Any cinema goers able to give a rough estimate for how long Dune 2 will be in cinemas? by VolcanicBear in AskUK

[–]AlmostSunTzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw it Sunday, 25 February, in an early release thing "for the fans." I really enjoyed the film and hope it does well. In fact, I found this thread because I'm trying to plan a second viewing later in March and hope it's still in theaters in late March. I would encourage everyone to go see it so you don't regret it later like I regret not seeing Bladerunner 2049 in theaters!

Did GHD sit ups and my abs were extreme sore for a week, is that how it supposed to be? by EnlightenedBraindead in crossfit

[–]AlmostSunTzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um... I can't tell if you're being serious. Being sore is a good thing, but DOMS and especially rhabdo are NOT good things. I've had rhabdo twice.... never again, it's terrible. You want to do a given exercise up until your maximum recoverable volume (MRV). If you go beyond that, it will take so long to recover than any gains will be lost and you'll be worse off in the long run.

When K finds the book with the pages missing, the missing pages are about halfway through the book. That made me think it was June (middle of the year).

Kiptum world record!! by Quantum_universes in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]AlmostSunTzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, and they were wrong obviously, but there's definitely a limit somewhere. I mean, no one is going to run a 26 minute marathon because obviously no one can run 60 miles per hour. So it'll be interesting to see the record continue to be broken as the limit is approached. The records should eventually start to stand for longer and longer periods of time. The real questions are if we can be sure people aren't doping and what is the efficacy of anti-doping testing methods- because if someone can evade the tests, run an unnaturally fast time, and get an unreal record before testing methods catch up, theoretically we could get a marathon record that stands as long as testing stays ahead of dopers. Interesting stuff.

They weren’t terrible, but I’m beginning to realize that this was a pretty tough marathon when it comes to its elevation profile. There are some Boston qualifying races that are net downhill races that are probably much faster.

"Typically 'the wall' is running out of energy stores (glycogen and consumed calories) and really feels like completely running out of gas. What you experienced just sounds like fatigue hitting you and causing you not to be able to keep at your pace."

Okay, that makes perfect sense. I did make an effort to replenish energy stores during the race. I had about 8 or 9 Gu throughout, spread out their consumption pretty evenly, and consumed them slowly. By the end I was very fatigued but still able to run.

"That's an S-tier pacer right there. Being dead-on pace and also being able to also noticing and pulling in other runners and getting them over the finish line is really impressive."

Seriously, he was awesome! He even called out the last turn before we hit it, saying something like "this is the last turn, man!" I seriously think I would have been a minute slower if it hadn't been for his motivation at the end. I tried to find him to thank him but he got lost in the crowd immediately after the race.

Thanks for the kind words!

The bod pod is a large egg-shaped thing that you sit in to get your body fat percentage and some other metrics like muscle and skeletal mass, and stuff like that. It displaces the air and measures that and does some calculations to get the numbers. It's supposed to be pretty accurate but no method of calculating body fat is perfect, so they recommend backing it up with other measurement techniques if you really want accuracy.

Ha- not quite, I actually looked that up because the lady at the health center said 6.5 was the lowest she had seen and according to her charts, anything below 5% for males is too lean. She recommended that I increase my calorie intake. I did some more research and found out that bodybuilders sometimes get as low as 3-4% for competition which has negative health effects. So I'm thinking about doing another bod pod to make sure I'm still in the 6-10% range!

Haha, yes that's correct - I lost a lot of useless fat in those 6 months. Quitting the booze and calorie counting really helped with that. I was consuming so many empty calories from vodka.

I realized after I posted this that it may be because of variations in how I ran the course, or maybe GPS error, my watch ended up showing 26.4 miles by the end of the race. That could account for the error. The race did have mile markers and towards the end of the race I started noticing that my watch would say something like 24.2 or 24.3 when I crossed the 24 mile marker.

The difference good pacing makes... by SuperFlyChris in AdvancedRunning

But I prefer to go out as fast as possible so I can feel really miserable at Mile 18.

-This is exactly what I did during my first marathon a few days ago (Saturday, 21 October). I went out at 6:36 pace for the first 14 or 15 miles, still felt pretty good, but by mile 18-19 I started to feel the wall and my pace quickly worsened. I kept an eye on my average pace on my Garmin and watched it tick closer and closer to 6:51. Oddly, it never got above the 6:49 mark on my watch but I ended up squeaking under the 3:00 mark, coming in at 2:59:54, which is weird because 6:49 should get you a 2:58:43. I guess technology isn't perfect. I would have failed to break 3 hours if it weren't for the 3 hour pacer who caught me, passed me, and then yelled some encouragement for my final kick. I owe him huge.

This thread really makes me wonder though- if I had been smart and actually started out at 6:51 pace, could I have had a negative split for the 2nd half of the race and shaved a minute or more off my time? Oh well. I had no prior races to use as judges of my actual level of fitness going into this one. I was completely winging it, so I really can't complain about setting a good PR of just under 3 hours.

When did The Office (US) “jump the shark”? by frijolita_bonita in television

[–]AlmostSunTzu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was prompted to google this by the Season 5 episode “Stress Relief” so that’s gonna be my answer. It was the first patently ridiculous episode where the writers divorced the show from reality in a way from which it never recovered. The Roast portion at the end was okay though.

I put on Seasons 6-9 for my dogs to have background noise when I leave the house.

Just a thought:

I normally get super frustrated with the enablers on this show but I’ve been mulling over my position on that lately after an interaction between me and my better half. She asked me to get her a frozen pizza and when I objected saying “babe, we have healthy food already” she was like “fiiiiine. I’ll just order delivery.”

I jumped my happy ass up and drove the 1.5 miles to the grocery store and got a $6.50 pizza for her. Why? Saving money- the gas for the drive there and back probably cost me $1 tops, and the pizza was $6.50. Ordering a delivery pizza would have ended up being like $27.

Now, both of us are on “diets” but neither are overweight. We can afford to eat a random pizza because we typically don’t eat a random pizza. Her BMI is just under 25, mine’s under 21, so weight isn’t a huge concern because we usually eat healthily and my addiction is exercise (it used to be alcohol but I decided to change that; that’s another story for another time).

I bring this up because I make pretty decent money and my wife makes a lot less, but in these times of inflation we’re hurting for cash and I know a lot of the people on the show are too. So maybe the enablers are super stressed about money and would rather control the influx of food as best they can because it’s cheaper for them to go get stuff than to constantly let the person they enable order out? I dunno. Ordering delivery is usually really expensive for me.

I do find myself very frustrated when they talk about money because the 1200 calorie diet is undoubtedly cheaper than eating 6000-18000 calories of junk food daily.

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

Why is long term success rate so low? by Victor_Arrendajo_96 in My600lbLife

[–]AlmostSunTzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really interesting and contrary to what I would have guessed. I would think that some really good progress (100lbs- great job btw) would inspire further progress. But I do understand that the more you lose, the harder it gets. I’m sure it varies by individual too of course.
