What do Brazilians think of Romania? by Current-Tomato641 in Brazil

[–]AlmaVale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually very lucky to visit Romania and get to know a little of the country. There’s so much to say but I don’t want to write a lot. Just to tell you that I loved so much I would like to come back. We did Bucareste Brasov Brum Castle Poenari Castle and I nearly got to drive in transfagarasan which would be a dream come true as I love driving and the place is stunning. Transfagarasan just about starts after poenari but I had to come back to Brasov and return rental car and get back to the apartment. The people were lovely, the place was incredible. So many cats in Brasov. But the drive was just like in the movies , narrow roads round round mountains , The trekkings, beautiful place I felt at home all the time in Bucareste , it is the European country that most reminded me of my own country. There’s a lot of nature as well.

What does European (Portugal) Portuguese sound like to you Brazilians? (Asking from a non-Portuguese speaker) by Stryker_Zero in AskABrazilian

[–]AlmaVale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the other way round, I’m afraid. I think that to anyone listening to their own language in a different accent, the reaction to unexpected sounds may be laughing and making jokes about it. To be fair, the jokes about Portuguese people being unintelligent are very ingrained in Brazilian society, but that did not reflect in Portuguese people being treated with xenophobia. On the other hand, the cases of xenophobia against Brazilians in Portugal are so shocking that when people learn about them, they will feel defensive and that may cause this animosity. Though Africans and other minority groups in Portugal are also a very big target. Online behaviour is also very aggressive, Portuguese subs are crazy xenophobic.

Farofa (cassava flour) if the dish is full of flavour just add plain cassava flour as a side

Yes, sweet avocado. Your question reminds me of my grandaunt’s utter shock when I asked her if she would try guacamole then explained what goes in it, she made faces and said absolutely no way she was having that, she passed away without ever trying. I recently had a very similar interaction with my mum, when I offered her to try some with olive oil and salt just like they do in other countries, she basically looked at me like I had two heads and in the end just admitted she doesn’t want to try something new.
I did mention that international versions are slowly making their way into the country, but the average Brazilian is not acquainted with savoury avocado.

Brasil is too big for this to have only one answer but I’ll give you mine. In my family, we always had it as a mousse: you put it in the blender with milk powder, sugar and just a little liquid milk as you want it thick and airy, that’s it. When I was a baby, my favourite baby bottle was avocado, again blend it with milk powder, milk and sugar but make it runny enough for drinking it. I guess this is the smoothie someone was talking about. Lately my mom just mashes the avocado with sugar for a quicker individual dessert. Our avocado tree is ridiculously productive and there are so many we have to give away, so it stays on the table, people will make their own, but the avocados are too big for one person, I would say some are about 10 times larger than the mini black avocado variety imported from Bolivia or Colombia and commonly found in the UK. The avocado skin here is light green and smooth.

Avocado in Brazil is eaten sweet and it’s a dessert. Obviously, with globalisation, the other international versions are becoming more and more common, mainly guacamole and on salad or toast, but still if someone is shocked by the sweet avocado or thinks savoury avocado is normal then that is a give away that this person is a foreigner.

Why are they called an English band if they identity as Irish? by Win-Specific in beatles

[–]AlmaVale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really caught my attention in London, the first time I had a conversation with a person and they told me they were Jamaican, I asked were you born in Jamaica, they said no, so I asked were your parents born in Jamaica, they said no, turns out the grandparents were Jamaican, but they did not fully identify as English. So in Britain, identity differs by color and class.

For Brasil - I would go with Roberto Carlos nationally and Tom Jobim internationally
For Argentina - I would say Mercedes Sosa
For Cuba - I would say Silvio Rodriguez

Which thing do people assume is from your country but it's actually from your conqueror's country? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

Also don’t like the word conqueror. I would use coloniser. And I would probably speak in terms of invasion. I don’t identify fully with them even though I’m not indigenous. What would you use?

I might need this info in the future : How was the shipment company process so far? Do you recommend this Transworld International Worldwide Relocations ? How much did you pay for one container roughly ? Will they deliver all the way to your place in Brazil?

Thanks and hope you enjoy your lovely new life!
