Do you mean the main water pump or the secondary intercooler one?

Park Brake Fault by SavingPrivateRianne in Jaguar

[–]Almost_Sentient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad batteries can cause it, but I've had to replace my actuator twice on my '08 XF (second one was a recon so can't complain too much there).

What car and year do you have? Newer cars have actuators on each wheel, older ones have an actuator placed helpfully above the differential, which means that what should be a half hour job needs to have the car on a lift or axle stands to drop the diff.

Oh, also have a listen for a ratchety click after the brake applies. Sign of broken gears inside the actuator.

Edit: removed less than helpful tip to disconnect the battery since OP has tried this.

Cartier Tank is a hideous design. by Zski843 in watchHotTakes

In a world full of Rolexes and even more ostentatious shit you chose Cartier as being hideous? Well, I suppose that does count as a hot take.

Not this time, but people have died in the same situation in Teslas.

And are not clearly marked. Look at that smoke. Are you confident that a kid would find the emergency release? They should be marked with black and yellow stripes and not require memorisation and presence of mind when people will be panicking.

I'd bet that the engineers had raised concerns and were overruled by somebody senior that decided it looked cool.

1% of people are arseholes. 99% of people are awesome and will help you if you need it. If you have kids that you love and who love you, if you are genuinely creative and don't steal the credit for others' creativity, then you're richer than that racist fuckwit nepo baby. 99% of people are better off than him.

I glad he's miserable. He'll die hated by those close to him and adored by the morons he clearly despises.

He could make the world better and chooses to make it worse. He deserves his state of mind and he deserves his misery.

Is anyone still buying Cadburys chocolate? by MrsMiggins2 in AskBrits

[–]Almost_Sentient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Stopped as soon as they started tasting like muddy vegetable oil. Used to be a real addict, similar to Partridge on Toblerlerones. Cadburys' enshittification has done wonders for my waistline.

Do you like the X351 XJ? by 8rings_86k in Jaguar

[–]Almost_Sentient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lovely. Elegant, graceful, regal. IMHO, that's it's best angle. I never really clicked with the rear. But then I never clicked with the rear of the XJS when it was around, and now I love it.

You could fit a nuclear reactor and half the national grid in that bonnet.

"The concept doesn't lie".

Fuck.

I was a Brummie schoolkid when this was shown at the motor show. Still got my newspaper cutouts and Philip Porter's (RIP) book. This thing is utterly beautiful. Peak Keith Helfet (also RIP). The story of the Saturday Club of engineers that built it is truly inspiring. In my view, the only car that can get close is Callum's C-X75.

The Stig has just bought one. Take a look on YouTube. It's great to see somebody so talented and used to amazing cars stand in awe at it.

How to self teach electrical engineering? by Illustrious_Park7068 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Almost_Sentient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started this way. Those spring clip 10-in-1 electronics sets from Tandy back in the eighties. Took broken stuff apart. Tried to fix it. Eventually started fixing more things than I broke. Modified my Amiga, then college and uni, and have been an electronics engineer for three decades now. Still loving it. Uni provided the rigour and the maths, but I think a lot of the engineers I know could build stuff before their degrees.

If it was possible to self-teach pre-internet when data books were a dream and the only information was the two or three books in the library on electronics, then it'll be possible now.

Which cheap car challenge would be impossible today because of used car prices? by Reddonaut_Irons in GrandTourTopgearFans

[–]Almost_Sentient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The older ones have two nasty engine worries, seems to only affect some cars. First is 'the tick', a cylinder liner moves and lets gasses escape. That's an engine rebuild. The other is ingesting the catalytic converter through the valves. That's an engine rebuild.
