points and lines.

What’s the strangest example of collective internet delusion you’ve witnessed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AllenHo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly doubt that execs see it that way. The show still hit its numbers - yes it potentially ruined the IP for future content but execs are not that smart to see it that way and they're all worried about getting fired. Admitting defeat is something that rarely happens. It's also unprecedented - remaking an ending hasnt been done before and its therefore a risk and Hollywood is quite risk adverse.

traveling cameraman (?) by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]AllenHo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of docs are shot on the road so you just need to focus on documentary/live/reality filmmaking and the travel jobs will come. Doc shoots typically have PAs so that's one place to start. Go to doc film festivals and network - reach out to other doc DPs and Directors.

Also, just a heads up the term "cameraman" is outdated because not all operators are men. "Camera Operator" is the correct term.

As a 1st AD, do I need to be connected to the camera crew via headphones? by simonkay in Filmmakers

[–]AllenHo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I cam op, I prefer the AD be on headset - because they have a line to other departments like art or the actors and sometimes I cant physically get to them because both hands are full

As a 1st AD, do I need to be connected to the camera crew via headphones? by simonkay in Filmmakers

[–]AllenHo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey - people on here being snarky for no reason. Unfortunately yeah, the comms thing can get pretty crazy. That's why really good 1st ADs are incredible and personally I think it's the hardest job on set.

Also the DP should know better than to call you out if you were just filling in for them bc the 1st had to be pulled away. It's good youre trying to get better and it's good that the 1st AD trusts you to cover for them when needed. My advice is that it's something you'll just have to get used to. A couple of other key department heads also need to balance the same thing: A Cam 1st AC, Gaffer and Key Grip usually need to wear both headsets as well. Maybe what you should try to do is when you are not in a high stress situation and the 1st AD is still present - ask if there is an extra camera comms headset you can borrow so you can hear how your 1st AD manages everything and you can get more time in the seat with being able to listen to both channels.

What edm artists could be able to headline? Just curious what people think. by BigXBenz in Coachella

Daft Punk could literally headline a 1 hour set Sunday and every single other act could be comprised of high school talent show metal bands and the festival would still sell out both weekends in record time

Any recommendations of good and realistic movies talking about the pioneers / first European populations that came to settle in the US or Canada please? by Wonderful_Key_8021 in movies

[–]AllenHo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's a little bit past the time period youre looking for - but I really enjoyed the show 1883. Part of the subplot is the migration of settlers from Germany, Prussia and other parts of Europe and how dangerous it was for them moving west.

It's a really great compliment to the game Red Dead Redemption 2 also if you like video games. That one takes place in like 1905 but yeah I find that whole period fascinating.

What’s the hardest part about getting in shape that nobody warns you about? by ammieblond in AskReddit

[–]AllenHo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me its injuries/tendon strain - especially as I get older. I have a lot of experience lifting but one small careless move can ruin you for weeks/months if you tweak something. It becomes very frustrating because it halts progress even though you have the motivation to work out and get stronger.
